Lady Gaga has unleashed “Disease,” the lead single from her forthcoming seventh studio album, due out early next year. The song is the artist’s first solo single since 2022’s “Hold My Hand,” and comes just one month after Harlequin, the companion album to Joker: Folie à Deux, quietly came and went amid the film’s tepid performance at the box office.
Just in time for Halloween, “Disease” finds Gaga falling back on some of the tricks from her early heyday—namely the macabre imagery and brash Edm stylings of 2009’s The Fame Monster and 2011’s Born This Way. Produced by Gaga, Cirkut, and Andrew Watt, the track is driven by a heavy industrial beat and squelchy bassline with enough heft to support Gaga’s characteristically bombastic performance.
The song’s lyrics rely heavily on cliché, echoing similar themes as “Bad Romance” and “The Cure”: “Screamin’ for me, baby...

On the eve of “Joker: Folie à Deux” opening in theaters on Friday, October 4, awards pundits everywhere are wondering about the film’s chances at upcoming kudos like the Oscars and Golden Globes. One of its strongest contenders is Lady Gaga, whose manipulative character Harleen “Lee” Quinzel sings and dances her way into Arthur “Joker” Fleck’s (Joaquin Phoenix) heart. Even though critics are divided over the sequel, there’s good news for Gaga: Gold Derby’s Golden Globe predictions have her reaping a bid for Best Supporting Actress.
As of this writing, Gaga enjoys odds of 13/1, which places her in the Top 6 for the category. Her closest competitors are currently Zoe Saldana (“Emilia Perez”) at 37/10 odds, Danielle Deadwyler (“The Piano Lesson”) at 9/2 odds, Selena Gomez (“Emilia Perez”) at 13/2 odds, Felicity Jones (“The Brutalist”) at 13/2 odds, and Isabella Rossellini (“Conclave”) at 9/1 odds.

The invitation stated the event was going to be standing room only. “Think dance party while watching the film.”
And that’s exactly what it was. On Thursday night, Lady Gaga brought a dance party to Nya studios in Hollywood to mark the world premiere of her film “Gaga Chromatica Ball.”
The evening kicked off with a Q&a moderated by Access Hollywood’s Scott Evans. “This was such a special time. This tour went on during a time that people didn’t think that you could. The stadiums were packed all, they were sold out and [people were] all dressed up, dancing and singing,” said Gaga in front of an audience of about 400 guests that included “RuPaul’s Drag Race” stars Gottmik, Sasha Velour and Violet Chachki.

A ‘market with a view’ is how Nem Dubrovnik pitches itself. In a literal sense, the view is of the Adriatic Sea, but in a business sense, the ambition is to create a relaxed setting for execs to meet and do deals, a marked switch-up from the hubbub of many TV markets.
Launching in 2013, Nem Dubrovnik has carved out its calendar moment in June. Over a decade, it has established itself as a key buying and selling confab for the Cee region and beyond, with all of the notable buyers in attendance. The market organizers will grow the space for distributors by 40% this year.
Amazon MGM, Disney, Idtv and Lionsgate will have screenings or showcases. Beta Film, Newen Studios, Rai, and Warner Bros. Discovery are among the big European and international players that will be selling programming at Nem.
The Cee region remains a huge buyer of telenovelas and Turkish drama.

Many of Michael Jackson‘s posthumously released songs are available on streaming. Three were removed. One member of Jackson’s family questioned their authenticity.
La Toya Jackson said some Michael Jackson songs removed from streaming are fishy
Jackson’s musical legacy is still being felt after his death in major ways. Following his death, the King of Pop’s estate put out two albums of previously unreleased material: 2010’s Michael and 2014’s Xscape. Some of the songs from Michael turned heads due to allegations the vocalist singing them was not Jackson.
According to NPR, Jackson’s sister, La Toya, once sewed seeds of doubt. “I am shocked that things have gotten this far,” she tweeted. “This is ridiculous. I was at the studio when these questionable files were delivered. I heard these ‘so-called’ Michael Jackson songs raw and without the distraction of the well-produced music by Teddy Riley. Happy 38th birthday, Lady Gaga!
On Thursday, the pop icon celebrated her birthday by sharing a sweet car selfie — showing off her bleached hair and brows — on Instagram, and telling fans that she’s the happiest she’s ever been. Oh, and that she’s been working on some of her music, too.
“Today has been so special — I can’t remember a time I was so happy on my bday. I am in love with my best friend, my family and friends are loving and kind and healthy,” Gaga wrote.

