Anastasia "Ana" Steele (Dakota Johnson), a naïve English Literature student at Washington State University in Vancouver, becomes enamored with self-made billionaire Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) and he with her after she interviews him at the request of her roommate, journalism student Kate Kavanagh (Eloise Mumford), who has the flu. When Ana learns that Christian is a sadist and will only enter into a relationship with her if she agrees to be his submissive, she has a tough decision to make.
Fifty Shades of Grey is a 2011 novel by English author E.L. James (pseudonym for Erika Mitchell). The novel was adapted for the movie by British screenwriter Kelly Marcel. The film was followed by Fifty Shades Darker (2017) and Fifty Shades Freed (2018).
There are some extensions/additional moments during the sexual scenes, but it is rather improbable that any viewer really notices them. This way, the unrated version both fulfills and disappoints the expectations viewers will have when watching it. Almost all of the sex scenes have additions which are typical for the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).
After visiting her mother in Georgia, Ana returns to Seattle and goes directly to Christian's office. He orders her to meet him in the play room in 15 minutes. At first, he is gentle. After tying her arms and legs to the bed, he caresses her body with feathers and flogs her lightly, but Ana can tell that he's angry. Later, she asks him if he's angry because she has yet to sign the contract, but he denies it. She asks why he wants to punish her, and he explains that he needs to because he is "fifty shades of fucked up." She challenges him to show her just how he wants to punish her so that she can understand how bad it could be. Christian takes Ana into the playroom, strips her, and orders her to bend over. He then whips her six times with a leather belt, forcing her to count out each blow. When Christian goes to help her up, Ana refuses his touch and retires to her bedroom to cry. Realizing that she loves him but cannot be what he wants, Ana prepares to leave. She asks for her VW Beetle back. Christian admits that he's already sold it but agrees to send her a check. As Ana heads out to the elevator, Christian follows. As the elevator doors close, Christian calls out to her, "Ana..." She replies, "Christian," and the doors slam shut.
