We’ve had an inspiring few days in Brussels, connecting over new ideas in collaboration and innovation to support EU’s 2030 climate and energy goals, while also showcasing the progress of our completed facility in Øygarden. With our facilities now ready to receive CO₂ from industrial emitters, Northern Lights is well-positioned to establish commercial agreements across Europe. During the event, EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson and CINEA Director Paloma Aba Garrote hosted a ceremony to mark the signature of five grant agreements under the Connecting Europe Facility for Energy. As approved in June 2024, Northern Lights gratefully received €131 million, emphasising our cruical role in supporting Europe’s climate targets, and enabling the next phase of our project expansion. #PCIdaysEU #CEFEnergy #NorthernLightsCCS CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency | EU Environment and Climate

Our aim is to enable the decarbonisation of industrial emissions and to facilitate the removal of CO2 from the air.
Om oss
We are developing the world’s first open-source CO2 transport and storage infrastructure. Our aim is to enable the decarbonisation of industrial emissions and to facilitate the removal of CO2 from the air. We are part of a growing movement to actively manage the carbon cycle and get it back in balance. As we develop our business, we will share, listen and encourage innovation and technology development. Northern Lights is a first – and we want to make it easy for others to follow.

During this year’s Northern Lights Summit, one of our guest speakers, Claire Curry from BloombergNEF, highlighted the progress we have made so far in the CCS industry. However, the message was clear: more action is required to meet EU’s Net Zero targets, including CCS. While advancements in solar, wind energy, and electric vehicles are driving reductions in CO2 emissions, these alone will not suffice. To reach net-zero by 2050, we need to accelerate the deployment of hydrogen, bioenergy, and, crucially, CCS. As Curry highlighted: "If we are to reach net-zero, we believe it is unlikely to limit global warming to below 1.75°C of warming. However, without the implementation of CCS, we can risk getting closer to 1.9°C of warming by 2050, highlighting the significant role CCS must play in our climate strategy". Thank you, Claire, for your insights and to all our speakers for contributing to this fruitful discussion. Together we can turn ambition into action. Missed the Summit? Northern Lights is the first to offer commercial CO2 transport and storage as a service. Our CO2 receiving facilities in Øygarden is completed and ready to receive CO2 from Norwegian and European industry. Thank you to H.R.H The Crown Prince of Norway and the President of Finland for asking Northern Lights to present our project as part of the official state visit to Norway. Our Director of Communications & Political and Public Affairs, Benedicte Staalesen, spoke about how the potential for CCS in Norway is huge. Estimates show that the Norwegian Continental Shelf has a theoretical storage capacity of 80 billion tons of CO2, which corresponds to 25 years of all EU emissions. “Northern Lights provides a solution for Norwegian and European industry to decarbonise”. Northern Lights JV receives the Franco-Norwegian trophy! We were recently invited to the Annual Gala Dinner of Fransk-Norsk Handelskammer. Northern Lights wants to extend our gratitude for recognising the significance of our recent opening ceremony and for our crucial role in the EU’s 2030 decarbonisation objectives. Thank you for the continued support and for voting for us! #NorthernLightsCCS #Decarbonisation
During the Gala Dinner 2024 of the French-Norwegian Chamber of Commerce (CCFN), held at Gamle Logen AS in Oslo on October 10th, the Fransk-Norsk Trophée 2024 was awarded to Northern Lights JV ! This prestigious award is presented annually by the CCFN in cooperation with BNP Paribas. A jury composed of CCFN members and partners, as well as representatives from the French and Norwegian Embassies, carefully reviewed the nominations. This year, the jury recognized Northern Lights JV, a Joint Venture specializing in Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), as a shining example of cooperation between major groups like Equinor for Norway and TotalEnergies for France, alongside public authorities and innovative suppliers worldwide, all working towards environmental sustainability. Norway has been a pioneer in this field, and the CCFN has actively collaborated with Team Norway, Team France Export Club CO2 and the Norwegian CO2 Association for the past eight years to promote CCS and strengthen bilateral cooperation. The trophy was presented by Claudine Smith CEO of BNP Paribas Norway and Ludovic Caubet of the French-Norwegian Chamber of Commerce (CCFN), in the presence of the French ambassador to Norway, H.E. Florence Robine, and the Norwegian ambassador to France, H.E. Niels Engelschiøn. Congratulations to Tim Heijn CEO of Northern Lights, Fridtjof Wisur Commercial Director and all your teams who have worked so hard to bring Phase I of the project to a successful conclusion. Carbon capture and storage explained: Apprentice Gianluca Savalli in the Norwegian Ministry of Energy visited us recently to understand what exactly CCS is. He asked one of the most common questions Northern Lights receive: "Can CO2 explode?" "The CO2 is not a gas. It will be in liquid form and it is not flammable. Therefore, there is no danger of explosion", explains our Communications Director Benedicte Staalesen. Check out the video below (in Norwegian).

Successful first part of sea trials for the first Northern Lights ship! While celebrating the completion of our Øygarden facilities we have also made great strides in CO2 shipping. Check out the video below to see the Northern Pioneer which will soon be crossing European waters. Northern Lights has four sister ships under construction and the first two are on track to be delivered in 2024. #CO2Shipping
