Final Fantasy XV[b] merupakan sebuah permainan video berperanan aksi dunia terbuka yang dibangunkan dan diterbitkan oleh Square Enix untuk PlayStation 4, Xbox One dan Microsoft Windows. Merupakan judul kelima belas dalam siri Final Fantasy, permainan ini dilancarkan untuk PS4 dan Xbox One pada November 2016, dan akan dilancarkan untuk Windows pada awal 2018. Permainan ini menampilkan persekitaran dunia terbuka dan sistem pertarungan berasaskan aksi, menampilkan sistem penukaran senjata pantas, magik unsur, dan unsur-unsur lain seperti penggunaan kenderaan dan perkhemahan.

Final Fantasy XV bertempat di dunia fiksyen Eos. Kesemua negara di dunia, kecuali kerajaan Lucis, telah dijajah oleh empayar Niflheim. Noctis Lucis Caelum, putera mahkota Lucis, menjalani pencarian untuk menuntut semula tanah airnya dan Kristal magiknya setelah ia dirampas oleh Niflheim pada malam perjanjian damai antara dua negara. Namun demikian, dia mendapati bahawa Kristal tersebut terletak di tengah-tengah ancaman yang lebih hebat kepada Eos, dan peranannya sebagai bakal raja merupakan kunci kepada usaha pencegahan kemusnahan dunia. Permainan ini berkongsi tema dengan Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy, satu subsiri permainan yang dihubungkan oleh satu mitos sama termasuklah Final Fantasy XIII dan Final Fantasy Type-0.

Pembangunan permainan ini bermula pada tahun 2006 sebagai judul sampingan PlayStation 3 bertajuk Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Tetsuya Nomura bertindak sebagai pengarah dan pereka watak asal, merekabentuk watak-watak dan konsep keseluruhan. Selepas enam tahun pembangunannya, ia secara rasmi dijenamakan semula sebagai judul utama seterusnya pada tahun 2012, dengan Nomura digantikan sebagai pengarah oleh Hajime Tabata, yang mana pembangunannya berhijrah kepada pelantar generasi kelapan. Untuk memperkembangkan ceritanya tanpa perlu membangunkan permainan tambahan, satu projek multimedia dipanggil "Final Fantasy XV Universe" direka: produknya merangkumi dua permainan bimbit, satu siri anime, satu filem penampilan, dan satu permainan berasaskan realiti maya. Semasa dilancarkan, Final Fantasy XV mendapat penerimaan yang sangat menggalakkan bagi gaya permainan, watak, emosi dan visual. Setakat Januari 2018, permainan ini telah terjual sebanyak 7 juta unit di seluruh dunia. Versi permainan yang dikemaskini berjudul Final Fantasy XV: Royal Edition (Edisi Diraja) dengan kesemua kemas kini terdahulu dan kandungan tambahan telah diumumkan untuk PlayStation 4 dan Xbox One dan dijadualkan akan dilancarkan bersama-sama edisi PC pada awal 2018.[1]

Gaya permainan

Final Fantasy XV merupakan permainan berperanan aksi dunia terbuka di mana pemain mengawal watak utama Noctis sepanjang perjalanannya menyelusuri dunia Eos. Tatkala ditemani tiga sahabatnya Gladiolus, Ignis dan Prompto, Noctis merupakan satu-satunya watak yang boleh dikawal terus oleh pemain: dia boleh melayari melalui pergerakan ringkas, melompat di atas halangan kecil, memecut pada masa terhad, dan melakukan aksi berasaskan konteks seperti berlincung di sebalik objek.[2][3] Kerajaan Lucis merupakan kawasan daratan bersambungan yang besar yang boleh diterokai dengan menapak, menggunakan kereta mereka "Regalia", ataupun chocobo, sejenis burung tunggangan ulangan dalam siri Final Fantasy.[4][5] Kedua-dua Regalia dan Chocobo yang dipilih boleh diubah suai oleh pemain, dan Chocobo boleh menyertai pertarungan jika hubungannya dengan watak cukup kuat. Sementara Chocobo hanya boleh dikawal secara manual, Regalia boleh dikawal secara manual atau automatik. Kumpulan Noctis boleh bergerak pantas ke kawasan yang dibuka pada peta dunia. Regalia mesti diisi bahan apinya secara berkala di stesen minyak.[6][7][8] Di bandar-bandar yang boleh dilawati, terdapat rumah tumpangan dan hotel di mana mereka boleh menginap, kedai di mana barang dan peralatan boleh dibeli dengan mata wang dalam permainan gil, dan pemberi maklumat tempatan, watak bukan pemain (NPC) yang memberikan maklumat mengenai pencarian, daripada misi jalan cerita utama kepada pencarian sampingan. Pencarian sampingan boleh juga didiapati daripada NPC di pekan-pekan.[2][8] Semasa sesetengah babak cerita, pilihan dialog muncul untuk Noctis, dengan pilihan dialog mengubah maklum balas daripada NPC.[8] Permainan ini mempunyai dua tahap kesukaran, Mudah dan Biasa, dengan pemain boleh menukar antara kedua-duanya..[9][10] Dalam mod Mudah, makhluk seruan Carbuncle akan muncul sekali setiap pertarungan untuk menghidupkan semula Noctis apabila dia ditewaskan.[11]

