Keira Knightley is making her Black Doves debut.

The Netflix spy thriller was first announced back in April 2023 as a U.K. commission, from in-demand writer Joe Barton and production company Sister (Chernobyl, The Power). Netflix, earlier during the 2024 Edinburgh TV Festival, announced it had already ordered a second season of Black Doves ahead of the first season’s debut.

Now, with the first look image (above) and teaser (below), Black Doves is taking shape, as Knightley plays a British agent whose cover is threatened when her secret lover is assassinated, and she goes looking for revenge.

Season one debuts Dec. 5, 2024.

Exclusive: Fremantle is laying of all staff at storied drama indie Euston Films and docs label Undeniable, with senior execs Mandy Chang and Kate Harwood exiting.

Around 10 staff members have been laid off as nasty economic headwinds and the global contraction bite at Element Pictures and 72 Films-owner Fremantle.

Former BBC in-house drama boss Harwood is leaving Euston along with fellow MD Noemi Spanos and a number of others. All staff are leaving. The Euston brand and IP remain with Fremantle, so the label is technically not closing, we understand. Harwood and Spanos remain attached to their respective IP.

Euston is a fabled British drama indie that was founded in 1971 and made hits including The Sweeney and Van der Valk in its early years. It was revived under Harwood’s leadership in 2014 and went on to make seven shows, with the latest, Nightsleeper, launching on the BBC in just 10 days’ time.

Jennifer Kent’s The Babadook celebrates its 10th anniversary with a return to theaters this September, and we’ve learned that a 10th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray is also on the way.

IFC Films brings The Babadook back to DVD & Blu-ray on October 22, 2024.

Federation Stories U.K.’s creative director Arielle Gottlieb has exited the company following an internal restructure, Variety has learned.

Gottlieb and fellow former Entertainment One exec Polly Williams set up the U.K. office of European production studio Federation Studios three years ago with the aim of working with top drama creatives, especially female ones, to make high-end content for a global audience.

Gottlieb, who was previously VP of scripted at eOne where she worked on shows including “Dublin Murders” and “The Sister,” took on the mantle of creative director at the new shingle while Williams, eOne’s fomer head of scripted, became managing director.

”Following an internal re-structure, Arielle Gottlieb has stepped down as creative director of Federation Stories to pursue other projects,” Williams told Variety in a statement. “Polly Williams continues to lead the company as managing director. With production underway in Belfast, Ireland on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, HBO has announced five new additions to the cast, along with a new director.

New cast members include Finn Bennett (True Detective: Night Country), Bertie Carvel (The Crown), Tanzyn Crawford (Tiny Beautiful Things), Daniel Ings (The Gentlemen) and Sam Spruell (Fargo). Bennett plays Aerion Targaryen, with Carvel as Baelor Targaryen, Crawford as Tanselle, Ings as Ser Lyonel Baratheon, and Spruell as Maekar Targaryen.

Also new to the production is Sarah Adina Smith (Lessons in Chemistry), who has joined to direct three of the six episodes. As previously announced, Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell will also star. Check out a first look still from the series below.

Real-time thriller “Nightsleeper” has been acquired by French network TF1.

Starring Alexandra Roach (“The Light in the Hall”) and Joe Cole (“Gangs of London”), the six-episode thriller unfolds in real-time as a sleeper train travelling from Glasgow to London is hacked and events rapidly escalate on board, causing a government agency to frantically intervene.

“Can two people who’ve never met, one on the train and one not, work together to save the lives of its disparate group of passengers as the Heart of Britain overnight service hurtles towards what might quite literally be its final destination?” reads the logline.

The series, which is produced by Fremantle’s Euston Films for BBC One and BBC iPlayer, was written by “Murdered For Being Different” scribe Nick Leather with Laura Grace writing episodes 4 and 5. It’s directed by Jamie Magnus Stone (“Doctor Who”) and John Hayes (“Dublin Murders”).

Simone Ashley has picked the follow-up to her breakthrough performance as Kathani “Kate” Sharma in season 2 of the hit Netflix series Bridgerton, as Deadline reports that she has the lead role in the psychological thriller This Tempting Madness, which just wrapped production in Los Angeles.