Season 24 of “The Voice” ended Tuesday, December 20 with host Carson Daly announcing Huntley as the winner. The 33-year old gave coach Niall Horan his second victory, keeping him undefeated and making the “Slow Hands” singer just the third coach to win two seasons back-to-back (Blake Shelton won Seasons 2-5 and Kelly Clarkson‘s team took the top spot in Seasons 14 and 15). Watch our exclusive video interview with Huntley above.
“I know I’m 33 and Ruby is 16, but that girl can sing and she’s a super mega-talent,” Huntley says. “I did not once think that I was going to win this thing. As soon as my name got called I was definitely surprised. The father in me remembered Ruby was up there with me. I know what it’s like being that 16-year old kid with all that talent and it not going the way I want it to. I...

Rock music had its turn in the spotlight on this season of NBC’s The Voice, thanks in large part to contestant Huntley. The Virginia blues-rocker, who goes by one name, was crowned the winner of Season 24 on Tuesday night (December 19th) after performing a number of rock songs throughout the competition, including Creed’s “Higher” in the finale.
The 33-year-old father of two sang “Higher” on Monday during night one of the two-part finale, lending his powerful and soulful rasp to the monster Creed hit. The 1999 song is having a moment in 2023, having also been used as a rallying cry for World Series champions the Texas Rangers.

If “The Voice” had a Mount Rushmore of coaches, three of the faces carved into its granite would no doubt be Niall Horan, Blake Shelton and Kelly Clarkson. Why? Because as of the Season 24 finale on December 19, they are the only coaches to have won two seasons in a row. That’s quite an impressive feat, especially considering the immense amount of talent that has graced the NBC reality TV show since its debut in 2011. See the updated “The Voice” winners list.
Niall joined the esteemed list on Tuesday night when Huntley, his 33-year-old artist from Fredericksburg, Virginia, won Season 24 over runner-up Ruby Leigh of Team Reba McEntire. That gave Niall back-to-back victories because he also prevailed in Season 23 with Illinois pop singer Gina Miles, who bested runner-up Grace West of Team Blake. Since Niall isn’t returning in the spring for Season 25, that means he will remain undefeated for the time being.

Imagine the 96th Academy Awards ceremony opening with an epic “Barbie” musical medley.
According to Puck’s “What I’m Hearing” newsletter, The Academy wants it to happen. Who foots the bill on the production is another story. Typically the studios are responsible, but as Matthew Belloni writes, “Warners is selling off movies to raise money these days. By the time the Oscars arrive, marketing and awards budgets are spent, so who knows?”
But with three major songs vying for awards recognition — Dua Lipa’s disco pop ode “Dance the Night,” Ryan Gosling’s climactic centerpiece “I’m Just Ken” and Billie Eilish’s ballad “What Was I Made For?” — “Barbie” is the obvious pick for an extravagant Oscars musical number.
Director Greta Gerwig has been out campaigning for the three songs, which will all likely make the original song shortlist next next month, but only two songs from a given film can land nominations,...

Exclusive: S.S. Rajamouli is currently assembling a production team for a new movie about the birth and rise of Indian Cinema.
Rajamouli, whose Rrr racked up an Oscar win and over $166M WW, is not directing, we understand. At $130M, Rrr is the third highest grossing movie in Indian cinema. Rajamouli is ‘presenting’ which over in India is a bigger title than producer on a film, though akin to how Hollywood views the role of a producer.
The new biopic about Indian Cinema is not yet titled, though reps for Rajamouli promise it’s a “magnum opus telling” which will be told “on a huge scale and canvas.”
Rrr followed the fictitious telling of two legendary revolutionaries and their journey away from home before they started fighting for their country in the 1920s.
Rrr won an original song Oscar this past spring for its single “Naatu Naatu” written by M.M. Keeravani and Chandrabose.

“A lot of what we do as directors is just putting out fires,” said “Ted Lasso” director Declan Lowney. Whether those are unavoidable or self-made fires, the directors at Variety’s Creative Collaborations: Directors on Directors panel all agreed that their shows and films faced serious challenges — but that didn’t stop their projects from earning Emmy nominations.
Directors Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton of “Fleishman is in Trouble,” Peter Hoar of “The Last of Us,” Lowney of “Ted Lasso,” Glenn Weiss of “The Oscars” and Davis Guggenheim of “Still: A Michael J. The generational divide between Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga didn’t matter. The timeless crooner and pop superstar developed a friendship that transcended time, just like the best music tends to do. Bennett’s death at age 96 means we won’t see them team up again, but we’ll always have their two albums to listen to. Bennett and Gaga seemed like an unlikely duet, but their collaboration made for some memorable moments and Grammy success.