Sistem pertarungan

Permainan ini menggunakan sistem pertarungan masa nyata berasaskan aksi yang dipanggil sistem Active Cross Battle. Dalam sistem ini, pemain tidak lagi menggunakan antara muka berasaskan menu; sebaliknya, pemain memilih perintah yang dipetakan terus pada butang-butang alat pengawal, seperti "Serang", "Bertahan", dan "Barang".[3] Pertarungan berlaku di dalam persekitaran semasa tanpa beralih ke arena berasingan, dan boleh merangkumi daripada dataran termuka kepada bangunan tertutup.[2][12] Semasa menghampiri musuh, satu meter ancaman akan muncul pada bahagian atas paparan, yang menjadi semakin besar apabila kumpulan semakin menghampiri musuh. Sebaik sahaja kumpulan cukup hampir dengan musuh dan menyerang ataupun dikesan, pertarungan bermula. Melarikan diri daripada musuh serta berada di luar zon pertarungan menamatkan pertarungan. Semasa pertarungan, setiap watak mempunyai nilai nyawa (HP), dan Noctis juga memiliki nilai magik (MP). HP berkurangan setiak kali watak diserang, manakala MP Noctis pulih mengikut masa semasa tidak bertarung ataupun semasa tidak menggunakan keupayaan berkaitan seperti melompat masa ataupun kemahiran senjata khas. Jika HP seseorang watak jatuh ke tahap sifar, dia memasuki mod Bahaya, yang mana had HP maksimum beransur-ansur merosot; watak tersebut tewas sekiranya kesemua HP maksimum mereka hilang. Sesetengah musuh, seperti Syaitan, berupaya menurunkan had HP dengan serangan mereka. Jika Noctis ditewaskan, terdapat satu tempoh singkat di mana barang penghidupan semula mesti digunakan. Jika pemain gagal melakukannya, permainan berakhir.[2]

Noctis boleh melakukan empat tindakan semasa pertarungan: serangan biasa; mempertahankan diri, yang menyekat dan menangkis serangan; lompatan masa, yang membawa Noctis ke kawasan sasaran seperti musuh lain ataupun titik luar halangan, dan menggunakan barangan. Terdapat pilihan "Mod Tunggu", di mana kesemua masukan pemain terhenti dan pertarungan dihentikan seketika, dan pemain berupaya memilih musuh baru untuk diserang atau tindakan untuk diambil dalam satu tempoh masa tertentu.[2][12] Satu pilihan yang terdapat pada Noctis dan Ignis dalam Mod Tunggu ialah Libra, satu keupayaan untuk memaparkan nilai nyawa, kekuatan dan kelemahan musuh.[2] Noctis mempunyai capaian kepada pelbagai jenis senjata, termasuklah pedang sebelah tangan atau dua belah tangan, senjata berbatang, kapak, perisai, senjata api dan pisau. Senjata-senjata tersebut muncul dari udara semasa Noctis berlawan, dan boleh ditukar secara manual oleh pemain. Jenis senjata yang dilengkapkan menentukan kelajuan serangan dan jumlah kemusnahan pada serangan biasa. Di samping serangan biasa, terdapat serangan yang menghasilkan kemusnahan lebih besar bergantung kepada kedudukan Noctis seperti "Serangan Tepi" atau "Serangan Belakang", di samping serangan Lompatan Masa. Serangan musuh boleh ditangkis, dan bergantung kepada kualiti tangkisan Noctis boleh menyerang balas. Jika menggunakan senjata jenis perisai, sekatan yang berjaya boleh mengejutkan musuh, menjadikan mereka terdedah kepada serangan.[2][7] Senjata-senjata berkaitan cerita ialah Senjata Diraja, yang mana Noctis boleh menyerunya untuk serangan khas dipanggil "Armiger", yang mana meternya diisi semasa pertarungan: sementara ia lebih berkuasa daripada senjata biasa, Senjata Diraja menggunakan HP setiap kali menggunakannya.[6] Noctis boleh juga menggunakan dua kelas senjata api—Pistol, yang merangkumi daripada pistol tangan kepada senapang; dan Jentera, senjata berkuasa yang kesannya berubah-ubah bergantung kepada jenis yang digunakan, daripada menjana gelombang kejutan berkuasa kepada yang menghasilkan kemusnahan meluas.[13]

Teman-teman Noctis, sementara dikawal oleh kecerdasan buatan permainan, mereka juga boleh dikawal melalui perintah kontekstual. Apabila Noctis berjaya menangkis serangan musuh, atau melaksanakan Serangan Tepi atau Serangan Belakang, serangan kerjasama antaranya dengan teman-temannya dipanggil Serangan Berhubungan boleh dipicukan. Semasa pertarungan, satu meter dipanggil Tech Bar diisi. Sebaik penuh, Noctis boleh memerintahkan teman-temannya untuk melakukan serangan khas dipanggil Teknik: Gladiolus melakukan serangan meluas menggunakan pedangnya, Ignis menggunakan pisaunya untuk menanda musuh supaya Noctis boleh melakukan serangan lompatan masa, dan Prompto menggunakan senjata apinya untuk melancarkan satu suar yang mengalih perhatian musuh dan memusnahkan Syaitan. Selepas setiap satunya, Noctis boleh melakukan serangan susulan. Noctis juga boleh menggunakan Armiger Berantai, di mana dia mengagihkan Senjata Dirajanya kepada rakan-rakannya sebelum melancarkan satu serangan.[6][14]

