Despite being an NBA mega-star with the Golden State Warriors, Steph Curry is eager to show off his comedy chops in the trailer for Peacock’s Mr. Throwback, which was released on Wednesday.
Curry’s chance to play a comedy hero has come with the Universal Television mockumentary that marks his first scripted TV role and is set to premiere on Aug. 8.
Mr. Throwback
The comedy sees Adam Pally as Danny Grossman, a down-on-his-luck memorabilia dealer who looks for redemption by reuniting with his sixth-grade teammate, basketball legend Curry, who plays himself on screen.
In Mr. Throwback, Curry aims to help his middle school buddy get redemption. “Let’s do a documentary on it,” he says at one point in the trailer. That has the former school buddies joyously traveling on Curry’s private jet and sharing pre-game horse placenta drinks, called “placenta-ritas.”

When Stephen Curry decided to turn pro after a stellar college basketball career at tiny Davidson College in North Carolina, NBA scouts looked him over. They weren’t impressed.
“Far below NBA standard in regard to explosiveness and athleticism,” they scoffed. “Do not rely on him to run your team.”
Curry proved them all wrong, as shown thrillingly in the Apple Original Films documentary Stephen Curry: Underrated, directed by Peter Nicks and produced by an all-star roster including Nicks and Ryan Coogler.
“We discovered that scouting report, which basically did not see his potential,” Nicks explained during an appearance at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Documentary event. “And we also discovered sort of his inner mentality, which is very much a belief that he was, is, and always will be underrated despite everything that he’s achieved. SAG-AFTRA may still be on strike, but studios are, nevertheless, pushing their Oscar contenders to garner the adequate (and allowed) attention they need to land nominations.
One of the main methods is getting industry voters out to screenings and making films available on the Academy Screening Room and BAFTA screening platforms. With the two significant organizations banning physical DVD screeners, voting members rely on the respective digital viewing portals to catch up on some of this year’s contenders vying for awards consideration.
Read: Variety’s Awards Circuit for the latest Oscars predictions in all categories.
The Academy performs a heavy vetting process for each film that chooses to submit for consideration. Historically, over 300 movies are in the running for best picture consideration, with more films joining the fray over the next several months. Distributors are the ultimate decision-makers of when a movie is placed in the Academy Screening Room for viewing.

Whether or not Steph Curry is underrated is completely debatable. He’s won a wide selection of NBA accolades, including two Most Valuable Player awards, but there’s an argument to be made that his three-point shooting skills are so prolific that they haven’t been talked about enough in a historical context.

Stephen Curry is still feeling the glow of winning the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament last weekend.
He grabbed the title with an eagle putt on the 18th green on Sunday, but it’s a shot he made Saturday that continues to reverberate: a hole in one on the course’s par-3 no. 7. After draining the pitching wedge, he sprinted down the fairway in celebration at speeds not normally achieved by golfers unless they’re riding in a motorized cart.
“I had to show off a little bit of athleticism,” Curry tells Deadline. “I kind of blacked out, so I don’t even know where that top-end speed and going from zero to a hundred real quick came from. But that’s what happens when you don’t have any real preparation for thinking that hole in one was going to happen.”

Ryan Coogler and Peter Nicks met in 2012 when Coogler was making “Fruitville Station” and needed help securing access to a location. Nicks, who was finishing his first feature documentary, “The Waiting Room, came to the rescue. Nine years later, Cooglar hired Nicks to run the nonfiction arm of his production company Proximity Media, which has a five-year overall exclusive television deal with The Walt Disney Co.
The fruits of that partnership have been revealed this summer. Proximity’s first feature documentary, “Anthem,” which Nicks directed, was released in June on Hulu. On July 21, Nicks’ “Stephen Curry: Underrated” will debut on Apple TV +. The doc, which chronicles the NBA star’s life and career, made its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January.
“When I heard that Ryan was starting a company, I put together this little PowerPoint presentation and pitched him,” remembers Nicks. “I said, ‘Hey, are you guys going to support nonfiction?...

