Du levande
(2007)

Exceptional movie
Roy Anderssons "Du Levande" is not totally original as it is counter piece to Anderssons previous movie "Sånger från andra våningen". Still the movie has aura of total originality. Some conventions of movie making are still thrown away: most of the actors look nothing like what you would expect in movie and the shots take long time. Most of the time camera doesn't move but people move around it. The shots start from somewhere and many times the scenery builds up in amazing proportions. W.G. Sebald comes to mind in literature with same technique. Because of the time invested in every shot the suspension is really high in many of the scenes. There is a story and isn't - it is left for viewer to build up in his or her own mind. This movie is positive. It is determined not to see this all in negative way and at the same time will not pass the social injustices. One of the messages I got from it was that maybe all failures and accidents are not fatal after all. Great movie.

Zodiac
(2007)

Lot of surface but not enough substance
Zodiac is second of two movies I have seen directed by David Fincher. As "Seven" has been on of my favorite movies my expectations were reasonably high while regarding Zodiac.

Zodiac follows series of murders, the publicity they stir, their investigations and the characters moving in the middle of their circumstances. The pace is slow and two and half hours are spent.

The aesthetics seem to play main part. Cinematography is careful, the sets and production are well thought through all the way. Esthetics seem to miss the heart of the movie. When suddenly the buildup of skyscraper is shown in fast forward it never becomes apparent why this had to be shown. The soundtrack seems to try wok as some kind of periodical of 1960's and seventies but it never becomes apparent why these songs had to be played. They as the cinematography do not seem to serve the movie.

Script tries to hold together wide variety of facts, happenings and long time-line. Either script fails to point essential ingredients, catalysts and shake those into surprising, relieving or revealing reactions or / and actors are not able to portrait those in their performances.

In either case the movie feels like a lot of surface and not a lot of substance.

Jindabyne
(2006)

Good ingredients but bad script.
This is not a complete movie or script.

The basic story is the same as in Raymond Carvers short story and one side story on Robert Altmans film "Short Cuts". This time there is also background story of Gabriel Byrnes characters "Stewart" relationship with Laura Linneys "Claire" and there is the whole another story of aboriginals of Australia and prejudices against them. There is also story of Stewarts and Lauras son and a little bit of close social circle and how they deal. There is also story of the person who kills other person in the beginning and how this affects all.

This all is not successfully worked out in a movie. The movie is a little bit of everything but fails to show any new revelation since the short cut story or other films before. Everything is hasty and touched upon but not deep enough. Even it is two hours in length director or scriptwriter never gets deep enough inside the psyche of the characters or the richness of background stories.

The soundtrack works in same manner: great songs from time to time that are just hastily mixed down before any real impact. Couple of excellent scenes but otherwise this just falls short. This movie desperately cries for better script.

Lisbon Story
(1994)

Haunting and beautiful
This movie had the most tremendous impact on me when I first saw it - and now that I watch it again it does the same kind of magic to me. It gives impressions, but mostly it uses pictures, music, sounds to convey beauty.

The depth, what makes this more than commercial of Lisbon is the true question lying under about filmmakers wrestle with himself about the worth of making a film or any film and then again a really beautiful story about love which is drawn with only the needed lines to make you see it, but without spelling the feelings out.

The lead singer of Madredeus - Teresa Salgueiro does exceptional role without playing anyone particular - also the presence of other band members is strong - and takes the movie somewhere between real and unreal and gives the movie sleepy, dreamy like atmosphere. Wenders must have talent in casting since also the "local" people fit in perfectly and are so easy about being in front of camera.