Magik dibahagikan kepada dua jenis: Unsur dan magik Cincin.[14] Unsur terbahagi kepada tiga jenis: Api, Ais dan Petir. Tenaga unsur diambil dari titik-titik khas di serata peta dunia, disimpan di dalam kelalang khas dan digunakan untuk mencipta bom-bom magik yang boleh digunakan pada musuh. Magik Unsur boleh juga digabungkan dengan beberapa barangan khas untuk menambah kesan baharu, seperti memulihkan nyawa ahli kumpulan tatkala memusnahkan musuh. Kesemua Noctis dan rakan-rakannya boleh menggunakan magik Unsur.[2][14] Magik Cincin, diperolehi sebaik Noctis memiliki dan melengkapkan diri dengan satu barangan berkaitan jalan cerita dipanggil Cincin Lucii, berupaya mencapai keupayaan magik yang lebih berkuasa seperti "Maut", yang menyedut nyawa musuh.[14] Selepas tahap tertentu pada permainan, Noctis boleh menyeru raksasa seruan dipanggil Astral, yang membantu kumpulan dengan melancarkan satu serangan yang dahsyat. Raksasa seruan yang ditampilkan merupakan raksasa biasa dalam siri termasuklah Titan, Ramuh, Leviathan dan Shiva. Jenis serangan mereka, dan juga sama ada mereka akan membantu atau tidak, amat bergantung kepada persekitaran serta syarat-syarat tertentu: misalnya, Leviathan hanya boleh diseru di kawasan terbuka yang mempunyai jasad air berhampiran (seperti laut, sungai atau tasik).[7][14][15] Pada satu titik tertentu pada jalan cerita, Noctis turut disertai watak jemputan yang mempunyai Serangan Berhubungan dan Teknik mereka tersendiri.[16]

Tahap kemajuan watak

Selepas setiap pertarungan, setiap watak menerima mata pengalaman (EXP), tetapi tidak naik aras setelah mengumpul sejumlah mata EXP. Sebaliknya, mata EXP dihimpunkan dan pemain perlu ke zon selamat dipanggil "Tempat Perlindungan" sama ada di hotel, rumah tumpangan, karavan dan tapak perkhemahan. Sepasa kumpulan berehat pada waktu malam, setiap aras watak meningkat bergantung kepada jumlah EXP terkumpul. Jika tewas dalam pertarungan, kesemua EXP yang dikumpul sehingga kali terakhir naik aras akan hilang terus. Aktiviti di dunia memberikan Mata Keupayaan (AP). AP digunakan pada Ascension, sistem peningkatan taraf permainan, yang dibahagikan kepada pokok-pokok kemahiran dipanggil "Astralsphere". Setiap Astralsphere disusun mengikut jenis, dikaitkan dengan magik, pertarungan atau keupayaan pasif. Menggunakan AP membuka nod dalam Astralsphere, yang seterusnya memberikan capaian kepada nod lain yang memerlukan jumlah AP yang lebih tinggi untuk membukanya.[2][7]

Sahabat-sahabat Noctis setiap satunya mempunyai kemahiran tersendiri yang boleh ditingkatkan arasnya mengikut penggunaan, serta memberi kesan kepada peralatan. Keupayaan memancing Noctis semakin bertambah baik apabila semakin kerap dia memancing dan semakin baik barangan yang digunakannya, yang mana turut merebak kepada peralatannya. Kemahilan kemandirian Gladiolus meningkat berasaskan jarak setiap kumpulan mengembara dalam sehari, yang menambah baik mutu peralatan dan barangan mereka. Kemahiran memasak Ignis boleh dipertingkatkan berasaskan bahan-bahan yang digunakan sama ada dibeli di kedai atau dijumpai di hutan, dan masakannya memberikan penggalak kepada kumpulan. Prompto mengambil gambar sepanjang perjalanan kumpulan, dan kualiti kemahirannya meningkat mengikut masa.[2][7]

Sinopsis

Tempat

Final Fantasy XV bertempat di dunia menyerupai Bumi dikenali sebagai Eos,[17] yang terbahagi kepada tiga benua: Lucis, Accordo, dan Niflheim. Lucis, terletak di sebelah timur laut Eos, merupakan sebuah kerajaan yang memiliki satu artifak magik yang dikenali sebagai Kristal, dianugerahkan kepada Wangsa Caelum yang memerintah oleh dewa-dewi sejak zaman dahulu lagi dan dicapai melalui sebentuk cincin pusaka yang dipanggil Cincin Lucii.[18] Accordo, terletak di bahagian selatan Eos, merupakan sebuah negara pulau yang terbentuk melalui kesatuan bandar-bandar perdagangan bebas. Benua di sebelah barat pula menempatkan Empayar Niflheim berteknologi termaju dan negara Tenebrae, yang diperintah oleh Peramal—seorang biarawati dengan keupayaan untuk berkomunikasi dengan dewa-dewi dan menghentikan Starscourge, sejenis wabak yang menyerap kesemua cahaya semula jadi dan membenarkan raksasa nokturnal dikenali sebagai Syaitan untuk merayau-rayau di dunia.[19][20] Pusat bagi pengetahuan mengenai Eos ialah Astral, enam makhluk suci yang menjaga dunia semula jadi dan diceraikan daripada hal ehwal manusia,[7][21][22] dan Raja Sebenar, satu watak legenda yang diramalkan akan muncul apabila kegelapan mengancam dunia.[23]

