The guardian for Wendy Williams has filed an amended lawsuit against A+E Networks and eOne over the Lifetime documentary reality project Where Is Wendy Williams? that aired in February, claiming that the TV personality was exploited in her participation and paid just $82,000 for the project.
The guardian, Sabrina Morrissey, also claimed that Williams’ signature on her contract with eOne to produce the series “does not appear to be genuine” and there is “no evidence” that she signed the agreement on January 25, 2023.
Williams, the lawsuit stated, “was incapacitated and unable to consent at the time the Contract or its amendments were executed, even if she had signed it (which she did not).”
Her representatives disclosed earlier this year that she has been diagnosed with primary progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia. Williams had participated in the documentary and served as executive producer.

Wendy Williams’ guardian has filed an amended complaint over Lifetime’s Where Is Wendy Williams? doc, claiming the two-part series was made “without a valid contract” while Williams was “highly vulnerable and clearly incapable of consenting to being filmed, much less humiliated and exploited.”
It accuses the defendants — which include Lifetime and its parent company, A&e Network — of “willfully taking advantage of a severely impaired, incapacitated person” and making “millions” from the docuseries. Meanwhile, the suit claims Williams “received a paltry $82,000.”

During the #MeToo movement in 2017, Brie Miranda Bryant and her team at A+E Networks were tasked with making an hour-long roundtable documentary special about the awareness campaign.
As senior VP of Lifetime original programming, Bryant was told to make sure that the doc “echoed after the hour was done.”
“It was such a conundrum,” she says now. “I just thought… how?” So she called former Bunim-Murray Prods. CEO Gil Goldschein and asked him to pitch her a doc he thought she would never buy. That pitch turned out to be “Surviving R. Kelly.” The roundtable was canceled.
“Surviving R. Kelly,” which aired in January 2019, put Kelly’s victims on camera to detail the sexual abuse they claimed they endured at the hands of the singer. The original six-hour docuseries went on to win a Peabody and, ultimately, led to Kelly’s 30-year prison sentence.

The person sitting on a bed and being interviewed for a documentary is clearly in distress, tears welling.
“Can we take a break for a second?” Delaney Colaio, 18, asks the co-directors of We Go Higher, a documentary about the life experiences of “9/11 Kids,” people with parents murdered in the 2001 terrorist attacks.
Someone offers water, but no break is given to Colaio. The directors, the award-winning Sara Hirsh Bordo and her frequent collaborator Michael Campo, resume firing questions about self-harm, Colaio’s relationship with his mother, and about his father, killed when Colaio was a toddler. During the two-hour-plus session, filmed in August 2017, and the three-hour session the night before, Bordo and Campo also grill Colaio on why he doesn’t want to see the terrorists face the death penalty. The Lifetime docuseries “Where Is Wendy Williams?” was originally supposed to be a chronicle of the popular talk show host’s return to the A-list after numerous personal struggles and health crises. But as executive producer Mark Ford tells Gold Derby, the final product was much different. “I think it’s safe to say that no one who joined the team on this project expected it to be the project that it turned out to be,” declares Ford.

Nicole Brown Simpson will be getting the docuseries treatment at Lifetime.
The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Brown Simpson — who was famously found murdered in 1994 outside her Brentwood condominium, along with her friend Ronald Goldman, and whose late ex-husband, O.J. News of the doc comes after the announcement that O.J. Simpson died one day prior at age 76 from cancer. A+E Networks fought for the docuseries called Where Is Wendy Williams? to air and they cited Britney Spears’ conservatorship as a good reason why it should. When Sabrina Morrissey, the guardian of the former talk show host tried to prevent Lifetime from airing it, she lost, and it premiered as planned. In fact, the ratings from the show that aired on February 24 and 25 were excellent.

Newly unsealed documents shed light on A+E Networks’ successful appeal of a last-minute effort to halt the airing of the Lifetime documentary Where Is Wendy Williams? last month.
A temporary guardian, Sabrina Morrissey, had sought a court order to stop the project, arguing in a lawsuit filed last month that the documentary was a “blatant exploitation of a vulnerable woman with a serious medical condition,” and that the talk host had lacked mental capacity to enter a contract to do the show.
A New York judge initially granted the order to prevent the airing of Where Is Wendy Williams?, but that was quickly reversed on appeal.
In arguing against a temporary restraining order to stop the project, A+E Networks’ attorney Rachel Strom wrote that Morrissey’s effort was an unconstitutional prior restraint, and on a topic that was in the public interest.