Almost exactly 10 years ago, Ryan Coogler’s “Fruitvale” launched the young Oakland filmmaker into the upper echelons of Hollywood influence. With “Black Panther” and “Creed,” Coogler brought fresh energy and social consciousness to existing franchises while expanding their appeal to underserved audiences. Now, those efforts have expanded to the documentary realm.
Two years ago, Coogler rooted his filmmaking efforts beyond the blockbuster arena in the creation of a production company, Proximity Media, which yielded studio efforts like “Space Jam 2” and the Oscar-nominated “Judas and the Black Messiah.” Initially co-founded by Coogler with wife Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian, the company eventually added a non-fiction division overseen by fellow Bay Area filmmaker Peter Nicks. Over the past year, that collaboration has yielded the company’s first two documentary releases, the Sundance-premiering NBA portrait “Stephen Curry: Underrated” and now “Anthem,” which premiered last month on Hulu. When the American Film Institute announced last year that it was merging AFI Docs, the organization’s annual Washington, D.C., documentary film festival, into the Los Angeles-based AFI Fest, Jamie Shor called Sky Sitney.
Shor, president of PR Collaborative, and Sitney, director of the film and media studies program at Georgetown, had both previously worked for AFI Docs. Shor’s publicity firm had done work for the former festival, previously known as Silverdocs, while Sitney served as AFI Docs festival director from 2005-2014.
“Sky and I were both thinking to ourselves that Washington, D.C., was not going to have a doc presence,” says Shor. “It collectively broke our hearts.”
So, the duo spent the last year and a half creating and building DC/Dox, a new nonfiction film festival based in the nation’s capital. The inaugural four-day festival kicks off on June 15 with the D.C. premiere of...

If the measure of a good documentary about a superstar athlete is in synthesizing what makes its subject tick, “Stephen Curry: Underrated” gets passing grades. And that’s no small compliment, considering the movie spends most of its time at school, a familiar place for director Peter Nicks, whose previous doc, “Homeroom,” served up a very different look at education. With enough fresh stories to keep basketball fanatics engaged and a coda that every soccer mom will appreciate, this is a film that’s worthy of its subject.
Produced in part by Curry’s Unanimous Media, “Underrated” leans on abundant clips of the hoop star’s career and interviews with family, coaches and college teammates, as well as fly-on-the-wall moments that come with the kind of access filmmakers get when the subject helps to drive the project. “Part of our value proposition is really mining all of the corners and shining a light in all of the corners of the documentary landscape,” Smith tells Variety. “Kanopy and Tenk are going to be here as well as the bigger players like Netflix. So, we are looking to be a valuable resource for the entire landscape of documentary. Not every film is one that the streamers are going to acquire, but there’s a home for every doc that we show in the festival.

This year’s Sffilm, San Francisco’s long-running film festival, opened outside city limits. On Thursday, Ryan Coogler took the stage at Oakland’s Grand Lake Theater to introduce “Stephen Curry: Underrated,” the documentary he produced, and pointed to the middle of the room. “I saw my first movie right there,” he said.
For all the history around Bay Area filmmakers, from the early days of Frances Ford Coppola and George Lucas to the Pacific Film Archive, Oakland’s presence has gained traction. Beyond Coogler, there’s another filmmaker whose relationship with the scene goes much deeper.
Boots Riley rose to fame as the frontman for legendary Oakland hip hop group The Coup more than 30 years ago. He reinvented himself as a filmmaker with 2018 Sundance breakout “Sorry to Bother You,” a riotous workplace satire that doubled as a vessel for Riley’s longstanding Socialist values and investment in empowering the working class.

When it opened in 1995 in Times Square, the All Star Café was supposed to be the sports world’s answer to Planet Hollywood. Not only was it developed by the same restaurant chain, but it borrowed from its playbook, attracting legends such as Joe Montana, Shaquille O’Neal, Ken Griffey Jr. and Andre Agassi to serve as ambassadors to the brand. But what began as a red carpet extravaganza slowly deteriorated, a victim of changing tastes and rocky finances.

