Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Tuesday that Randal Grichuk may begin the season on the injured list with an ankle issue, per Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com, potentially opening up a roster spot for McCarthy.
McCarthy had a .644 OPS last season and seemed like a longshot to crack Arizona's Opening Day roster with the club re-signing Lourdes Gurriel and bringing in Grichuk and Joc Pederson; however, Grichuk's injury opens a path to a roster spot. Even if he does make the roster, McCarthy is unlikely to see significant playing time if the rest of the outfield group remains healthy.
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick said Tuesday that the signing of Montgomery in March was a "horrible decision."
The left-hander was removed from the rotation for a bit down the stretch and finished the campaign with a 6.23 ERA and 1.65 WHIP over 117 innings, but it's surprising to hear such frank comments from the team owner. Montgomery joined Arizona on a one-year, $25 million contract and has a $22.5 million player option for 2025, which he is unlikely to decline while coming off the worst full season of his MLB career.
Ryne Nelson recorded his first save, allowing no runs on one hit in 3.0 innings, as the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the San Diego Padres 11-2 on Sunday. Nelson struck out one, ending the game with a 4.24 ERA and 1.25 WHIP on the season.

Justin Martinez fell to 5-6, allowing one run on three hits in 0.1 innings, as the Arizona Diamondbacks lost to the Milwaukee Brewers 10-9 on Sunday. Martinez struck out one, ending the game with a 2.44 ERA and 1.30 WHIP on the season.
Yilber Diaz allowed one run - zero earned - on two hits and one walk in 1.2 innings as the Arizona Diamondbacks lost to the Milwaukee Brewers 10-9 on Sunday. Diaz struck out two, ending the game with a 3.86 ERA and 1.32 WHIP on the season.
Joe Mantiply allowed three runs on two hits and one walk in 0.2 innings as the Arizona Diamondbacks lost to the Milwaukee Brewers 10-9 on Sunday. Mantiply did not strike out a batter, ending the game with a 4.03 ERA and 1.21 WHIP on the season.
Corbin Carroll went 0 for 1 Sunday as the Arizona Diamondbacks lost to the Milwaukee Brewers 10-9. He's now batting .230 with 21 home runs this season.
Ryan Thompson allowed two runs on three hits in 1.0 inning as the Arizona Diamondbacks lost to the Milwaukee Brewers 10-9 on Sunday. Thompson did not strike out a batter, ending the game with a 3.36 ERA and 1.23 WHIP on the season.
Ketel Marte went 1 for 4 with a home run and an RBI Sunday as the Arizona Diamondbacks lost to the Milwaukee Brewers 10-9. Marte scored twice. He's now batting .295 with 35 home runs this season.
Randal Grichuk went 1 for 1 with an RBI Sunday as the Arizona Diamondbacks lost to the Milwaukee Brewers 10-9. He's now batting .287 with 11 home runs this season.
Carroll appeared headed in the right direction after he posted an .822 OPS in July, and he was even more productive in August as he posted a .280/.342/.700 slash line with 11 homers, two steals, 24 RBI and 30 runs in 27 games. The 24-year-old's .749 OPS for the season is still underwhelming following an ugly first half, but he's finally looking like the player that unanimously won NL Rookie of the Year in 2023.
Montgomery isn't expected to opt out of his contract for 2025, per Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.com.
The left-hander is currently poised to make $22.5 million next season, though that will increase to $25 million if he reaches 23 starts. Montgomery has made 19 starts this season but was recently shifted to the bullpen due to his 6.19 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 69:37 K:BB across 99.1 innings. The 31-year-old will likely want a chance to rebound in 2025 before returning to the open market.
Suarez has a .301/.333/.609 slash line with 11 doubles, 10 homers, 31 RBI and 26 runs in 34 games since the All-Star break.
The veteran third baseman labored during most of the first half and headed into the All-Star break with a .668 OPS and 10 homers through 93 games, but his bat has come alive as the summer has progressed. Suarez saw his playing time dip a bit in June due to the struggles, but he's since found his groove and has reclaimed the everyday job at third base as the Diamondbacks look to lock down a playoff spot.