Selama berkurun lamanya, Lucis berperang dengan negara tentera Niflheim, yang telah menjajah sebahagian besar Eos; Tenebrae mengekalkan autonomi politik terhad berikutan pengaruh Peramal, manakala Accordo bebas mengendalikan hal ehwal negara sendiri selagi tidak mengganggu kepentingan Niflheim.[24] Sementara itu, ibu negara Lucis, Insomnia kekal belum dijajah kerana adanya Tembok—satu perisan magik yang dikuasakan oleh Kristal yang menyekat kemaraan tentera Magitek Niflheim, tetapi menghabisnya kuasa nyawa raja.[25] Pada awal permainan, satu gencatan senjata diisytiharkan antara kedua-dua negara, dan sebagai sebahagian daripada perjanjian damai, satu perkahwinan diaturkan antara Putera Noctis dari Lucis dan Puan Lunafreya dari Tenebrae.[26]

Watak-watak

Dua watak utama ialah Noctis Lucis Caelum, putera mahkota Lucis dan satu-satunya watak yang boleh dimainkan yang kehilangan ayahandanya semasa penjajahan Niflheim, dan tunangnya Lunafreya Nox Fleuret, seorang Peramal dan bekas puteri Tenebrae. Noctis ditemani tiga sahabatnya sepanjang perjalanannya : Gladiolus Amicitia, pengawal peribadi Noctis; Ignis Scientia, seorang pakar taktik tentera dan penasihat Noctis; dan Prompto Argentum, sahabat Noctis dari kalangan rakyat biasa. Watak jemputan termasuklah Cor Leonis, seorang pahlawan legenda Lucis yang bertindak sebagai pelindung kepada kumpulan Noctis, dan Iris Amicitia, adik perempuan Gladiolus. Watak penting lain termasuklah Regis Lucis Caelum CXIII, raja Lucis dan ayahanda Noctis, Gentiana, pembantu Lunafreya; dan Cid Sophiar dan cucunya Cindy Aurum, mekanik yang menyelenggara kereta kumpulan Noctis. Empayar Niflheim diperintah oleh Maharaja Iedolas Aldercapt. Sekutu Aldercapt termasuklah Ardyn Izunia, canselor empayar dan juga antagonis utama permainan; Ravus Nox Fleuret, abang Lunafreya dan komander tertinggi angkatan tentera empayar; Verstael Besithia, ketua penyelidik empayar; dan Aranea Highwind, seorang tentera upahan yang berkhidmat kepada Niflheim.

Plot

Di Lucis, Putera Noctis dan sahabatnya Gladiolus, Ignis, and Prompto sedang dalam perjalanan ke ibu negara Accordo, Altissia, di mana Noctis akan melangsungkan perkahwinan dengan Lunafreya.[26] Sepanjang perjalanan, mereka menerima berita serangan Niflheim terhadap bandar raya Insomnia dan kecurian Kristal, serta berita Raja Regis telah dibunuh.[27][28] Mereka bertemu komander Crownsguard, Cor Leonis, yang menugaskan Noctis untuk mengumpul senjata diraja Lucii—raja-raja purba Lucis—untuk menyelamatkan Kristal dan menuntut kembali takhtanya. Kumpulannya terserempak dengan canselor Niflheim, Ardyn Izunia, yang menunjuk arah mereka ke Astral Titan di Disc of Cauthess. Selepas dia memenuhi ujian daripada Titan dan melawan gerombolan askar imperial yang menyerang Astral, Noctis mendapat tahu bahawa Lunafreya telah memujuk Titan untuk meminjamkan kuasanya. Mereka terus mengembara di serata Lucis, mengumpulkan senjata pusaka Noctis dan bertemu dengan Astral Ramuh dengan bantuan Gentiana, roh pembantu Lunafreya.[N 1] Sepanjang perjalanan mereka, mereka mendapati waktu siang semakin pendek, disusuli peningkatan bilangan Syaitan. Kumpulan Noctis akhirnya tiba di Altissia, di mana Lunafreya berlindung. Lunafreya membangkitkan Astral Leviathan supaya Noctis dapat meminjam kuasanya, tetapi Leviathan mengamuk apabila tentera Niflheim datang menyerang. Ardyn mendedahkan wajah sebenar dengan mencederakan Lunafreya sehingga nazak, mengganggu upacara tersebut; namun, dia berjaya membangkitkan kuasa Noctis, membolehkannya mengalahkan Leviathan.[N 2] Semasa Noctis tidak sedarkan diri, dalam mimpinya dia didatangi roh Lunafreya, yang memberikannya Cincin Lucii. Noctis bangun dan mendapati Altissia sedang kucar-kacir, manakala Ignis menjadi buta semasa pertarungan. Kumpulannya meneruskan perjalanan ke ibu negara Niflheim, Gralea dengan menaiki kereta api; sementara Ignis menjadi buta dand Noctis terus bersedih atas kematian Lunafreya menyebabkan berlaku persengketaan antara Noctis dengan Gladiolus sehinggalah Ignis memaksa mereka berdamai. Ardyn memperdayakan Noctis sehingga menyebabkan dia tidak sengaja menghumban Prompto daripada kereta api,[N 3] dan mwmbawa lari Prompto dan Kristal ke kubu utama Gralea, mendedahkan bahawa kuasa Kristal boleh memusnahkan Syaitan. Noctis meneruskan perjalanan ke Gralea—menerima restu Astral Shiva daripada Gentiana, yang mendedahkan dirinya sebagai bentuk manusia bagi Shiva—di mana kumpulannya mendapati bandar raya tersebut sudah dikuasai oleh Syaitan-syaitan milik Ardyn. Kuasa Noctis disekat, memaksanya untuk menggunakan Cincin Lucii. Selepas menyelamatkan Prompto, yang mendedahkan dirinya berasal dari Niflheim,[29] kumpulannya terus berlawan menerusi kubu tersebut, bertemu dengan abang Lunafreya, Ravus dan maharaja Niflheim, Iedolas Aldercapt, yang mana kedua-duanya ditukarkan menjadi Syaitan oleh Ardyn.

