The King of Bohemia is all set to marry a daughter of the King of Scandinavia. To prevent this marriage from potentially being called off, he wants Sherlock Holmes to recover a photograph that shows the King in a compromising position with the captivating opera singer, Irene Adler.

Violet Hunter accepts a high-paying governess's job subject to a number of unusual conditions. After a number of strange occurrences, including the discovery of a sealed-off wing of the house, Hunter alerts Holmes, who, along with Watson, find the wing empty and are accused of helping the employer's daughter escape.