Wendy Williams’ court-appointed guardian tried to block the release of a Lifetime docuseries about the talk show host, telling a court last month that she was “horrified” by the depiction of Williams as a “drunkard” and a “laughingstock.”
The guardian, Sabrina Morrissey, obtained a temporary restraining order to keep the two-part series, entitled “Where is Wendy Williams?”, under wraps.
But A+E Networks, the parent company of Lifetime, and Entertainment One were quickly able to get that order overturned on Feb. 23, with an appellate judge ruling it an “impermissible prior restraint on speech” under the First Amendment. The show aired over the following weekend.
The battle between the guardian and the network has been reported previously. But more details became available Thursday, when a New York judge ordered most of the court record in the case unsealed.

The Bad Guardian will star Melissa Joan Hart (Sabrina the Teenage Witch) and La La Anthony (La La’s Full Court Life) and “is inspired by countless true stories of individuals who have been put in the care of a guardian by the courts and raises the question — are these caretakers helpful or harmful?”
The official (and a bit spoiler-filled) description: The Bad Guardian is “about one woman’s fight to save her father from the clutches of a corrupt and greedy court-appointed guardian. When Leigh’s (Melissa Joan Hart) father Jason (Eric Pierpoint) suffers a fall while she’s out of town, the courts assign Jason a guardian,...

Lifetime’s controversial Where Is Wendy Williams? documentary proved to be a big draw for the cable network.
The 4 1/2-hour documentary, which aired over two nights on Feb. 24 and 25, averaged 1.04 million same-day viewers, according to Nielsen. That’s more than triple the average primetime audience for Lifetime in the previous three weeks, which hovered a little above 300,000 viewers.
After three days of delayed viewing, the documentary grew to 1.2 million viewers, which Lifetime says is its biggest nonfiction debut since its Janet Jackson documentary two years ago.
Where Is Wendy Williams? also brought in more viewers than Lifetime’s January docuseries The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard, which averaged 887,000 viewers over its six hours. Lifetime cited a three-day average of 1.1 million viewers for the latter show, a 24 percent lift from delayed viewing. (Nielsen ratings figures don’t include streaming.)

In the first episode of the four-part documentary, Where is Wendy Williams?, which aired on Lifetime Feb. 24 and 25, the former daytime talk show host makes a haunting observation about the state of her financial affairs.
“I have no money and I’m going to tell you something,” Wendy Williams states to the cameras, “if it happens to me, it could happen to you.”
According to journalist Diane Dimond, author of We’re Here to Help: When Guardianship Goes Wrong, who’s featured in the documentary, Williams is right. “It’s not just Wendy Williams and Britney Spears, there are 2 million people in guardianship or conservatorship right now in this country,” Dimond tells THR. “In the justice system, if somebody says you’re at risk and vulnerable and need protection, the court says, ‘Ok.’ There’s no due process in these courtrooms.”

The Wendy Williams Show‘s co-executive producer is reflecting on working with her former talk show host following the news of her diagnosis being made public. Suzanne Bass says there were early signs pointing to what has now been publicly revealed to be primary progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia diagnosis (Ftd).
“You can go back and see the show, and there’s really long periods of quietness where she’s not speaking,” Bass told People, two days after a press release was sent out, claiming to be from her care team, announcing Williams’ diagnosis, which impacts language, communication behavior and cognitive function. “And you’re thinking, ‘What’s happening?’ There were early signs [of something wrong] where you’re grasping for words, having a hard time collecting your thoughts and remembering things. Maybe that’s what was happening back then.”

“At a certain point,” says Where Is Wendy Williams? producer Mark Ford, “we were more worried about what would happen if we stopped filming than if we continued.”
So, for the better part of a year, his cameras kept rolling, documenting the increasingly fragile state that the former talk show host had found herself in, as she alternately craved family, her former TV platform and an excessive amount of alcohol, all while struggling to remain coherent. What ultimately came of that footage is a raw, devastating, four-plus hour documentary, which aired on Lifetime over two nights last weekend. Williams, her son, Kevin Hunter Jr., and her jeweler-turned-manager, William Selby, are all credited as executive producers.
Nevertheless, the eOne and Creature Films project asks more questions than it answers, including what, exactly, was going on with Williams, and why a court-ordered guardian has largely cut her off from her family. Though...

Less than 72 hours before the premiere of Lifetime’s two-part docuseries “Where Is Wendy Williams?,” the former talk show host’s team announced that she has been diagnosed with primary progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia (Ftd), the same disease that Bruce Willis has. Two days before a major documentary chronicling Wendy Williams’ deteriorating mental state is scheduled to premiere on Lifetime, the beleaguered former talk show host’s court-appointed caregiver filed a lawsuit against Lifetime parent company A+E Networks.

On Friday, Appellate Justice Peter H. Moulton vacated a temporary restraining order signed ex parte, ruling that such an order would be “impermissible prior...
