TechCrunch Minute: Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 is its best model yet — at least on paper

From the collection TechCrunch Minute

OpenAI rival Anthropic released its newest generative AI model this week, Claude 3.5 Sonnet. While Sonnet is an improvement over Anthropic’s last release, it’s not quite groundbreaking. Could the AI industry be cooling its jets at last?

Similar to models like ChatGPT, Sonnet generates text and analyzes text and images. Its strides in interpreting charts and graphs are notable, but overall, this jump from model to model isn’t as drastic as it’s been in the past.

As for what else is new with Sonnet, Anthropic is working on Artifacts, which is a workspace where users can edit and add to content that they’ve generated with Claude. As Anthropic works on its enterprise offerings, a tool like Artifacts could figure prominently in its plans.

The release of Sonnet brings up a few questions — if Sonnet’s progress is incremental, why are its benchmarks so good? And are we finally seeing generative AI enter its iterative era?

On today’s TechCrunch Minute, we’re counting the syllables and looking for rhymes in Sonnet.