Philadelphia could look to acquire Grichuk ahead of the July 30 trade deadline if the club elects to pursue a rental option, per Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The 32-year-old signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Diamondbacks in February that includes a $6 million mutual option for 2025, so he's a candidate to be traded even if Arizona doesn't consider itself a seller. Grichuk has seen most of his playing time this season against left-handed pitching, though his splits have been fairly even with a .766 OPS versus righties and a .774 OPS against lefties. His role likely wouldn't change much if sent to Philadelphia, as he fits in best there as the right-handed hitting complement to Brandon Marsh in a left-field platoon.
Diamondbacks GM Mike Hazen said Wednesday that he'll be "looking for opportunities" to call up De Los Santos if his "defense comes along," reports Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com.
The 21-year-old was selected by Cleveland in the Rule 5 Draft during the offseason but was returned to Arizona at the end of spring training. De Los Santos began the campaign with Double-A Amarillo and posted a 1.122 OPS in 38 contests before being promoted to Triple-A Reno. He has continued to hit well for Reno with 12 homers and a .296/.339/.611 slash line in 41 games, but his poor defense remains a point of concern. The Diamondbacks don't have a clear opening at designated hitter with Joc Pederson still hitting well against right-handed pitching, and De Los Santos may have trouble forcing his way onto the big-league roster as a bench piece that's a defensive liability.
Mena could be called up to make his MLB debut Wednesday against the Dodgers after previously scheduled starter Jordan Montgomery was placed on the injured list with knee inflammation, reports Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com.
Mena's last outing for Triple-A Reno came on June 26, so he could easily be inserted into Arizona's rotation. The 21-year-old was acquired from the White Sox in February and has struggled for Reno this season with a 4.90 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 89:38 K:BB in 16 starts, so he would be a risky streaming option for fantasy managers should he get the call from the Diamondbacks.
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Tuesday that Newman could receive some playing time at third base in the near future, reports Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic.
Eugenio Suarez continues to work as Arizona's primary third baseman, with Blaze Alexander mixing in, but the former is hitting .141 in June while the latter is mired in a 3-for-24 slump. Newman has had a reduced role over the past couple weeks due to Geraldo Perdomo being back from the injured list. Newman's .712 OPS through 55 games would be his best since 2019, but he's unlikely to provide a significant offensive boost for the Diamondbacks.
Regarding a potential trade of McCarthy this summer, Diamondbacks GM Mike Hazen said Wednesday, "he's one of our best players. Like, why would I do that," reports Kevin Zimmerman of ArizonaSports.com.
The 26-year-old seemed unlikely to make Arizona's season-opening roster given the offseason acquisitions of Randal Grichuk and Joc Pederson, but Grichuk started the campaign on the IL and Alek Thomas went down with a hamstring injury Opening Day. McCarthy has taken advantage of his opportunities through 59 games in 2024 with three homers, nine steals and a .276/.361/.393 slash line.
According to Kevin Zimmerman of ArizonaSports.com, Diamondbacks GM Mike Hazen refuted a report Wednesday that the club is willing to listen to trade offers for Suarez.
The veteran third baseman was acquired from Seattle during the offseason, but his first campaign in Arizona has been a disaster with a .575 OPS through 66 games. Suarez's $15 million club option for 2025 isn't looking likely to be picked up, while Hazen also indicated that Blaze Alexander will begin to see more playing time at third base. Hazen may simply be electing to not show his hand ahead of the trade deadline, but for now it appears Suarez isn't going anywhere.
The Diamondbacks are willing to listen to trade offers that involve Suarez, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.
