We chat to screenwriter Matthew Graham about Syfy miniseries Childhood's End, Us TV and why he's not doing any more Doctor Who...
Matthew Graham was the co-creator and co-executive producer of hit shows Life On Mars and Ashes To Ashes, and he’s just brought Childhood’s End to the screen in the Us.
Here's the second of two interviews we've done with Matthew. The first took us behind the scenes on the development of the seemingly abandoned live-action Star Wars TV show he was hand-picked by George Lucas to work on, while this one looks at Childhood's End, as well as what he's up to now...
How have you found Syfy? They’ve gone through a big transition in recent years, and really seem to be behind science fiction television again.
I think that’s true. Two years ago, when I sat down to start talking...

Writer Matthew Graham takes us behind the scenes of George Lucas' since-abandoned Star Wars live-action TV show...
Matthew Graham was the co-creator and co-executive producer of hit shows Life On Mars and Ashes To Ashes, and he’s just brought Childhood’s End to the screen in the Us. But off the back of the success of Life On Mars, he was picked by George Lucas to be one of the chosen few to work on the seemingly-abandoned live action Star Wars television show. And whilst he couldn’t share story details from the show – it’s all owned by Disney now – he was able to take us behind the scenes.
Here, then, is the first of two interviews we've done with Matthew. The second, coming to the site shortly, will look at his recent Syfy TV show, Childhood's End, as well as what he's up to now.

Confirm this one down the pipeline for director J.J. Abrams (“Lost”, “Fringe”, “Alias”). His next television show, “Undercovers”, has just gotten the green light from NBC for the 2010-2011 season. The one-hour pilot already in the can stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw (“Doctor Who”, “Bonekickers”) and Boris Kodjoe (“Soul Food”) as a CIA spy couple recently reactivated to duty.
Abrams has been hands-on with the pilot for this show, taking the helm in the director’s chair, producing, and co-writing the pilot with Josh Reims (“Brothers & Sisters”).
Jeff Gaspin, the Chairman of NBC Universal Television Entertainment, talks about Abrams’ new show:
“J.J. has delivered another signature series along with our partners at Warner Bros and we couldn’t be happier.”
Angela Bromstad, NBC primetime president credits Abrams and Reims for bringing the network another potentially great show:
“Having J.J. on our creative team is a great reason for celebration. J.

We’ve been following the development of J.J. Abrams’ latest series Undercovers, for some time – in fact ever since it was announced as a possible pilot for 2010-2011; and now THR are reporting that NBC has picked up 13 episodes of the show for the upcoming fall season.
Abrams co-wrote, produced and directed the Undercovers pilot, which stars British actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Boris Kodjoe as a married couple who are re-activated as CIA agents after years of retirement. Undercovers also marks the first pilot Abrams has directed since 2004’s Lost.
As part of the early pick-up, NBC have released the full synopsis for the show:

J.J. Abrams' CIA pilot, "Undercovers," is NBC's first pickup for the 2010-2011 season. The hour-long pilot stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw of "Bonekickers" and "Dr. Who" and Boris Kodjoe as a married couple retired from the CIA who are reinstated after five years of running a quiet catering company.
"J.J. has delivered another signature series along with our partners at Warner Bros and we couldn't be happier," Jeff Gaspin, Chairman of NBC Universal Television Entertainment, says. Abrams' track record with shows like "Lost" and "Alias" practically guarantees an exciting series, so the full-season order does not come as a surprise.
Abrams co-wrote the pilot episode with Josh Reims of "Brothers & Sisters." Abrams also produced and directed the pilot, his first since 2004's "Lost." In addition to Mbatha-Raw and Kodjoe, the series stars Jessica Parker Kennedy, Gerald McRaney, and Ben Schwartz.

In an interesting announcement, actor Tom Hanks revealed the cast for the upcoming Universal Pictures comedy "Larry Crowne" via a photo on his Twitter account.
Hanks snapped a shot of the casting board, something seen in practically every film production office, which displays head shots of all the major lead and supporting roles in the film. Welcome to your Wednesday morning television briefing. Public Enemies (Universal) Johnny Depp portrays legendary Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger in co- writer/director Michael Mann’s take on America’s first “Public Enemy Number One.” Like many big studio releases today, Public Enemies has it all: A-list talent before and behind the camera, but lacks a heart or soul that allows its audience to connect with it. Film plays out like a “true crime” TV show with re-enactments of famous events cast with top actors and shot by the best technicians in the business, with little, if any, character or story development to hold it together in between. A real disappointment from one of our finest filmmakers and finest actors. The lone standout: the great character actor Stephen Lang as a hard-eyed lawman who’s seen a lot, but manages to retain a tiny piece of his heart. For a better take on the same subject,...

A real disappointment from one of our finest filmmakers and finest actors. The lone standout: the great character actor Stephen Lang as a hard-eyed lawman who’s seen a lot, but manages to retain a tiny piece of his heart. For a better take on the same subject,...

The Prisoner, which ran for just 17 episodes in the late 1960s, has remained an enduring example of how original and groundbreaking the medium of television can be, giving the world a surreal and often nightmarish exploration of the battle between the free will of the individual and the oppression of a tyrannical regime. It was a bit of a gambit then that AMC, in concert with UK terrestrial network ITV, would seek to remake the Cold War-tinged The Prisoner for a contemporary audience. This Sunday, AMC will launch the first two hours of its miniseries version of The Prisoner (subsequent installments air on Monday and Tuesday), written by Bill Gallagher (Conviction) and directed by Nick Hurran (Bonekickers). Jim Caviezel (Passion of the Christ) plays Six, a man who discovers that he is in The Village, an all-encompassing world within the desert where nothing is as it seems. His appearance there...

Arthurian adventure series Merlin returns to BBC1 this weekend with a host of big-name guest stars joining the regular cast for its 13-week run.
Having enchanted audiences of more than 6.3 million in its inaugural series, the show promises more magic, mystery, adventure and romance for Season 2 as the young wizard struggles to keep his powers hidden in the increasingly perilous world of Camelot.
Mackenzie Crook (Pirates Of The Caribbean, The Office, Skins, Demons) is to guest-star in the opening episode as the creepy Cedric (pictured right), who is determined to muscle in on Merlin's position as Arthur's right-hand-man - much to the sorcerer's frustration.
Sarah Parish (Mistresses, Cutting It) will play a horrible troll masquerading as the beautiful Lady Catrina; Adrian Lester (Hustle, Bonekickers) is the devious Myror; Charles Dance (Bleak House, Gosford Park) will guest-star as Aredian, the sinister Witchfinder; and Santiago Cabrera (Heroes) returns as the dashing Lancelot.

The BBC has trailed Bonekickers - the latest project from the makers of Life On Mars - as one of its major commitments to new drama this year. Their work "will lead them into an investigation of the past that will unlock dangers and mysteries in the present". Bonekickers was previously billed for spring but no air date has yet been given. However, it is a centrepiece of the BBC's programming plans for BBC One, which were published today. Other plans for the channel include new Caroline Quentin comedy The Life Of Riley.
