Kozhipannai Chelladurai
(2024)

A very touching story!
This was a touching story with a cast and crew who understood their assignment and rendered a natural production😃

Kudos to the DP for meticulous camera movements that deepened the storytelling. It was great to see new faces and atypical characters who enriched the narrative.

The downside of the film was the screenwriting. There was no poignant climax, plus the chain of events was monotonous, nothing too exciting about the scenario. Making the story a bit forgettable at the end of the day.

Overall, job well done and we look forward to seeing more of these actors on screen. Thank you for telling this story!

At Ease
(2024)

Goof intention, weak execution
DELICIOUS

"At Ease" was an innovative story that needed to be told. It touched themes of depression and PTSD that are seldom seen in Nollywood.

Kudos to the location scouts/set designers who elevated the emotions of the narrative

BLAND

The story craved for actors that would move the audience due to the very sensitive and traumatic atmosphere, yet Anee Icha (playing the Major's wife) struggled to shed a tear. Samuel Asa'Ah (playing the Major) sustained the same face and his line delivery was not convincing. The boy playing the son lacked charm. Actually, the only person who saved the day was the lady playing Musa's wife 🙂

The green color grading was overpowering, defeating the purpose of showcasing Nigerian's flag and army.

Many scenes were cut too short, not giving us the time to savor the moment (e.g. The scene when Anee finds her husband in a difficult position towards the end)

ADR killed the momentum, making the dialogues too studio-ish.

Dialogues could have been written in a more poignant way to make the film memorable and send a deep message on PTSD.

With Difficulty Comes Ease
(2024)

A breath of fresh air!
The film was a breath of fresh air and a powerful tale that needed to be told! Korede Azeez really stepped up her game, and this movie stands above her previous works👏

DELICIOUS

-There's nothing better than an original script, especially when Nollywood tends to recycle the same stories. Seeing a widow burdened by financial woes and struggling to connect in a different environment was gripping from start to finish

-Solid performance: Uzoamaka Aniunoh (playing Zainab) understood her assignment and delivered! Her body language and line delivery were in unison; she poured out her intense hardship.

Caleb Richards (playing Rayyan) was adequately elegant and diplomatic😍

-The film made great use of "less is more" with few dialogues in order to give us the chance to appreciate the unspoken emotions

-Greatly appreciate that the screenplay dived into the psychology of the characters. We were able to understand how Zainab forged her identity and other characters' personalities

BLAND

-Sound engineering was regrettably unrefined, lots of background noise😣

-The lack of a parallel story made the film a bit monotonous with Zainab appearing in every scene

Overall, kudos to Korede Azeez for improving her craft!

Singappenney
(2024)

Winners are NOT quitters!
Singappenney was a very beautiful watch😃 A story loaded with powerful dialogue and inspiring sequences. It felt like watching a motivational speech on screen that spurred women to be determined and resilient in male-dominated societies.

The movie was definitely different from the typical sports films because it placed a great accent on the necessity to keep on rising up no matter how many times you fall. Featuring people like Madhavi Latta was a dynamic move to highlight the lesson that 'winners are not quitters' (we will definitely be buying her book😀)

Performance was spot on, it was refreshing to see new faces.

ADR/dubbing was not refined, at times, disconnecting us from the characters. Few scenes appeared rushed, while cinematography featured non-cinematic shots in certain segments

Overall, job well done!!

Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti
(2024)

Just when you give up on Nollywood, then comes Bolanle Austen-Peters!
Nollywood has been releasing a large amount of mediocre movies lately that you can only lose hope on the industry.

Then comes Bolanle with an impeccable production!! You can tell she puts a great accent on quality because the dialogues, cinematography, sound, editing, etc were so carefully executed😃

It was a breath of fresh air to have a historical movie that took us back in the past and taught inspiring lessons on courage, resilience, and determination.

How can you even complain when you have fantastic actors like Kehinde Bankole, Omowunmi Dada, and Patrick Diabuah?? 😍

Thank you for telling this story and we look forward to more films of this genre. Well done!!

A Father's Love
(2024)

An impeccable story after a long time!
A Father's Love" was a great delight!!

A clean and decent watch with a scenario that made sense after being so disappointed with latest Nollywood films.

