Ians Rating: **
This seems to be the year of Hindi remakes of South Indian hits, what with every Friday release banking heavily on either the original box office successes of Tamil or Telugu films. This week, after the official remake of ‘Bholaa’ last week, comes ‘Gumraah’, a yet another Hindi remake of the Tamil film, ‘Thadam’.
As per the credits, ‘Gumraah’, helmed by debutant director Vardhan Ketkar, is a crime thriller and is based on several real-life stories of two identical twins from around the world. For a thriller to engage audiences for two and a half hours, the storyline itself must be interesting, and on that count, the film has a very fascinating premise.

Gumraah
Starring Aditya Roy Kapoor, Mrunal Thakur
The trick of enjoying Gumraah is two-pronged: go with zero expectations, and if you haven’t seen the original Tamil film Thadam, you would be hooked to the story of identical twins (told apart in the Hindi version by one of them wearing printed shirts) who meet in a police station as prime crime accused after one of them snuffs out a wealthy suburban guy , apparently to steal his 20 lakhs.
But hang on! Nothing is as simple as it seems. Not that Gumraah revels in unnecessary complications. It is a neatly done, nominally engaging whodunit crime caper where the fun quotient remains uppermost. The topping never loses it tangy flavour, and that’s what keeps our interest-level perked up right till the end.
Oh, one more thing: unlike several recent crime thrillers that start off well and come to a deadend at the climax,...

Actress Mrunal Thakur recalled shooting for the dance number, ‘Kudiye Ni Teri Vibe’ from the movie ‘Selfiee’ featuring Akshay Kumar, Emraan Hashmi, Diana Penty, and Nushrratt Bharuccha.
She said that it was challenging to learn the dance steps as they were not like typical Bollywood or any other Indian style and moreover she has to do the rehersals by taking out time from her other project.
Mrunal said: “It was wonderful to learn a different dance form. It has a vibe to itself as the lyrics of the song go too. It was very different from Bollywood and any kind of Indian style, so I am excited to do something very different which has action in it too. This pushed me to go out of my comfort zone and, as an actor, I should never restrict myself.”
“More than proving to people that I can do something new, it was a challenge for myself.

Indian actor Aditya Roy Kapur plays the titular lead in the Disney+ Hotstar Indian adaptation of “The Night Manager.”
Based on the 1993 espionage novel by British writer John le Carré, the series follows the night manager of a hotel who is recruited to infiltrate an arms dealer’s inner circle. It was previously adapted in 2016 by David Farr as a BBC/AMC series, with Tom Hiddleston playing the titular night manager and, as revealed by Variety, Anil Kapoor (“Jug Jugg Jeeyo”) as the arms dealer antagonist.
The Ink Factory, which was behind the 2016 adaptation, is also producing the Hindi-language Indian version alongside Banijay Asia. The creator of the Indian version is Sandeep Modi (“Aarya”). When Kapur was approached for the show, he was aware of the earlier production but had not watched it, something he rectified immediately.
