Red Planet
(2000)

A Sci-Fi movie worth seeing
Geez, I'm amazed at some of the negative reviews of this very watchable movie. I'm reminded of the time I saw "Lord Of The Rings" with a friend who complained through the whole movie: 'why did they leave out (this that or the other thing from the book)?' I made a point of NOT reading the books before seeing the movies so I could enjoy them as different experiences.

Ditto with this movie; I just enjoy it for what it is. I'm a lifelong die-hard Sci-Fi fan, and I agree that a lot of really bad Sci-Fi movies have been made over the years. I'm often disappointed in movies that I had a lot of high expectations of going into the experience. But I don't expect every Sci-Fi flick I see to be the be-all and end-all Perfect Experience that lots of other folks seem to expect. This is a perfectly good movie with a good cast and story line (granted not the most original in the world) with excellent special effects. But if you expect perfection...well, I don't know what to recommend, except to warn you that you're gonna be disappointed a LOT in life...

My First Mister
(2001)

A touching portrayal of an unlikely friendship
I have to confess that I enjoy anything Albert Brooks does, whether as writer or director or actor, and this movie was no exception. The friendship between Brooks the older man and the young woman stuck in "Goth" mode was portrayed pretty realistically, as if between real people, once you accept the premise that it could happen at all. Carol Kane was funny in a touching way as the mother who wants so much to be a part of her alienated daughters life that she just keeps trying and trying no matter how much her daughter rejects her advances. Nice to see a picture that, like "Lost In Translation" depicts friendship between an older man and a younger woman without sexual themes.