You could tell the movie was DPed by a foreigner because Rangwetsane deepened the narrative through his lens.

First time seeing David Jones David on screen and he sublimed his role, he made us emotional with his tender loving care that we almost cried. Nothing to criticize when Yvonne Jegede is in the building. The couple just added zest with their chemistry, The children were so adorable, even baby Auta. Funnybone and Uche Jombo 👌

Impeccable directing and inspiring story💥💥

The Kujus Again
(2023)

Biodun Stephen needs a break
'The Kujus Again' opened up to a pleasant ambiance giving us a smooth introduction from where we left off in part one. We were able to see the changes that occurred in each character's life, everything was going well.

Sadly, the joy was short-lived as the scenario began to slowly crumble with an uneventful and cliche plot centered on Kunle Remi's surprise😔

The absence of the kids from part 1 already created a big void, as if that wasn't enough exciting people like Femi Jacobs, Benjamin Touitou (playing a fashion designer), and Chris Iheuma (playing Otunba) were quickly erased from the script. This may have been caused by schedule conflicts in real life, but still on still, we're an audience waiting to be entertained, not trying to figure out why this and that character was absent.

Don Jazzy's role added no zest, he was just being Don Jazzy rather than bringing a new vibe to the story.

Abiola Ladipo's constant use of excess smoke in the scenes greatly tampered the cinematography. The dialogues and sequence of events lacked the vigor and richness from 'Introducing The Kujus'.

It's becoming overwhelming to see Biodun Stephen coming out with so many movies that lack finesse and substance. Focus should be placed more on quality than quantity😔

Cake
(2022)

Cake it till you Make it!
Cake, a simple title for a simple plot

The film was innovative as it centered on a pastry chef; it was colorful and did a great job showing the delicious assortment of cakes😍

Folu Storms is a hidden gem as she saved the day! She was stunning, showcasing different emotions when needed. She has a bright future in acting.

Tope Tedela, sadly, deflated the momentum; he was not memorable at alllllll. He was just there, going through his lines without taking on the spirit of his character, even Sophie Alakija stepped up her game!

The story was in desperate of genuine and inspirational dialogues as well as a change of scenery. The many bakery shop scenes killed the vibe😓 Why not show Folu's church as she always talked about her pastor?

The comedy coming from the.baker's assistant seemed forced and the scenario was plain: we mapped out the end from the beginning, thus there was no enthusiasm left😟

One Too Many
(2022)

Only Chimezie Imo saved the day!
One Too Many was an important and original story to tell highlighting the plight of the innocent brutalized by the police.

Chimezie Imo saved the day by rendering a pure depiction of a helpless youngster in need of justice, he was believable😃 He once again or should we say many times again showcased his amazing skills.

Dakore, Dakore, Dakore😭😭😭 The lady could not play the role of a caring and supportive mother! Even Omowunmi Dada showed more care toward Chimezie than her. Dakore simply recited her lines, stood up without meaningful body language; it was painful to see😖 Her poor performance deflated the magnitude of the movie as we were waiting to see a torn and shattered mother due to circumstances.

And in the midst of sorrow, she was still wearing heavy make-up and dressing up🙄

The court room scenes were flat with the lawyers not using persuasive and striking arguments and the overall acting failed to make the audience walk the journey with the characters.

We could only sympathized with the story but not the screenplay as it lacked lots of logic...😔

A Green Fever
(2023)

What😱😱😱
A Green Fever is a far cry from Taiwo Egunjobi's "All Na Vibes". And it was very hard to digest that the movie was produced by the "God Calling" filmmakers...

The great aspect about A Green Fever was the color grading which nicely accentuated the set design and characters.

Aside from that, the film had no climax or character development. Continuity and logic suffered, acting was shallow, and the overall screenplay lacked suspense and thrill. Moreover, the camera operator cut actors' faces in the frames😢

For 1h23m, the dialogues were plain, not moving the story forward, so much that it became challenging to stay focused.

