Martti Oiva Kalevi Ahtisaari (pronounced [ˈmɑrt:i ˈoivɑ ˈkɑleʋi ˈɑhtisɑ:ri]) (23 June 1937 – 16 October 2023) was a Finnish politician. He was the 10th President of Finland between 1994 until 2000. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2008. He is also a United Nations diplomat and mediator. He was known for his international peace work.

Nobel Prize

Ahtisaari was a UN Special Envoy at the Kosovo status process negotiations. These negotiations were aimed at resolving a long-running dispute in Kosovo. Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia in 2008. In October 2008, Ahtisaari was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize "for his efforts on several continents and over more than three decades, to resolve international conflicts". The Nobel statement said that Ahtisaari has played a prominent role in resolving many conflicts in Namibia, Indonesia, Kosovo and Iraq, among other areas.

Death

In September 2021, Ahtisaari was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

Ahtisaari died on 16 October 2023 in Helsinki, Finland at the age of 86.
