TREASURES ALL AROUND
Living by the sea, I have always been fascinated by lighthouses, lifesaving stations, and shipwrecks. In fact, Massachusetts has around 3,500 shipwrecks within its waters. And one recently resurfaced on Crane Beach in Ipswich. At low tide you can see what is left of the Ada K. Damon, a schooner that was shipwrecked 115 years ago during a Christmas nor’easter. The remnants of the hull are a haunting sight on the shifting sands. Today, the Trustees of Reservations offers Shipwreck Scholars tours to learn the history of the ship, explore the ecosystem surrounding the hull, and discuss the effects of climate change.
