Ken Rosewall defeated the defending champion Arthur Ashe in the final, 6–1, 7–5, 6–3 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1971 Australian Open. With the win, he became the first man in the Open Era to win a major singles title without dropping a set.

It was the third leg of an eventual second Grand Slam for Laver, which remains the only Grand Slam achieved in men's singles tennis in the Open Era.

It was Rosewall's second French title, and his fifth Grand Slam tournament title overall. The tournament was the first major of the Open Era, in which professionals were allowed to compete against amateurs. Rosewall and Laver, who had not appeared in a Grand Slam major since 1956 and 1962 respectively, were among those no longer barred from entering.
