The NYPD said Fernandez’s store was the second Bronx food market robbed in just 24 hours. On Monday, $100,000 was stolen from Los Castillos mini market in Morris Heights.

Fernando Mateo of the United Bodegas of America said these robberies are getting out of hand.

“We’re going back to the 1960s, 70s and 80s when bodega owners like my father used to sleep in the store with his gun. When people were going to break in, it was two shots, and they’d run. That’s how we used to defend our property. Now, we’re going to have to go back to that. You know that’s not right, it’s not,” Mateo said.

Aside from the stolen cash, Fernandez said she’s dealing with thousands of dollars’ worth of damages. She said she wants justice for owners like herself dealing with theft.

“To get up in the morning and hear someone is robbing the store when you work really hard,” Fernandez said. “We’re the number one business to support a community.”

There are no arrests so far in either case. The United Bodegas of America said they’re offering a $15,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest.
