TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) met with former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo (龐培歐) on Tuesday (May 21), where the former U.S. Secretary of State praised the newly-inaugurated President's speech, highlighting Taiwan's significant role globally and reiterating the importance of peace and prosperity.
With the discussion focused on the deepening Taiwan-U.S. cooperation, the meeting underscored both parties' commitment to regional peace, stability, and global prosperity.
During the meeting, Lai expressed his anticipation for Pompeo's continued support for the new government, aiming to maintain regional peace and stability and promote global prosperity.
The Taiwanese President also thanked Pompeo for his long-standing support for Taiwan's democracy and contributions to enhancing Taiwan-U.S. relations, including initiating the U.S.-Taiwan Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue.
This year marks the 45th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act (台灣關係法), Lai remarked, adding his sentiments on looking forward to expanding the substantive basis of the Taiwan-U.S. partnership.
The meeting also touched on the recent signing of the 2024 National Defense Authorization Act by U.S. President Joe Biden, which strengthens the Taiwan-U.S. security partnership, including support for Taiwan.
Pompeo congratulated the people of Taiwan on their successful elections and expressed anticipation for Taiwan's future performance, stating that the U.S. will support Taiwan in a bipartisan manner.
The discussions between Lai and Pompeo set a positive tone for the future of Taiwan-U.S. relations, emphasizing mutual support for democracy, security, and economic prosperity.
