According to writer/director Scott Christian Sava, when he originally wrote the screenplay for Animal Crackers, he had never intended to go too in deep about Owen's parents. However, when he added a subplot involving Bob and Horatio, both established to be uncles for Owen, he realized only after entering production that it would raise questions regarding who Owen's parents might be. Sava has since said in the case a sequel for Animal Crackers gets greenlit, he would introduce Owen's father in the story.
