Black Mirror
(2011)

Refreshing. A Black Mirror Indeed
Fantastic. Thought provoking. Seed Planting. Concept exploring and not trying to answer questions though questions are placed well enough that you can decide for yourself.

Each episode is a different "world" or set of characters. Mostly set in a world very much like ours now. Entertaining in a way, but better than that. Stimulating. You can try to guess where the stories going and all that but you're just missing the point and perhaps denying, that this is a mirror, showing back at us what we know is moments away if not here now.

I have long felt that we often attack new technologies, phones, internet realms etc, pointing out the undesirable behaviours surrounding them, but really the only problem there is that we aren't equipped to handle these immense powers/tools. Physical/mental evolution has been shocked by the unimaginable parabola of technological power we all have, even the poor, and the speed and leaps of imagination are only going to get crazier. Soon, we could create new nations/planets with each generation. Not that we should. So far, we're already confronted with these challenges and our society as a planet is paying for the incongruity of what is possible and our old structure, the one we know. Understandable.

So, Black Mirror, highlights the weakness we deal with when confronted with our great power. The addictive and often extremely disheartening behaviours and inhumane reactions we have to this new world.

Most episodes could have been made into movies. Not that they should have but could have which shows value. These 45 minute tales are tidy and well developed. If you like one you're likely to like them all just not all the same way. Some the episodes are actually worth returning to as soon as your done. I won't say which. A number of episodes, I watched online, I immediately returned to a few key moments in the story after seeing the end of the episode. One of them I just went straight back to the beginning. Good stuff. The USA needs more stuff willing to go there but we're so sensitive, fearful of saying the wrong thing, judgemental and crippled by originally well intentioned etiquette (or P.C. culture or whatever). I suppose we're not the only ones cause those very things are covered a bit in Black Mirror as well.

Sicario
(2015)

Great. Del Toro is worth it alone.
Really good movie. Benecio Del Toro is fantastic. Very laconic. A well written and played character. Emily Blunt's character is fairly typical but serves the story and her performance is great. Brolin is very good, character also a little typical but not necessarily predictable. He seems relaxed in his performance. He's been on a role, and being well cast since the Coen brothers put him in No Country for Old Men. Well, what I've seen of him.

Great pacing. No drag. Good to great action that doesn't feel gratuitous. Great, believable sets, and settings. The action doesn't get too visually crowded which is hard to find. It's patiently displayed and deliberate.

I'd watch this again. I've currently seen it once.

Lynch
(2007)

Very "Lynchian" documentary
Just watched this doc and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Do not come looking for explanations of his films, or his formula. Lynch is not likely to ever show that. Partly, in my opinion, because he couldn't if he tried.

This is what you'll get. You hang out with Lynch and some of his closer crew, for a while. That's it. He tells stories. He talks about creativity. You watch him get and execute ideas. He interacts with his crew and the actors. you get to see him in a bunch of locations. Not only working on the film they are making (Inland Empire), in fact little of it is on set. You get to see and hear him talk about photography and creativity in all forms, of all mediums.

He briefly discusses his relationship with meditation which he has practiced for 30+ years. Watching him at work, seeing the way he is, totally destroys the image/stereotype of meditators being yoga masters, always calm and always sitting in the lotus position or something. No. This guy is out there. He is himself, and very alive. He is calm, and he is excited, He is frustrated, and loving. He is compassionate, and blunt.

So, unconventional, almost free form (but feels whole in the end). I guess, kinda like a lot of his films... Actually, by the end I was thinking to myself, "Aww schucks, I wanna hang out some more with you David."

The Town
(2010)

Good 2010 action/heist movie
A well done action heist film. Kind of reminded me of Heat though is not of the same caliber or as "deep" (if my memory serves me well).

Renner is scary in his role. One of those performances that gets you tense for what he might do at any moment. Affleck plays a very stoic criminal mind. I got a kick out of the business place of the "boss".

If you want to see a movie with complex heists, and typical but good tough guy performances this should do well for you. Not the most original but entertaining and well done. How many movies really are original? Very few. The differences are in the little pockets within the movie where they do things you've seen before but you still enjoy watching how they get there.

Definitely renews my interest in Ben Affleck outside of comedy. I just remembered he did Gone Baby Gone. That was impressive too. Maybe I need to catch up...

Changeling
(2008)

A Story of Righteousness
Good movie. Nice layers unfolding regarding the missing boy. If it wasn't a true story one might deny it's plausibility. Very good performances. The supporting actors were truly enriching for the film. Surprisingly good acting from children. Many moments where I wanted to punch out one or two characters on the screen for being such puppets, and if/when they did get what they had coming, I had to exclaim my satisfaction out loud.

Made me think about how much denial of the obvious truth we all allow and are sometimes complicit in via our silence. Great examples of how sometimes people will do the most dishonest and unthinkable things, just because they are caught up in a machine, a bureaucracy, and go too far before they realize what they have really done. Great examples of how easy it is to be fooled by voices of authority, because if we can't believe them, then who do we believe?

Though I would have wanted it to be a touch shorter everything seemed necessary. Maybe it was just me on this particular day.

Every Eastwood directed film I've seen has such class and calm confidence, I truly enjoy his work. Once again, a great story of righteousness. You may as well stand up for what you believe in if the alternative is a life hardly worth living.
