Use Compact mode in Google Chat

To find more information at a glance in Chat, you can use Compact mode.

Comfortable (Default)	Compact

Sender and recipient message bubbles are on opposite sides. Narrower message bubbles. More space in the left bar, conversation list, and Home.	Sender and recipient message bubbles are on the same side. Wider message bubbles. Padding in the left bar, conversation list, and Home.

Adjust density settings on web & standalone app

When you adjust density settings for chat.google.com:

To change the density settings:

When you change the density settings in Gmail:

Changes apply to both Gmail and Chat in Gmail.
Changes don’t apply to Chat when you access it through:
- chat.google.com
- The Chat standalone app

To change the density settings:

On your computer, open Gmail.
At the top right, click Settings .
In the settings side panel, under “Density,” select Default, Comfortable, or Compact.

Tip: Both “Default” and “Comfortable” options for Chat in Gmail have the same layout for Chat density.