Sports Illustrated Studios & 101 Studios has partnered with future Hall of Famer Stephen Curry and his Unanimous Media to produce a narrative film and a documentary about the All Star Café. The projects will be based on Jon Wertheim’s 2020 Sports Illustrated article.
The All Star Café opened in New York City on December 18, 1995, with much fanfare as the themed eatery set up to be for sports what the Hard Rock Cafe is for music. It opened with a flurry of paparazzi, red carpet and a slew of A-list celebrities and athletes, but the final buzzer sounded on September 23, 2007, when it shuttered under the cloud of bankruptcy. That final chapter included the largest sports memorabilia heist in history cooked up by a group of knuckleheaded kitchen staffers, in what has been hailed as a Coen Brothers Fargo-esque criminal event.

The star of the 2023 Oscar season was “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” but you could be forgiven for thinking it was A24. The company picked up nine Oscars at the ceremony and there wasn’t a safe commercial bet among them.
On top of launching the zany ambition of “Everything Everywhere” into a $107 million worldwide gross, A24 also scored two Oscars for Darren Aronofsky’s divisive “The Whale,” which sneaked its way past $35 million accumulated over a gradual release plan. Its nominees also included two Cannes acquisitions, Best International Feature Film nominee “Close” and “Aftersun,” which secured a Best Actor nomination for Paul Mescal and solidified his stardom. Despite the blockbuster successes of “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Avatar: The Way of Water” in 2022, the year’s big winner was a company that didn’t exist when these franchises were born.

Stephen Curry: Underrated, a new documentary by Peter Nicks that follows the life of Stephen Curry and his journey to greatness, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah on Monday.
The film tracks Curry’s life from a high school basketball player to his time in Davidson College and the 2008 NCAA tournament to the NBA legend we know now.
During the Sundance premiere, Curry talked about what really brought him to greatness.
“Mostly it was about what preceded in my pre-college and college days of learning who I am that set me on my path to get me to the NBA,” Curry explained. “And everything I learned about myself and what it means to pursue greatness at the highest level, but still be in the moment and embrace what’s happening right in front of you, is what matters because everybody sees the finished product, the accomplishments,...

At the age of nine, Steph Curry realized he wasn't as big as his fellow basketball players. Being undersized and outgunned never killed his love for the game, but if he wanted to make an impact, he was going to have to embrace the challenge of adapting to that reality and figuring out ways to compete. Multiple NBA championships later, it's safe to say he succeeded. Like all classic underdog stories, director Peter Nicks' "Stephen Curry: Underrated" is about determination. But it's also about second chances, and how believing in and supporting someone in their lowest moments can have life-changing consequences.
The film crosscuts between parallel tracks, one chronicling Curry's journey to attempt to win a fourth championship with the Golden State Warriors during the 2021-2022 NBA season and the other tracking his rise at North Carolina's sleepy Davidson College. Interviews with his coaches and teammates provide insight into what...

On Monday night, NBA star Stephen Curry found himself facing a different kind of full-court press — in the form of a mass of reporters lined up on the red carpet at Sundance Film Festival for the world premiere of the new documentary “Underrated,” which chronicles his life and career.
In a lucky bit of scheduling, Curry had the night off from NBA play — it’s mid-season for the reigning NBA Finals Mvp and his team, the Golden State Warriors — so he flew into Park City, Utah to join the filmmakers behind the doc, including director Peter Nicks and producers Ryan Coogler, Erick Peyton and Sean Havey, at its premiere.
The highly anticipated documentary played for a packed house at the Eccles and, before the screening, Curry recalled the first time he watched the finished film, pressing play on a screener in the wee hours of the morning following a game.

Is Steph Curry headed to Wakanda? Possibly!
The NBA icon fielded a two-part question on Monday night in Park City during the audience portion of the post-screening Q&a of his Sundance Film Festival title Stephen Curry: Underrated.
Part one: How has your faith inspired you to get to where you are today? Part two, directed at Curry and producer Ryan Coogler who joined him at center stage: Are you going to be cast in Black Panther 3? After Kolby Mac from Minorities Report got both questions out, Curry nearly doubled over with laughter.
“You tell him if we can see if we can shoot it in the summer and find a nice role for me in that universe — absolutely,” Curry said to lots of laughter from the capacity crowd inside Eccles Theatre. “You put the pressure on, and we’ll see what he says.”