Suarez was acquired during the offseason in a trade that sent Seby Zavala and Carlos Vargas to the Mariners, and the club hasn't exactly been pleased with his production so far. Nightengale notes that Suarez is currently in danger of losing a hold on his everyday role at the hot corner, and the D-Backs have little interest in exercising the veteran's $15 million option. It's unclear as to what kind of return Arizona could get in a trade involving Suarez, considering he's slashing .200/.265/.317 with five homers, 30 RBI, two stolen bases and 24 runs in 65 games this season.
Zac Gallen suffered a hamstring strain Thursday against the Mets, per Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com, so Cecconi may have a chance to rejoin the Diamondbacks' rotation next week.
Cecconi was demoted to Triple-A Reno last week after a five-start run with Arizona, which ended with him giving up six runs in three of his final four outings. The 24-year-old had a 2.08 ERA and 0.69 WHIP in his other three appearances, so he's been a true boom-or-bust performer early in 2024. Gallen remains without a return timeline for now but is a strong bet to land on the injured list.
Suarez has a .187/.244/.267 slash line with just four extra-base hits and a 31.7 percent strikeout rate through 22 games in May.
The veteran third baseman's first month with the Diamondbacks wasn't particularly productive as he finished April with a .667 OPS, but this month has been even worse. Suarez has always been prone to strikeouts, but his 28.8 percent mark this year would actually be his best since 2019. The issue this season is a lack of hard contact, with his 33.1 percent hard-hit rate representing nearly a 10-point drop from 2023. Suarez retains an everyday role at third base but could see his playing time start to slip if his slump lingers into the heart of summer.
Carroll has a .296/.321/.444 slash line and at least one hit in six of his past seven games.
The reigning NL Rookie of the Year has struggled early in 2024 with a .578 OPS through 34 games, and his average exit velocity has dropped five mph to 85 mph, which ranks 169th of 173 qualified batters. Carroll has still provided some fantasy value with eight steals and has encouraging strikeout and walk rates at 18 and 10.7 percent, respectively, but he's shown minimal pop with only five extra-base hits.
According to Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.com, Montgomery hired Joel Wolfe and Nick Chanock as his agents Thursday.
The 31-year-old lefty apparently wasn't happy with how things played out in free agency, so he decided to move on from Scott Boras after agreeing to a one-year, $25 million contract with the Diamondbacks in late March. The deal includes a vesting option for 2025 worth up to $25 million depending on how many starts he makes, but it's still a far cry from McDaniel's offseason projection of five years and $106 million for Montgomery.
The Diamondbacks are soon expected to select Newman's contract from Triple-A Reno, reports Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic.
Geraldo Perdomo will be sidelined for at least the next month with a torn meniscus in his right knee, opening the door for Newman to join the Diamondbacks. Newman opted out of his minor-league deal with Arizona after missing the Opening Day roster in late March, but he quickly re-signed and has gone 8-for-22 through six games with Reno. The 30-year-old shortstop may not have a regular role in the big leagues as Blaze Alexander appears set to step in as the primary shortstop.
Grichuk could be activated off the injured list in time for Arizona's weekend series against Atlanta, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com reports.
Grichuk began the season on the injured list due to an ankle injury and has made four appearances in rehab games. Jorge Barrosa had an impressive short-term run in the majors but was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Wednesday, another indication that Grichuk is nearing a return.
According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Montgomery wasn't interested in signing with the Red Sox after the two sides had a virtual meeting in February.
Despite speculation that Montgomery would likely be interested in signing with Boston, the left-hander wanted to win and didn't believe the Red Sox would be a playoff contender in 2024. The 31-year-old should certainly get that opportunity in Arizona, which won the NL Pennant last year. Montgomery is making a start at Triple-A Reno this weekend as he builds up his workload before making his Diamondbacks debut.
According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Montgomery and the Yankees never got close to agreeing on a contract before he signed with the Diamondbacks on Tuesday.
There was apparently plenty of interest on both sides, but New York never officially made an offer despite at one point considering a four-year structure loaded with deferrals. Montgomery instead linked up with Arizona on a one-year, $25 million pact that includes a vesting option for 2025, which will be worth $20-to-$25 million depending on how many starts he makes.
