Anyone who has slipped into a Vr headset can attest to the visceral nature of the medium and it doesn't take long to jump to the idea that this is going to be an incredible platform for horror. Leading the charge on that since 2015 (aka, the entire recent history of Vr) is Guy Shelmerdine and his company Dark Corner. They created the landmark wheelchair-bound Vr experience Catatonic and its coffin-dwelling follow-up Mule. Now Shelmerdine is back with his third Vr experience, Night Night, set to world premiere tomorrow at Nyff. But apparently one new horrifying Vr experience isn't enough for Shelmerdine. Along with Night Night comes the launch of Dark Corner's own genre-specific Vr platform, the first of its kind in the genre space....

The sixth edition of the annual program announces its full slate today, including three Vr horror experiences from Dark Corner Studios, a Vr documentary series exploring the lives of Pakistani citizens from Academy Award-winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and a game about sci-fi hallucinations from Tender Claws. In late April, genre fans crowded into the Timberline Lodge in Mt. Hood, Ore., for a new horror film festival, but they didn’t spend the whole weekend watching movies. Instead, the newly founded Overlook Film Festival used its contained setting to showcase an emerging creative field that may point the way to the future of entertainment: the immersive experience.

“The value of showcasing immersive storytelling at film festivals, to me, is that it can only stand to add texture and flavor to the overall programming,” said Dylan Reiff, co-founder of Bottleneck Immersive. The gaming company, which presented an escape room at Fantastic Fest in Austin last fall, invited Overlook participants to opt in to an immersive horror game. “It adds this underbelly of energy that permeates the space.”

The newly formed Overlook Film Festival has announced it inaugural year programming lineup, including 37 films (20 features and 17 short films from 16 countries), along with a bevy of location-appropriate genre-themed parties, interactive events, and live experiences. This year, the festival will also fete director Roger Corman with their Master of Horror Award. The award “was established to honor a living legend who has contributed lasting innovations to the genre throughout a long career, inspiring new filmmakers for years to come.”

The fest is styled a 4-day celebration of horror that runs from April 24 – 30 at the historic Timberline Lodge located in Mt. Hood, Oregon, featured in Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” as the location of the infamous Overlook Hotel. The new festival comes from some of the same minds behind the now-defunct Stanley Film Festival, a similar horror-themed gathering based in a hotel in Estes Park, Colorado that inspired Stephen King to write his 1977 “Shining” novel.

Beyond Fest must have their check in the mail, because ol' Jack Burton himself is coming to the festival for a 30th anniversary screening of Big Trouble in Little China. Filmmaker James Gunn will be on hand to discuss the cult John Carpenter movie with the beloved actor, and that's only one of many events fans will want to mark on their fall calendars.

Taking place September 30th–October 11th at the Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles, Beyond Fest 2016 will also feature screenings of Phantasm: Ravager, Phantasm: Remastered, George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead in 3-D, Martin, In a Valley of Violence, The Wolf Man (1941), The Bad Batch, Raw, and City of the Living Dead.

A 4K restoration screening of Romero's The Crazies will also take place, as well as a live performance by composer Fabio Frizzi and his orchestra during a showing of The Beyond: Composer's Cut.

Although it may be hard to believe, summer is picking up speed and heading towards fall and the beginning of Fantastic Fest, taking place September 22nd–29th in Austin, Texas. The first wave of programming for the always entertaining festival has been revealed, and horror fans already have one big event to look forward to, as Don Coscarelli, David Hartman, and several original Phantasm cast members will be on hand for the world premiere of Phantasm: Ravager, along with a special showing of Phantasm: Remastered.
