Hi @Nebulousflynn, nice to have you :). Afaik it is about the implementation of a 3D viewer for textured models and what "quality of life" features it should include, also while handling larger files.

Huge thanks from me, too :). Happy to see the project growing
Oct 30 2024
Very important step :)
Let's make it happen
Oct 29 2024
I uploaded a duck test files, works also fine. Maybe the zooming could be a bit smoother :)
I just took a look at it, and this is already very good! Thank you very much for this :) (Color and shading make a huge difference)

I found some sort of GLTF Viewer from the Poly Haven source code repository: https://github.com/Poly-Haven/polyhaven.com/tree/master/components/AssetPage/WebGL

https://www.blender.org/download/demo-files/ also offers free *.blend files, where colored meshes can be exported

Seems like a Christmas wonder!
I did a test again, and it seems to work now. I uploaded a TIF file via the big chunked uploader. The file: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Freistaat_Sachsen_dop20rgb_33332_5710_2_sn_(Landesamt_f%C3%BCr_Geobasisinformation_Sachsen).tif

@MatthewVernon thank you for creating this new task :). I hope the issue can be solved soon
Dec 20 2023
Yes. I have for example some orthophotos of Saxony I'd like to upload and a self-made HDR spherical panorama :(
The same case as Alexkrakovsky described also applies for the upload/publishing of TIF files.
Dec 18 2023
Can be tracked what happened at the time when the affected were not able to be uploaded any more? Has something changed that rendered the file uploads of specific PDFs und TIFs impossible?
Dec 15 2023
I tested it with a TIFF in combination with chunked uploader. It's interesting to see that the error appears instantly after beginning to rebuild the file
Dec 14 2023
Alright, thanks! :)

Just for clarification so that I understand: Afaik, the main reason for deletion the Age of Empires-related contents was the doubt regarding the Creative Commons license that was added to the respective video on YouTube by the Age of Empires YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/@ageofempires). The rationale was COM:PCP. Did the opinion change on this topic?
Dec 8 2023
The issue might be limited to only TIF(F) files. An upload and publishing of a PNG file with similar file size worked
This is the output after uploading

Did WMF answer already?
Nov 10 2023
Please do!
Nov 8 2023
I am afraid, I can't, but I will keep my eyes open :)
Nov 7 2023
Maybe we can acquire one or more voluntary people?
Nov 6 2023
What is the current state/progress? :)
Oct 9 2023
Is the gITF format as such suitable to be implemented in Wikimedia Commons with its attributes as mentioned above? :)
Oct 5 2023
gITF sounds fair to me. It is so common that this filetype is offered on different websites and is supported in several 3D software titles.
Oct 4 2023
Did we already examine what file type(s) are most suitable for textured meshes?
Sep 19 2023
I did some research, the following are more common:
- LAS/LAZ (Lidar Data Exchange Format), commonly used as format for laser scanning (lidar) as in geographic information technology, can be opened by open software like CloudCompare and is an open format (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LAS_file_format), can be used for archival purposes, "industry standard of lidar data". LAZ is a file type for compressed LAS files. Allows to store GPS time, RGB and NIR (infrared), is a GIS file format
- PLY (Polygon file format) text-based format, which can also be used for typical 3D meshes, supported by CloudCompare, MeshLab and more
- XYZ (named after Cartesian coordinates), saves points as simple coordinates (X|Y|Z) as text in one file
- PTS, stores points similar to XYZ and adds a color to every point as "intensity value" (https://paulbourke.net/dataformats/pts/)
- e57, similar to LAZ, but claims to be able to store more records than LAZ (http://www.libe57.org/)
- DXF file format by Autodesk, is proprietary, so irrelevant for us
- OBJ or Wavefront OBJ, open file format for 3D objects, usually needs an extra .mtl file
Sep 16 2023
Point clouds are also very important. The Bayerische Vermessungsverwaltung for example offers them. It is also useful for laser scans of 3D objects :)

Yes, it looks like the upload server (or some other instance) can't properly process files above a file size of 500-600 MB. It doesn't matter if it's an image or a video. For me, there was always an error with larger file sizes in the last months, so the error should be easily reproducible with a simple larger file. Factors like dimensions or pixel count don't matter here, image sizes up to 65535x65535 (4.3 gigapixels: largest dimensions PNG supports), work.

Thank you for you answers, I will upload a TAR.GZ archive and send the link within a few days :).

The file is quite large, 2,36 GiB at 26754 x 26754 pixels :). This size allows deep views of details in the image