Terpaksa berpisah daripada kumpulannya, Noctis akhirnya tiba di tempat Kristal, tersebut berada, tetapi dia ditarik perlahan-lahan ke dalamnya. Ardyn kemudian muncul dan mendedahkan identiti sebenarnya sebagai Ardyn Lucis Caelum, bekas pemulih yang dipilih oleh Kristal dua ribu tahun dahulu.[30][31] Ardyn melindungi Eos dengan menyerap Syaitan ke dalam dirinya, tetapi dilabelkan sebagai tidak suci oleh Astral, dan dilabelkan sebagai syaitan oleh nenek moyang Noctis.[32][33] Setelah hidup kekal abadi disebabkan kuasa Syaitan, Ardyn sejak itu mahu membalas dendam terhadap keturunan dirajanya dan Kristal, mempercepatkan penyebaran wabak Starscourge sementara menunggu Raja Sebenar muncul supaya dia boleh memusnahkan kedua-duanya.[34] Semasa di dalam Kristal, Noctis bertemu Astral Bahamut; dia mendapat tahu bahawa dialah Raja Sebenar yang diramalkan itu, yang akan membersihkan wabak Starscourge dan mengembalikan cahaya kepada Eos. Noctis mempersiapkan dirinya untuk memenuhi takdirnya, mengetahui bahawa ia akan bakal meragut nyawanya; sebaik sahaja dia kembali ke alam dunia, dia mendapati sepuluh tahun sudah berlalu.[35][N 4] Dia bersatu semula dengan rakan-rakannya, yang tidak henti-henti menghalang serangan Syaitan sejak Eos ditenggelami kegelapan kekal, sebelum bertolak ke runtuhan Insomnia. During the party's travels, Prompto asks Gladiolus about a scar he acquired during a time when he took his leave of absence. Gladiolus recalls his encounter with the legendary warrior Gilgamesh. Disturbed at how easily the party is defeated in combat by Ravus, Gladiolus begins to question his ability to protect Noctis in his role as the King's Shield. Seeking the means to acquire greater power, he calls upon Cor Leonis to accompany him to the Tempering Grounds, a network of millennia-old caverns where generations of Crownsguard soldiers have sought to prove their strength against Gilgamesh, the Blademaster. Cor agrees, but warns Gladiolus that by venturing into the caverns he faces certain death and that even if he survives, he may have nothing to show for it.

As Gladiolus and Cor enter the caverns, the disembodied voice of Gilgamesh taunts them while they encounter the bodies of fallen soldiers reanimated by their souls. Cor reveals that the souls swore fealty to Gilgamesh in both life and death, and that the souls of fallen soldiers remain trapped the caverns. Gladiolus passes each of Gilgamesh's trials and gradually learns more about Cor's previous expedition to the Tempering Grounds thirty years ago. Headstrong, reckless and arrogant, Cor confronted Gilgamesh in his inner sanctum, but fell from the cliffs into the waters below without defeating him. When he returned from the Tempering Ground he was dubbed 'The Immortal'. When Gladiolus reaches the inner sanctum, he must go on alone and face Gilgamesh in combat. Gilgamesh challenges him once again, repeating Cor's warning that he may be risking his life for nothing. The two fight and Gladiolus emerges victorious, but not before Gilgamesh scars him. Gilgamesh reveals that there is no ultimate power, but reminds Gladiolus that he must have been a capable warrior to defeat him and so should be reassured of his ability to defend Noctis. He offers Gladiolus his favourite sword, which is revealed to have been Cor's. Gladiolus and Cor leave the Tempering Grounds, with Gladiolus planning to reunite with the party while reflecting on the experience.

