Big Sky
(2020)

Soapy start, then the twist....
The first 3/4 of the show seemed to be silly soapy drama in the mountains... the teenage girls inviting trouble like fools...the girlfight ...silly.

But then, in what seemed like a casual exchange, the entire dynamic and direction of the show changed...now the way evil lurks in the seemingly benign corners of a given community, the additional layer of mystery we didn't expect and the terrifying danger of those victimized makes this a show to watch. I think it will only get better from here.

The Event
(2010)

I hope some network picks this up for a 2nd season....
I really loved this series, it was the only show this season I truly looked forward to every week. Having now watched through to the end there is one thing that I just can't stand that always happens to this kind of show, be it Vanished, Kidnapped, Flash Forward, Jericho, Kyle XY, Caprica... having hooked the viewer, but cancelled by the Nervous Nellies of the Network, the series ends on an impossible cliffhanger that NEVER gets resolved. It's SO unfair to the viewing public and really turns the viewers off from even investing in the series! This show had a riveting plot, fantastic cast and was thoroughly engrossing. Unfortunately it was up against a number of good shows on Monday nights....I had five shows between 9 and 11 that I followed between 2 TVs and my DVR, with little that interested me the rest of the week. Up against the Juggernaut that is Dancing with the Stars and the equally excellent Chicago Code I could record all the shows and watch thru the week! But aside from the Monday glut of shows, I earnestly hope that some smart minded network (USA, FX or SYFY are you listening!!!) has the sense to complete this series with another run next season. Hello, fans out there....let NBC know that we want more of this series!!!

True Beauty
(2009)

Worst show on Television
I can't believe this horrid excuse for a show is back for another season. I know networks are looking for cheap innocuous fare to fill the schedule in the summer but this is the biggest waste of airtime ever! Stupid, vapid people being judged for stupid vapid self indulgent reasons to show just how stupid and empty they are. I caught one or two episodes out of curiosity last season, just to see How Bad IT Could BE! Pretty bad, flipping channels and saw it was BACK my gag reflux started acting up. AVOID. It can cause brain damage it's so bad.

IMDb is making me write more than I want to....so my review is BAD, AWFUL, GAG ME, SUCKS, STUPID, STUPID CONTESTANTS, STUPID JUDGES, STUPID FAKEY CONTESTS, IS THE REALLY WHERE American CULTURE IS HEADED, OMG!!! Inner Beauty my foot...these people are completely empty of it!

City Island
(2009)

Funniest movie I've seen in the last decade!
I thought this film was hysterical. Knee slappingly funny! I've never seen a group of characters get themselves so tied up in knots in the plot like this before. Definitely a dysfunctional family group, each person's dysfunctional secret being held by the least likely person in the ensemble. Each actor hits the right notes in their portrayal of their character, the setting of the location and exposition of the family dynamic prepare us for the comedy to come. I agree that it has some similarities to Little Miss Sunshine, but I found this film to be much funnier, maybe because I live in New York City and I've seen the reality of these characters in action! I hope a lot of people get out to see this film because it really deserves to be seen. The cinematography is quite nice for a small picture such as this, and the whole package makes for a satisfying viewing experience. Perfect adult humor, and that's really hard to find at the movies!

Life on Mars
(2008)

Would love to see another season.
I actually really liked this show, a little nostalgia for the 70s (those clothes--and that hair!) and a different kind of show. Wish network honchos would hang on to quality shows long enough for them to find their audience. It has a really good cast, the mystery of what Sam's predicament is becomes more intriguing every week. They do seem to have left his "present" behind in the episodes...his 2008 girlfriend and coma haven't been on screen for a while. Gretchen Mol's character is developing nicely and I really wish this show would stay around for a while. I never saw the British version so can't compare them, perhaps American TV needs to stop trying to re-do British shows as they fail from just not being the British version and come up with some new ideas.
