The build team could have saved themselves a lot of time and effort if they'd watched Tri-Borough (2005) which is possibly what inspired the myth. The CSIs explain how blue ice is formed, and why it breaks off and becomes a missile, all the build team would have had to test was the amount of real life damage a chunk of blue ice could cause if it hit someone or something.

Goofs
When the build team test what kind of damage blue ice could do they used a solid block of ice. However, as they showed, blue ice is made of millions of tiny droplets of a chemical cocktail, lowering the melting point and making the lump lighter and less dense than the ice used in the test.
