We’re proud to announce, that on their 50th anniversary, our Marine Environmental Unit (MEU) will be presenting at MASTS Scotland's Annual Science Meeting. Dr Jenni Kakkonen, Team Manager of the MEU, will be joined by Professor John Baxter, Chair of the Orkney Independent Marine Advisory Group, to discuss the MEU’s origins as a biological monitoring programme created to identify if there were any impacts from the then-new Flotta Oil Terminal. As of 2024, the scope of the MEU’s work has expanded greatly, and they are now involved in a range of monitoring studies that highlight the importance of such long-term programmes. In addition to their talk, “Fifty years and counting - Marine monitoring in Orkney”, the team will have a stand at the event where attendees can learn more about the MEU’s work from Dr Kakkonen, Katy Beaton and Prof. Baxter. Following the new Labour government's Autumn Budget, we were pleased to hear the chancellor acknowledge that more investment is needed in our ports and harbours. We were disappointed, however, that no specific funding has been allocated to secure this vital sector. More still needs to be done for ports and harbours across the UK to flourish. We look forward to working with the new Labour Government and our stakeholders, to realise their ambitions of delivering clean energy by 2030.

On Saturday we waved goodbye to the last of our 2024 callers, Oceania Cruises' Sirena. It has been an exceptional year with 222 calls and 213,176 passengers across 12 different locations. Many customs have been shared and friendships have been made. We hope each of our guests has taken a peedie bit of Orkney away with them. #Cruise #CruiseIndustry #CruiseScotland #CruiseBritain

Last week’s Floating Offshore Wind conference in Aberdeen reminded us of both the incredible opportunity at our doorstep and the continuing uncertainty over infrastructure investment. We share our thoughts in our most recent blog 👉 https://lnkd.in/efDirdsv

80 years of airfield experience! 🛬 Congratulations to brothers Bobby and David Rendall, each celebrating 40 years of service at Papa Westray Airfield. As Airfield Coordinator and Airfield Attendant, respectively, Bobby and David have played a vital role in keeping the airport, home to the world's shortest passenger flight, operational since 1984. For their anniversary, they each received a plaque from colleagues at Orkney Islands Council and free flight tickets from Loganair Limited. #Orkney #OrkneyIslandsCouncil #OrkneyAirfields #WorkAnniversary

We’re delighted to attend and exhibit at this year’s Floating Offshore Wind Conference in Aberdeen, where the future of renewable energy takes centre-stage once again. Ports and harbours will be the backbone of offshore wind development in Scotland and it’s important for us to highlight the critical role programmes like Orkney Future Ports will play in delivering ambitious renewable energy targets to achieve net zero. With that, we are heartened to hear First Minister, John Swinney reaffirm policy certainty and his commitment to invest £500 million worth of funding into developing the infrastructure needed to deliver offshore wind. Additionally, we welcome his invitation to collaborate more closely with government to unlock private investment and realise our aspirations. However, whilst the First Minister’s comments are welcomed, much more tangible support and investment must be fast-tracked towards ports and harbours if we are to succeed. Without this, Scotland's renewable ambitions risk falling short, if not failing altogether. Let’s work together to ensure that the foundation for our renewable future is as strong as the wind that powers it. #NetZero #RenewableEnergy #OffshoreWind #Ports #Sustainability #ScotlandGreenEnergy #OrkneyFuturePorts #FloatingWind24

Celebrating its 50th anniversary, our Marine Environmental Unit will feature in ITN Business’ new programme. Due to premiere tomorrow, 8th October, at London International Shipping Week, the film has interviews with current MEU team members Dr Jenni Kakkonen and Robbie Cant. The film will also feature an interview with Prof John Baxter, who was with the MEU 50 years ago when monitoring first began. A crucial component of Orkney Harbour’s commitment to environmental stewardship, the Marine Environmental Unit showcased some of their fieldwork and lab work too.