It is quite heartbreaking because this story could have been sizzling and meaningful by empowering all characters, giving them different dimensions, but alas...😫

Love and Life
(2023)

a common story with a pinch of originality
Love and Life was not a bad movie and it wasn't an extraordinary one. It's a story we've seen many times before but this time with a pinch of originality coming from the grieving element

DELICIOUS

-No need to worry when Rita Dominic and Nse Ikpe-Etim are in the building😃

Rita moved us by unleashing the agony a widow goes through while Nse was the carefree friend and stalking lover, yet fragile when needed to be

-Featuring a character grieving the loss of a husband was different to see. It brought a new and natural vibe to a common story.

-"And the funny thing is, they're worried about me, when their lives are blowing up in front of them" A powerful line that highlighted how people always pity those who've lost their loved ones, while their own living conditions are much worse

BLAND

-Chidi Mokeme😓😰 It was challenging to watch him. The guy has not improved since the old Nollywood times.

He was just repeating word after word without feeling what he was saying...why now??😭

-Love and Life was the typical tale about girlfriends going through relationship issues and advising one another.

There was not much to look forward to. The climax was so discreet that the pace of the movie wasn't even altered.

No striking character development, plus, the turn of events at the end didn't follow much logic, like...

-Cinematography and editing didn't add to the storytelling; it was more like videography than cinematography😔

Dear Friend
(2022)

an amazing story well told and acted
Dear Friend😊 We had a good laughter, were entertained but also shaken. Matter of fact, we're still recovering from the shocking truth of this story...

DELICIOUS

-Can we clap for the casting team? They did a terrific job in selecting fabulous actors to play the 6 friends!

They were superb! The chemistry was so authentic: the pranks, dances, and enjoyment were great to watch

-The acting was purely and truly NATURAL. Tovino Thomas is an ace as we all know. We connected with each of the friends; their attitude was so familiar making us feel relaxed

-The director caught our attention from the very first seconds of the movie; there were no boring segments.

We were navigating with him, savoring every moment with the group of friends. Thank you for the scenes that introduced us to each character to know them better

-The story was very deep and distressing, to say the least; it revealed the inner heart of man...

-Good job on the poignant dialogues, the lighting, and pensive score

-What made Dear Friend special was the exploration of friendship: What does it really mean? What is the level of commitment? Or trust?

BLAND

-Teeny tiny little note about the audio quality that wasn't consistent throughout the film.

Mikolo
(2023)

we believed the impossible!
Congratulations to Niyi and his team for indeed 'believing the impossible' by making Nollywood's first animated feature film👏

Mikolo was a blast, we were transported into a fun and adventurous universe

DELICIOUS

-That opening scene was catchy. Right away, we were taken into Irumole forest where we saw the mysterious creatures chasing a man, loved Babablu's rocky voiceover which enhanced the storytelling, and Habeeb's periodic interruptions😆

-Casting was perfect! Pamilerin Ayodeji really looked like Mofiyinfoluwa Asenuga. Yvonne Jegede looked like Pamilerin and Ayo Mogaji

Everyone delivered a convincing performance. We were blown away by the siblings' chemistry.

-No criticism of the animation: characters were adequately designed, the visuals were enchanting and fueled our interest. The dynamic movements of the creatures were engaging😃

-The costume, make-up, and set designers have to be applauded! What a refined work executed

-The film elevated the Nigerian culture and reinforced civic manners in children. The location choice being in Funke's grandma's village encouraged families to go back to their roots and discover its beauty

-It was so great that Mikolo was given a personality of its own; it was friendly, always hungry, liked to dance, and very spontaneous. Mikolo meaning 'social person, great companion' was also a message for all of us

-The overall message called us to live bravely, be adventurous, explore life. In this day and age, we're so restricted to our jobs and homes that we fail to enjoy the wealth that nature has to offer. Just live out loud!

BLAND

-Teeny weeny negative has to be the dark and plain cinematography as well as the dark color grading which didn't accentuate the fun and bubbly vibe of Mikolo.

Overall, job well done!!!

Archana 31 Not Out
(2022)

we're clapping for Akhil Anilkumar!
All we can say is that Akhil Anilkumar is a true fighter for women's freedom from societal pressures. We're clapping for you sir, you are one of a kind 👏🏾 The movie was mind-blowing, it started on a simple note, then took a different turn that marveled us

-Aishwarya Lekshmi was the commander-in-chief of the film; she led us on a journey.

