Maasdorp to hear fate of bail application on 7 February: Staff Reporter WENTZEL Maasdorp, the 40-year-old man accused of murdering his domestic partner, Delia Weimers-Maasdorp (40), in April 2024, is set to hear the fate of his bail application on 7 February 2025. Maasdorp is facing one count of murder, as well as charges of theft and housebreaking, after allegedly murdering Weimers-Maasdorp in her Klein Windhoek flat on 25 April 2024 and thereafter stealing her mobile phone, television, and car. State Prosecutor Eric Naikaku objected to bail due to the seriousness of the offence, the strength of the State’s case, the fear of reoffending, and the argument that granting the accused bail would not be in the interest of the public or the administration of justice. Defence lawyer Samuel Shinedima, however, argued that his client is a suitable candidate for bail, adding that the Namibian Constitution guarantees the right to a fair trial and the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. He further stated that the denial of bail should not be used as anticipatory punishment against the accused. Shinedima also argued that the seriousness of the offence should not be the sole determining factor when considering bail. Regarding the State’s assertion that it has a strong case against his client, he said that bail applications should not be based on the merits of the case but rather on factors such as whether the accused would abscond or interfere with investigations. He added that much of the evidence presented in court against the accused delved into the merits of the matter rather than bail considerations. He further stated that Maasdorp’s four children would be negatively affected if the court denied him bail. Additionally, he argued that if granted bail, Maasdorp would be offered employment by his father, a businessman, and would reside at his father’s residence. He added that his client was willing to comply with a wide array of bail conditions, including reporting twice to the nearest police station, limited travel, and a commitment not to contact State witnesses or investigators in the matter. State Prosecutor Naikaku, however, countered that the accused was out on bail for a housebreaking charge when he committed the current offence. He further asserted that the strength of the State’s case was undisputed and that the accused’s choice to remain silent when presented with key points on the merits of the case could prove detrimental to his bid for bail. Naikaku argued that Maasdorp is a crack cocaine abuser who did not dispute that, after killing the victim, he removed certain items from her flat and sold them in exchange for money and drugs. He also stated that no evidence was presented to prove that the accused cared for his children, which could have been demonstrated through bank statements. He added that the country is… https://lnkd.in/d9dCyVG8

Namdia diamond heist: Former chief executive pays tribute to robbery victim: Former Namib Desert Diamonds (Namdia) chief executive Kennedy Hamutenya has taken to social media to pay tribute to one of the victims of the diamond heist that took place in Windhoek on Saturday. The robbery claimed the lives of two – Namdia employee Francois Eiseb and an unnamed suspected robber. Hamutenya, who also served as a diamond commissioner before his Namdia job, said Eiseb was a dedicated employee during his tenure. “It’s very hard to comprehend this senseless cold-blooded murder of a husband and a father. A man who was at work busy so he can educate his children, put food on the table and provide shelter and security for his family. Yesterday his life was unceremoniously taken away from him,” he posted. “When I was at the helm at Namdia, Francois was second only to Clarky McKay, and was chief of security at his passing. He was one of the most hard-working and committed employees who would perform above and beyond the call of duty. “He’d even volunteer to drive clients to and from the airport to ensure their safety. He was kind and cordial to all other colleagues and was full of respect,“ Hamutenya said. The former executive said he had kept in contact with Eiseb after his tenure. “I spoke to him to wish him a merry Christmas, and he called to wish me and my family happy new year on the first. He was a kind man. He was a gentleman. “Rest in perfect peace, my brother Francois Eiseb. May the Lord have mercy on your soul,” he posted. Investigations continue into the diamond heist, with the police expected to release an update on Sunday afternoon. *More to follow. Namibia ranked fourth safest country in Africa: Namibia has been ranked the fourth safest country in Africa by Altezza Travel, a destination management company headquartered in Tanzania. This was announced by the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism on Saturday. Altezza Travel formulated the rankings by reviewing leading global studies from recent years, including official statistics and citizens’ perceptions of personal safety. Ministry spokesperson Romeo Muyunda said Altezza Travel ranked Namibia as one of the safest and most peaceful countries to visit in Africa. “Namibia has long been one of the most politically stable countries, with infrastructure that is generally good and the tourism industry is well-developed. “Namibia was ranked fourth after Mauritius in first place, Ghana in second, and Zambia in third place. This ranking points out our peaceful nature as Namibians, but also highlights that our collective effort to ensure peace and stability prevails is being recognised.” Muyunda commended the Namibian people, security clusters and law enforcement agencies for fostering law and order in the country. “Safety is an important factor in the travel and tourism sectors, therefore, this ranking gives Namibia more recognition around the globe and will steer more recommendations by travellers to visit the country. “We believe Namibia, a young democracy with a population of just over three million, has a competitive advantage,” said Muyunda, noting that Namibia has the potential to be the safest country in Africa. The rankings come amid an ongoing tourism safety campaign spearheaded by the ministry, in collaboration with the Namibian Police, tour operators and selected regional councils, among others. “We must, as a country, prioritise peace and stability, as this will not only attract tourists but also much-needed investors that will enhance economic development,” he said. Muyunda highlighted that Namibia has a very stable political environment, complemented by enabling laws and policies. “We have seen a seamless and peaceful transition of power from three presidents contributing to the rankings. We would like to encourage the country’s citizens to work together in ensuring the protection of our natural resources and make Namibia a safer place for our local and international visitors. By such dedication, we may strive to rank first place in the near future,” he added.