Episode Prompto

The Episode Prompto downloadable content focuses on Prompto, and as with Episode Gladiolus, runs parallel to the main story. As the party travels by train to Gralea, Ardyn appears and tricks Noctis into throwing Prompto from the train. Seemingly abandoned by his friends, Prompto spends several days wandering the frozen wastes. He very nearly freezes to death before being picked up by a magitek patrol, who bring him to the First Magitek Production Facility. When he awakens, Ardyn reappears and reveals that Prompto was intended to be a vessel for a magitek soldier before he escaped. He encourages Prompto to confront the empire's chief magitek researcher, Verstael Besithia, to learn more. As Prompto works his way through the facility, he unearths more information about Verstael's disturbing experiments with magitek. Initially intending to create an unstoppable army for the Empire by infusing soldiers with Daemonic essence, his repeated failures led him to experiment on infant children and later on clones of himself. Prompto is horrified to learn that he himself is a clone of Verstael. Verstael's exposure to Daemonic essence has driven him insane and he plans to achieve immortality by infusing himself with Daemonic energy. Prompto kills him and flees the facility, aided by Aranea Highwind.

After making camp for the night, Prompto struggles with the knowledge that he is a clone who was intended to become a weapon. He admits to Aranea his fear of being rejected by Noctis if Noctis learns his secret and divulges his plan to run away. Aranea chastises him for being too concerned about what other people think as she was enlisted by Noctis to find him. She reveals that Verstael created a new model of magitek weapon called Immortalis that she intends to destroy, but refuses Prompto's help so long as he doubts himself. Prompto is visited by the spirit of Lunafreya who reminds him of the bonds he shared with his friends, and Prompto resolves to rejoin them.

Teaming up with Aranea, Prompto infiltrates a secondary research facility located underground. They learn that Verstael found a way of binding his soul to another body, allowing him to live on in Immortalis. Verstael intends to kill the last remaining Astrals and overthrow the Empire so that he can rule Eos. Prompto and Aranea destroy the last remaining magitek prototypes, but are unable to locate Immortalis. An announcement from the system mainframe leads to Immortalis being activated, and Prompto and Aranea race back to the surface. There they witness Immortalis emerge, taking the form of an enormous magitek-infused mechanical worm. Immortalis heads towards Gralea as Prompto and Aranea try to destroy it with a machine gun mounted to a snowmobile. In destroying Immortalis, they successfully kill Verstael. Prompto and Aranea part ways, with Prompto venturing on to Gralea and Aranea returning to Tenebrae to assist in the refugee effort. They are watched by Ardyn, who sings to himself and smiles.

Episode Ignis

The Episode Ignis downloadable content focuses on Ignis, and as with previous DLC episodes, runs parallel to the main story. As Noctis and Lunafreya undertake the Trial of Leviathan in Altissia, they come under attack from the Niflheim Empire. The battle devastates the city, and with Noctis exhausted by his confrontation with Leviathan, Ignis, Gladiolus and Prompto try to save him. When imperial soldiers occupy the city, Ignis is separated from the party and must go on alone. After liberating various parts of the city, he commandeers a boat and braves the worst of the fighting to find Noctis. Still cut off, Ignis enters an uneasy truce with Ravus, who seeks to protect his sister and capture Noctis for Niflheim, knowing that the Empire needs someone of royal blood to wield the Ring of the Lucii and harness the Crystal's power.

Despite their efforts, Ignis and Ravus arrive too late to save Lunafreya, who used the last of her strength to save Noctis despite being mortally wounded. Ravus is distraught and prepares to kill Noctis for his failure to save her, arguing that all Noctis does is ask those around him to make sacrifices for him. Recalling a promise he made to King Regis as a boy and spurred on by a vision of Noctis' destiny to cleanse the Starscourge, Ignis intervenes and the two fight until Ravus sees a vision of Lunafreya's spirit. Realising that his sister's death was necessary to stop the Starscourge, Ravus relents. Their truce is short-lived as Ardyn interrupts them, overpowering both of them. He taunts Ignis as he prepares to murder Noctis, giving Ignis enough time to put on the Ring of the Lucii. Ignis earns the favour of the Kings of Lucis long enough to use the Ring, but this costs him his sight. Knowing that he cannot stop Ignis, Ardyn retreats and Ignis and Noctis are taken to safety by Gladiolus and Prompto.

In a post-credits scene, Noctis thanks Ignis for staying true to his promise to Regis as the party prepares to confront Ardyn for the final time.

Episode Ignis also contains an alternate timeline to the game called "Extra Verse" where Ignis chooses to play along with Ardyn rather than fight. He is taken to Zegnautus Keep in Gralea, where Ardyn leads him to the Crystal and reveals the truth about Noctis' fate. Unwilling to accept this, Ignis puts on the Ring of the Lucii and fights Ardyn. He makes a pact with the Kings of Lucis to sacrifice his own life to save Noctis and defeats Ardyn, who promises to return as he fades away. Noctis, Gladiolus and Prompto arrive as Ignis lays dying; Noctis willingly enters the Crystal, but not before using its power to revive Ignis. Ten years later the four protagonists return to Insomnia, where—as in the original timeline—they kill Ardyn and cleanse the Starscourge from Eos. With the light restored, Noctis takes his place as king.