Her facial expression was interesting, she wasn't the happy-happy girl but the pensive one who bottled lots of feelings to please everyone.

-The screenplay was loaded with a variety of characters atypical to a story of this genre: the old vs young neighbors always bickering, a party of old men prone to dance and be loud, and a peculiar uninvited silent guest

-The editing was well executed with entertaining illustrations using cricket commentary to explain Archana's failed marriage proposals. The part when Archana eventually lashed out in anger was fantastic🤣

-The best scene was the end when Archana summoned all the courage to finally express herself and celebrate the 'uncelebratable', an example for many girls today!

-We need to also clap for the supporting cast as they did an amazing job 'supporting' Archana! They brought laughter, entertainment, and kept the story going

-Joyal Joji, the cinematographer, you are a gem, sir!!!

Randu
(2022)

pleasant and rich!
Always a joy to see Vishnu Unnikrishnan take the lead role😃 Randu was pleasant and rich in every department; it revealed the atrocities of mankind with showers of humor

-The opening scene was definitely catchy: Loved the attention to detail with the capture of the pigeons and the movie title appearing above the mosque with the glaring flashlights.

Binulal Unni didn't give us a cliche story about religious clashes, instead, he dived into the personal feelings of the common people victims of these atrocities.

As the proverb goes "when two elephants fight, the grass suffers", and in Randu, we saw how much average citizens suffer while the religious instigators go about their agendas. The storytelling was so relatable

-The color grading brought out a beautiful contrast between scenes and gave a nice finishing look to the images

-You could tell the editor did his part with extreme care; each scene transitioned seamlessly making the story believable

-The director invited us to experience every character's emotions: embarrassment, humor, and pain.

-You cannot criticize the acting, from the lead characters, supporting cast, even to the extras, a marvelous performance was rendered

-Dialogues were very profound and sound design was meticulously executed

Bravo!

Night Drive
(2022)

no stone left unturned
Night Drive was indeed a drive of entertainment, thrill, suspense, and excitement. No stone was left unturned. Twists everywhere, there is no way to hate this movie!

-Let's dive right into the magnitude of the script, Night Drive was packed with so many layers. Absolutely no way to tell how the movie was gonna to end.

Even though the screenplay had many turns, we understood where it was going.

Every character was originally designed.

-The fight choreographer gave us some bold and exhilarating moves, we were wowed🤓

-No criticism on the color grading and directing style, hats off!

-Do we really need to spend time talking about the performance when we have Anna Ben, Roshan Mathew, Kalabhavan Shajohn in a film?😃

-Watching Night Drive will undoubtedly spur you to courageously rise for justice in a corrupted world and be each other's keeper in these times when people have become self-centered...

Sunny
(2021)

we fell in love with Sunny
A one-man show that brings out moving lessons about life, humanity, and relationships. We fell in love with Sunny!

DELICIOUS

-The opening scene was quite catchy, we had the sensation of being present with Sunny in the airplane, riding with him in the taxi, and entering the hotel.

Many have written scripts about the pandemic and its effects, however, 'Sunny' took a different turn by concentrating on loneliness and silence.

There were many symbols (e.g. The omnipresent phone and the men in the boat) that provided a greater understanding of the story.

The focus wasn't on stressing the gravity of the pandemic, but on looking into the life of a single character who was a reflection of humanity through his selfishness, anger, depression, aimlessness, fear, rudeness, fragility, etc.

What a paradox that Sunny's life wasn't sunny at all but rather filled with gloom and darkness🤔

-The deliberate choice of camera shots and angles was superb, especially the face of Sunny's neighbor which could never be entirely seen, bringing a mysterious dimension to the screenplay

-Nothing to say about the lighting, good job 👏🏾

-Beautiful work on the score, nice subtle melody that effortlessly melted with the narration

-We love Jayasurya and always will; his acting is purely effortless and top-notch😃

-The sound design team should be proud of themselves!

BLAND

Minor negatives

-Not quite sure how the particular hotel selection fitted into the story. It became a bit distracting that Sunny was showing off all the room's features as if he were in an ad

-The dialogues were a bit plain compared to the magnitude of the movie.

