When I was presented with the chance to sit down and watch the 2021 Hong Kong drama "Ladies Market", I jumped at that chance immediately. Why? Well, because I've lived in Hong Kong and I've always been really fond of the Ladies Market in Mong Kok. So this movie was a very welcomed movie from director Wing-Chung Kwan.
And it was certainly a trip down memory lane to revisit Ladies Market through this movie, and I will say that the story told in this 2021 drama was interesting. Sure, it was a bit of a slow burner, especially if you are expecting the usual fast paced Hong Kong action movies. But this was a drama, and the storyline definitely reflects that. And the writer took time to let the characters evolve and let the audience form bonds with the individual characters through their individual storylines.
Now, I am not familiar with the workings behind the stalls that make up the narrow streets in the Ladies Market, but I feel that this 2021 movie definitely made a good attempt at depicting some of the existences of the people whose lives revolve around this daily market that is flooded with natives and foreigners alike.
It was nice to see a lot of new and unfamiliar faces on the screen, as I haven't been watching a lot of Hong Kong movies recently. Honestly, then the only familiar face in "Ladies Market" was Kai Chi Liu.
If you enjoy a well-written drama that focus on the storyline and the deeper aspects of a narrative, then "Ladies Market" should be something for you. I certainly did enjoy it.
My rating of "Ladies Market" lands on a six out of ten stars.