Comrades

The Multiplayer Expansion: Comrades downloadable content focuses on new characters and, like previous DLC campaigns, takes place alongside the main story.

Comrades takes place six months after Noctis and his party depart for Gralea. While the Niflheim Empire has fallen, the Starscourge has begun to take effect and humanity is faced with the final few days before the onset of eternal darkness. The player takes on the role of an amnesiac Kingsglaive soldier arriving in Lestallum for the first time. Without a king to serve, the Kingsglaive have regrouped and dedicated themselves to recovering shards of the meteor that was destroyed when the Niflheim Empire attacked the Astral Titan as these shards can be used to provide power and light. However, the situation is complicated as the people of Eos no longer trust the Kingsglaive as the search for Noctis is called off and rumours of treason by the Kingsglaive during the Siege of Insomnia take hold.

As the Kingsglaive work to reconnect Eos' major settlements, rescue refugees, secure supplies and hunt dangerous Daemons, King Regis' boat—last used by Noctis when he left for Altissia—is recovered off the coast of Galdin Quay. Individual Kingsglaive soldiers start reporting mystical visions of Angelgard, an island prison between Galdin Quay and Altissia, and the decision is made to launch an expedition there. Meanwhile, the player character gradually recovers their memories and recalls Regis ordering the Kingsglaive to protect Lunafreya during the Siege of Insomnia, saving her but leaving the city defenceless and thus allowing the Niflheim Empire to conquer the city and steal the crystal, setting in motion the events of the main game. The player character is visited by the spirit of Noctis' ancestors who reveal that Regis' actions were necessary to allow Noctis to rise as the True King, and that Noctis—who by now has been drawn into the crystal—is alive but in need of the Kingsglaive. The player character travels to Galdin Quay to join the expedition to Angelgard.

When the player character arrives at Angelgard, the surviving Astrals surround the island. Bahamut demands that the Kingsglaive atone for humanity's sins and challenges the player to mortal combat, implying that the Kingsglaive had forgotten their purpose. Once defeated, Bahamut is satisfied that humanity is worth saving and unseals the prison, allowing Noctis to return to Eos. Gentiana reveals that the Astrals remained on Eos to defend Angelgard in preparation for the True King's arrival and that the Kingsglaive were created to prove humanity's worth and to meet Noctis when he was released. Now freed, Noctis meets the Kingsglaive to continue his mission to destroy Ardyn and end the Starscourge.[N 5]

Development

Final Fantasy XV was primarily developed by Square Enix's Business Division 2 studio.[36] Additional studios that helped with development included HexaDrive, XPEC Entertainment, Plusmile, Umbra, and Streamline Studios.[37][38][39][40] Staff included director Hajime Tabata; producer Shinji Hashimoto; main writer Saori Itamuro, who wrote the scenario based on the original draft by Kazushige Nojima; and art directors Tomohiro Hasegawa, Yusuke Naora and Isamu Kamikokuryo.[41][42] Character designs were by Tetsuya Nomura and Roberto Ferrari, with later revisions by Naora.[41][43][44][45] The main characters' clothing was designed by Hiromu Takahara, lead designer for Japanese fashion house Roen.[43] The soundtrack for Final Fantasy XV was composed primarily by Yoko Shimomura, while both real-time and CGI cutscenes were directed by Takeshi Nozue of Visual Works, Square Enix's in-house CGI production studio.[41][46] Logo illustration was by regular series artist Yoshitaka Amano.[20]

Development began in 2006 as a spin-off title for the PlayStation 3 called Final Fantasy Versus XIII. It was announced as part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy, a subseries of games linked by a common mythos, and ran in Square Enix's proprietary Crystal Tools engine. Developed by the team behind the Kingdom Hearts series, it was intended to be a darker entry in the Final Fantasy series than allowed in the main series.[47][48][49] Nomura was the original director, designer, and created the initial concept and scenario.[41][43] The project suffered from a prolonged and troubled development, only making fragmentary appearances over the following six years.[50][51] As early as 2007, the project's scale prompted talks of rebranding it as the next mainline entry. With the internal unveiling of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, it was decided to change it into a mainline entry, with a proposed PS3 version being scrapped due to technical troubles. The game's engine also changed, shifting to the company's new proprietary game engine Luminous Studio.[3][52][53] At the time of its rebranding and shift to next-generation consoles in 2012, Versus XIII was described as being on 20-25% complete, with Tabata saying it never took shape.[54][55]

When Tabata took over from Nomura, the entire development team was reshuffled and development started over again, although he worked as a co-director with Nomura until late 2013 to ensure the project remained as true as possible to its original vision.[3][50][56] Among the changes were the removal of the original story's opening, and the replacement of original heroine Stella Nox Fleuret with the similarly named Lunafreya.[57][58] The connection to Fabula Nova Crystallis was also reduced, with branding and mythos-specific terminology removed to aid in the game's marketing. Thematic, aesthetic and design elements were retained due to their core place in the world and backstory.[20][21][54][59][60] The main concept behind Final Fantasy XV was "a fantasy based on reality", with the world being very similar to Earth and having fantasy elements gradually intruding into an otherwise normal setting. In pursuit of this, locations in Eos were based on real-world locations such as Tokyo, Venice and the Bahamas.[5][20][37]