Operation Java
(2021)

thank you for making this movie!
Operation Java was an assortment of brilliant storytelling, cinematography, editing, acting, casting, sound design, and directing😍

It was so relatable to see young graduates hustling to be employed in today's economy, thank you for making this movie!

-A splendid work done on the cinematography. Faiz Siddik is a weapon to watch out for!

Outstanding job with the angles and ingenious attention to detail, every frame was a calculated move. The cinematography could even tell the story without dialogues

-Lots of lessons learned mainly in terms of cybercrime: the dos and don'ts, modi operandi, etc. It was as if we were in a class being educated on the digital world.

Strong dialogues about work ethics. We discovered a lot as the storyline conveyed great messages on perseverance, humility, and goal orientation. Honestly, we were touched

-Tharun Moorthy smoothly told three unrelated stories with the engineering students and cyber cell police as the recurring characters. The transition from one story to another was seamless. The suspense was on

-The interaction between Balu Varghese and Lukman Avaran was excellent; their camaraderie deepened the emotions of the story. We really felt their hustle, sadness, happiness, and hard work

-Color grading and editing were cautiously executed; the crew understood what they were doing. Well done

-Sound design accentuated the feel of each scene, carrying us with the story.

Nayattu
(2021)

such a delight!
Nayattu was highly anticipated and we were sooo delighted that it delivered! A fresh script coupled with lots of suspense, superior acting, and photography

-The film was innovatively crafted; we usually see the police playing heroes or villains, but in Nayattu, they were being chased! It was quite good to see their frailty and helplessness as they're also humans 😀

-Storytelling flowed very smoothly. Important messages questioning the system were spread through symbols and song lyrics.

Nayattu was a good illustration of the uncertainties of life: in this case, we saw how even policemen can become enemies of the state overnight

-Shyju Khalid must have a doctorate in cinematography because the attention he has for the littlest details is simply impeccable😍

-No need to waste time commenting on acting: the cast was just outstanding

-The editors Mahesh Narayanan and Rajesh Rajendran deserve applause 👏🏾

-Powerful ending.

Meezan
(2021)

our eyes swelled from over-weeping
We absolutely hate crying when watching movies, but there was no way to keep a firm face with Meezan.

Our eyes swelled from over-weeping... Meezan was a sweet and simple story loaded with a deep message on friendship

DELICIOUS

-The film was truly unique as it portrayed the extent of friendships. The screenwriter evoked a lot of themes such as loyalty, bitterness, melancholy, selflessness, and happiness.

He pushed us to question many things about friendships, e.g. How far are we willing to be committed for the sake of friendship? What would we do if a friend became seriously ill?

-At first glance, acting appeared average. It was only after a few minutes we understood that the characters were reflecting their monotonous environment.

Jabbar Chemmad melted our hearts with his striking rendition of an ill person, he was just hmmm...

The chemistry between the two friends was very inspiring, pure, and gentle

-The pale color grading worked in unison with the story's atmosphere, and the costume and make-up teams precisely enhanced each character

BLAND

-There were a few moments where the score was a little overpowering...

Kuruthi
(2021)

a blast in every aspect
There are movies you know are going to be great from the very first scene and that was the case with Kuruthi. No boring moment at all, it was a blast in every aspect

DELICIOUS

-Where to even begin? Many congratulations to Manu Warrier & team.

You can tell a great amount of hard work took place before, during, and after production to deliver such an outstanding quality. Brilliant climax, every scene kept us glued to our screens as we didn't know what to anticipate.

The film evoked fear, anger, extreme violence, helplessness, and courage under fire

-Storytelling was very fluid with striking dialogues. Kuruthi raised some significant points concerning religious intolerance and questioned the perpetual hatred that exists among humans since the beginning of creation.

-The editor accurately captured the spirit of the story; loved the orange color palette bringing out that hatred energy circulating in the air

-The dir. Of photography knew how to seize every moment of the movie, the lighting, framing, camera motion/angle, focus, etc. Great job on the match-cut transitions

-Prithviraj really outdid himself. First time seeing Naslen Gafoor and he blew us away with a remarkable performance.

