This is one of four movies being filmed on Hawaiian history. The filmmakers will also shoot "Queen Lili'u" in 2018, "King Kamehameha" in 2019, and "Captain Cook" in 2020.
Over 800 Native Hawaiians auditioned in Hawaii; over 13,000 actors submitted in Los Angeles and New York City.
The co-writer of "The Islands" is Native Hawaiian, teaches Native Hawaiian history at the University of Hawaii, and has a PhD from Harvard.
