‘The price of no change is unacceptable’ – UN and civil society global campaigns aim to end violence against women

A global effort to end violence against women is now underway: 16 days of activism began on 25 November with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against and will continue through 10 December, Human Rights Day galvanizing the work of UN Women’s ‘Orange the World’ campaign and the United Nations Secretary-General’s UNiTE to End Violence Against Women initiative.

‘Without stories, there is silence’ – women speak up at the UN about violence and disability

Like for many of the 21 other women in the project – which is expanding as more choose to break their silence – Silent Tears has been an integral part of Betty’s healing. The exhibition was recently featured during the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), an intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women.

On 31 October 2000, the United Nations Security Council adopted the historic resolution 1325, drawing attention to the differential impact of armed conflict on women, their exclusion from conflict prevention and resolution, peacekeeping and peacebuilding, and the inextricable links between gender equality and international peace and security.

Gender equality – Still a long way to go

Twenty years since the world signed on to the 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform of Action – a blueprint for gender equality – women of the world are still subject to sexual violence and lag behind men in an array of critical aspects of life, like health, education, wages, property ownership and political participation. Yet some gains have made, albeit slow and uneven, the UN says.