The rest of the cast was simply 🔥🔥🔥

-A round of applause for the engaging visual effects and fight choreography

BLAND

-Just a minor note on the lack of realism of some events. A man who was burnt with acid fully recovered from the pain within hours😳 Ibrahim also got terribly injured on his hand, yet walked around like he had no pain...

Joji
(2021)

far better than Macbeth
Joji was far better than Macbeth😃 It had a different flair and the concept was turned more ominous being shot during pandemic times

DELICIOUS

-What hit us at first sight of the opening scenes was the color grading. The all-around pale green set a mystic mood symbolizing envy, money (or in this case, greed), and deadness

-The set and costume designers worked in great collaboration to reflect the greenish-blue color in the decor and outfits

-In a single movie we had Baburaj, Unnimaya Prasad, Fahadh Faasil, and Basil Joseph...that was enjoyment right there😃

Other unfamiliar faces like Alister Alex, Sunny PN, and Joji Mundakayam delivered a wonderful performance.

The exquisite acting took Joji to another level with the awkward looks and mannerisms

-The score played a big role in making us feel very uneasy

-Shyju Khalid: no criticism

-Can we clap for the editor, please?

-What made the film even more appealing than Macbeth was the plantation location and pandemic environment which underlined the themes of isolation, silence, and deadness in the emotional and spiritual senses. The writer really delved into the conniving nature of every character.

Godha
(2017)

simply superb!!
Simply superb! Currently writing this review with a big smile because Godha brought so much happiness😊 From start to finish, everything was carefully and beautifully executed!

-What struck us with Godha was the no-nonsense romance. The story was pure and the emotions real.

Wamiqa Gabbi was a fighter emotionally, physically, and spiritually. She was an example for women to rise up and fight for what they want without being tied down by tradition.

-Godha was also entertaining, we laughed till we couldn't breathe 🤣 All the actors gave 200% and Tovino Thomas was...don't even know how to describe him...He captured the essence of his goofy and irresponsible character, flawless

-The editor did a great job to insert some funny animations to keep the storyline appealing

-THANK YOU Rakesh Mantodi for writing such a unique screenplay

-Basil Joseph blew us away with a fine storytelling that was precise, straight to the point, and intentionally sending out crucial lessons. We were mesmerized.

Vettah
(2016)

this is what a sizzling thriller should look like
Vettah is an example of what a sizzling thriller should look like! A quiet suspenseful movie that makes your brain think, think, and think

DELICIOUS

-Much appreciation to the costume and make-up designers as the actors looked very put together😃

-Anishlal R S, the cinematographer, what a gem you are👏

-No way to predict Vettah's scenario. The story was sophistically written, we were scratching our heads trying IN VAIN to figure out things on our own.

Many thanks to the late Rajesh Pillai, who despite the intricacy, still made it very easy for viewers to follow and understand the plot

-What set Vettah apart was the game it played with our minds through the dialogues, so we became manipulated along with the investigators.

-Color grading and overall editing were well executed

BLAND

-A few special effects moments were a little non-credible while the score was a bit loud and overwhelming at times.

But this can be overlooked afterall.

James and Alice
(2016)

so much delight!
James & Alice brought so much delight😃 the film addressed a relatable couple's problems and provided concrete solutions, and the inclusion of a spiritual aspect made it unique

DELICIOUS

-A fantastic job on the soundtracks powered by soothing voices that blended with each scene

-Any couple can identify with James and Alice, especially in today's society where work, bills, achievements, and high standards put pressure on the family

-Some reviews criticized the post-climax scenes for dragging the story, however, they were crucial to understand the morals addressed.

The film could have contained a typical chain of events but more than entertaining the audience, the writer wanted to illustrate the solutions to the couple's problems. Not often are stories told in this manner

-Sujith Vaassudev must love the camera for sure! The versatile angle choices were just insanely great, the camera movement added another dimension to the storytelling, lighting was on point. Simply well done😍

-A round of applause to the editor for the seamless transitions between shots and powerful effects that complemented the score.

Having the climax scene in slow motion accentuated the gravity of the 'incident' and called us to reflect

-Well done on the dubbing

BLAND

-Teeny weeny negative was the 'heavenly' songs post-climax that were a bit loud and ever-present.