Initially announced in 2006 alongside XIII and Type-0, the game was publicly rebranded at the 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo, with regular updates on the title beginning the following year.[51] A game demo titled Final Fantasy XV: Episode Duscae was released in March 2015 as a limited addition to Final Fantasy Type-0 HD.[61][62][63] Its initial worldwide release, September 30, was announced in March as a big event in Los Angeles titled "Uncovered: Final Fantasy XV".[64] Despite initially being scheduled for September 30, further polishing work resulted in the date being pushed back to November 29.[65][66] Story and gameplay-based downloadable content, in addition to patches to improve the game's performance were also announced.[67][68][69] On November 15, 2017, an online cooperative multiplayer expansion entitled Final Fantasy XV: Comrades, set alongside the events of the base game with player created Kingsglaive soldiers participating in battles against monsters and restoring the power grid around Lestallum. In August 2017, a version for Microsoft Windows was announced, planned for release in early 2018, which will support high-end hardware features such as 4K resolution, Dolby Atmos, Nvidia GameWorks, and a first-person perspective camera option.[70] An episodic Pocket Edition made specifically for Android, iOS, and Windows 10 mobile devices was also announced to be released in 2017.[71]

Universe

At the "Uncovered: Final Fantasy XV"[64] event, it was revealed that Final Fantasy XV had multiple pieces of tie-in media, used by staff to expand upon the story without developing multiple games.[72][73][74] Dubbed the "Final Fantasy XV Universe", it includes:

Marketing

In 2017, Square Enix announced a series of promotional tie-ins between Final Fantasy XV and other franchises. In March, the Regalia was made available to players of Forza Horizon 3, while in August another announcement was made to promote the upcoming release of Assassin's Creed Origins. Taking the form of an in-game event, the promotion introduced Assassin's Creed-themed content to the game.[75] Similarly, Final Fantasy XV-themed content was introduced to Assassin's Creed Origins in December 2017.

Final Fantasy XV received "generally favorable" reviews from critics, according to review aggregator Metacritic.[76][77]

Various game designers stated Final Fantasy XV was their favorite game of 2016, including Final Fantasy series creator, Hironobu Sakaguchi, Atlus' Shigeo Komori, Koei Tecmo's Takashi Morinaka, and Sony Interactive Entertainment's Teruyuki Toriyama and Shuhei Yoshida.[92][93]

Final Fantasy XV won numerous awards from various gaming publications, including "Game of the Year" from DualShockers,[94] CGMagazine,[95] RPG Site,[96] RPG Fan,[97] Drago D'oro (Italian game reviewers) and GameFAQs,[98] "Best RPG" (People's Choice) from IGN,[99] MMORPG,[100] RPG Site,[101] Spazio Games,[102] and PlayStation LifeStyle,[103] "Best Soundtrack" from IGN,[104] RPG Site,[105] LaPS4,[106] RPG Fan,[107] and US Gamer,[108] and "Best Cast" from Game Informer,[109] RPG Fan,[110] and US Gamer.[111] At the 2017 National Academy of Video Game Trade Reviewers Awards the game won Game, Franchise Role Playing and Song, Original or Adapted.[112]

PlayStation Blog awarded Final Fantasy XV awards in the categories of Best PS4 Game, Best Use of Pro, Best Soundtrack, and Best Visuals.[113]

In 2017, the game was nominated for "Best Visual Design" at the Golden Joystick Awards,[114] and for "Best Role-Playing Game" at The Game Awards 2017.[115] It won the award for "Best Post-Launch Support" at Game Informer's 2017 RPG of the Year Awards.[116]

Sales

Within the first twenty-four hours, Square Enix reported that Final Fantasy XV had shipped five million units worldwide in both physical shipments and digital sales—a figure which allowed the game to "break even" on development costs.[117] This gave Final Fantasy XV the biggest launch in the franchise to date. It received the most first day digital sales in Japan for a game up to that point, and set records for physical shipments and downloads in mainland Asia.[118] In Japan, the PS4 version topped Japanese gaming charts, selling 690,471 units. The Xbox One version sold 3,791 units. Total sales of both versions came to 694,262 units, down from Final Fantasy XIII but up from A Realm Reborn: Final Fantasy XIV. Second week sales in the region were 79,792 units,[119] down 88% from launch week. The game's release boosted console sales for the PS4 over the previous week by 42,102 units.[120] In the United Kingdom's all-format gaming charts ending December 3, Final Fantasy XV was the second biggest Final Fantasy launch after Final Fantasy XIII.[121] According to Square Enix, shipments had reached over six million worldwide by January 2017.[122] In May of the same year, Square announced the game and Rise of the Tomb Raider helped to increase sales and profits.[123] By January 2018, the game had sold over 7 million copies worldwide.[1]