Lady Gaga is up to her usual Method acting tricks again, again, according to “Joker: Folie à Deux” cinematographer Lawrence Sher.
In a recent podcast interview circulated online, Sher said Lady Gaga’s assistant director asked that she be called “Lee” during the production, and that suddenly changed the dynamic of the set.
“I didn’t know Stefani at all,” he said, referring to the “Fame Monster” icon’s born name, “Stefani Germanotta.” “Strangely, I felt like I never even met her, even during the makeup/hair tests. Because again, maybe it was my philosophy of not trying to get in their space. And then I remember for a week, being like, god, I feel like we are disconnecting. Not even connecting. We are like on opposites. And I would say to my crew, ‘Jesus, I can’t, like, crack it. She either hates me or we hate each other.

“Rrr” ruled the awards season with its original composition “Naatu Naatu,” culminating in a victory for Best Original Song at the Oscars. But the film and the song were never recognized by the MTV Movie and TV Awards, opening the door for a music superstar to prevail. And there are a lot of superstars in the running for the Golden Popcorn for Best Song.

To date, singer and songwriter Lady Gaga has won 13 Grammys out of 36 nominations. And she achieved a rare feat of being nominated for Album of the Year for three consecutive years: for “The Fame” (2010), “The Fame Monster” (2011) and “Born This Way” (2012). She hasn’t won that top prize yet, though. She has also made a big impact at the MTV Video Music Awards, where “Bad Romance” won seven times in 2010 including Video of the Year; it’s the second most awarded video of all time, behind only Peter Gabriel‘s “Sledgehammer.”
She transitioned to acting too. That’s usually a risky venture for a musician, but it paid off for Gaga. In 2016 she won a Golden Globe for Best TV Movie/Limited Actress for “American Horror Story: Hotel.” But her biggest success was yet to come. The Elephant Whisperers producer Guneet Monga says ‘India’s moment was taken away from me’ at Oscars
The Elephant Whisperers producer Guneet Monga has opened up about being cut off before she could deliver her Oscars acceptance speech.
The 39-year-old producer, who won the Academy Award in the Best Documentary Short film category, was upset by the moment that also caused uproar among film fans.
Footage of the incident showed Monga holding an Oscar and waiting for director Kartiki Gonsalves to end her speech. However, as she approached the mic, the exit music began playing and both women were escorted off-stage.
The moment also caused controversy among fans, with many pointing out that Matthew Freud and Charlie Mackesy, who accepted The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse’s win for Best Animated Short, were given ample time to make their speeches after The Elephant Whisperers.
“There was a shock on my face,” Monga has now told Bombay Times.

Lady Gaga arrived at the 2023 Academy Awards in a silhouetted black Versace gown, but when she took the stage later in the night to perform her Best Original Song-nominated record “Hold My Hand,” she had swapped the dress for jeans and a t-shirt, with her makeup being wiped away, too. In a new TikTok video, the singer gave fans a glimpse into the lead-up to the performance, sharing “the rehearsal no one saw.”

On Sunday, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” appeared to be everything, everywhere, all at once. The film, of course, dominated the 95th Oscars with seven wins — including best picture. Virtually all the stars received wins, on what was truly a historic night.
And an emotional one. As the opening clips of this week’s Variety Awards Circuit Podcast illustrates, family was on the minds of this year’s winners. Listen to our Mega Roundtable edition, in which Clayton Davis, Jenelle Riley, Jazz Tangcay and myself recount the show and dissect the winners — from Jimmy Kimmel’s excellent monologue to how every single category panned out:
Big wins from the likes of Ke Huy Quan, Jamie Lee Curtis, Brendan Fraser and Michelle Yeoh meant many tears were shed — sure, on stage, but also in the audience.
Funny I should mention SXSW, as its unlikely march to the big Oscar wins started...

Top Gun: Maverick soared at the global box office this summer — and the big-budget blockbuster is also flying high after winning an Oscar for best sound.
The Tom Cruise starrer also earned Academy Awards nominations for best picture, best adapted screenplay and best original song (for Lady Gaga and BloodPop’s “Hold My Hand”) in addition to two Golden Globes nods, including best motion picture in the drama category. (Despite his absence at the Oscars, Cruise still garnered plenty of attention at the ceremony.)
After raking in well over $1 billion worldwide, the Top Gun sequel landed on Paramount+ and Amazon-owned MGM+ (formerly Epix) last December. It’s also available to buy or rent on Amazon’s Prime Video, iTunes, Redbox, Vudu and other video-on-demand platforms.

No shenanigans as Academy went with experience and expertise.
In urgent need of a credibility reset after last year’s shenanigans the 95th Academy Awards delivered a reassuringly conventional, star-laden show that harkened back to days gone by yet at its heart seemed to offer a glimpse of generational shift.
Wisely, the Academy had opted for safe pairs of hands in executive producers Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss and show host Jimmy Kimmel, who made a grand entrance as he was lowered onto the stage in a harness and parachute after a video clip riff on Top Gun: Maverick showed...