The film marks the feature directorial debut of Jennifer E. Montgomery, who also wrote the screenplay with her husband Andrew M. Davis. Davis has a background in cinematography, including some work on the Sam Raimi-produced horror anthology series 50 States of Fright, so he lensed his wife’s first movie. Inspired by a true story, it sees Ashley taking on the role of a young woman who awakens from a coma grievously injured, memory fractured, her husband arrested. But as she puts together the pieces of her past, she starts to question her own actions — and her perception of reality.

Peaky Blinders and Gangs of London star Joe Cole has been cast as lead in real-time BBC thriller series Nightsleeper.

He’ll play opposite Alexandra Roach (The Light in the Hall) in the drama, which is from Nick Leather. Filming is underway in Glasgow, Scotland.

The BBC first announced the show in December, as we reported here. Set on a sleeper train from the Glasgow to London, the real-time drama follows a government agency desperately trying to intervene as events rapidly escalate onboard. Fremantle and Kansai TV have launched new entertainment format “Quiz Pong” following a co-development deal initially revealed at MIPCOM 2022. The format was launched in Japan last month by Kansai TV and Fremantle will handle the production and global distribution.

“Quiz Pong” is a fast-paced gameshow where teams compete against each other in a fun tournament testing their mental, physical, and strategy skills. The teams go head-to-head by throwing balls into moving baskets, on a supersized set and answering general knowledge questions to score points. The harder the basket is to reach the more difficult the question inside the basket will be for their opponent. After battling through two rounds, the winning teams compete in the grand finale for a prize.

Plot: An amateur bodybuilder (Jonathan Majors) struggles with severe psychological issues while dreaming of stardom.

Review: Elijah Bynum’s Magazine Dreams offers star Jonathan Majors his meatiest role to date. Undergoing a massive transformation that saw him change his body into that of a professional-level bodybuilder, his Killian Maddox is reminiscent of the roles Robert De Niro famously played by Martin Scorsese. Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy both famously inspired Todd Phillips’ Joker (we recently did a Face Off comparing Joker to Taxi Driver), and Bynum’s inspirations seem similar. Yet, as often as we’ve seen this type of role played by white actors, it’s relatively rare for a black actor to dig his teeth into material like this. His race shakes up the formula, making the character a distinct creation for Bynum and Majors.

Former Heyday President Tom Winchester’s Pure Fiction Staffs Up

Former Heyday Television President Tom Winchester’s fledgling See-Saw Films-backed indie Pure Fiction Television has signed Euston Films and Urban Myths Films execs in its first major play. Euston’s Laura Klimke joins as Executive Producer and former Urban Myth Development Exec Yolanda Lee becomes Development Executive. Past credits for the pair include ITV’s The Sister, BBC Three’s Wreck and War of the Worlds. Pure Fiction has also hired Development Coordinator Musanna Ahmed. The trio will work on a slate focused on “prestige commercial content,” seeking IP and original ideas. The company was launched earlier this year by Winchester, backed by Power of the Dog producer See-Saw and talent agency Hamilton Hodell. Winchester spent three-and-a-half years as President of David Heyman’s Heyday, overseeing the likes of Netflix’s Clickbait and hiring teams in London and LA.

The incendiary track that closes the A-side of the Patti Smith Group’s 1978 album, Easter, “Rock n Roll N—-r,” is no longer available on streaming services. The track was quietly removed in recent months from Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, and Amazon Music, though an exact removal date and Smith’s involvement is unknown. The song is still available on physical copies of Easter, which is one of Smith’s bestselling records thanks to its single “Because the Night,” and is still included when people buy the full album as a download.

Korean film producer Baek Jaeho has been named as the inaugural recipient of the Choon-yun Award, a prize set up in honor of Lee Choon-yun, the late chairman of the Korean Association of Film Art & Industry. The award, worth KRW10 million, will be presented on the sidelines of the Busan International Film Festival on Oct. 6 in conjunction with Iok Company. Baek participated in the production of 2021 title “Snowball” and was previously involved in indie films “Jane” in 2016 and last year’s “Role.” He also acts and directs. Veteran director Kang Je-kyu praised Baek as ”a filmmaker who maintains his values and outspreads his potential in the insufficient independent film environment.”

The sales come as Fremantle, thanks to “The Responder,” “Cross Fire,” “Suspect” and “This Sceptred Isle” looks set to see an unprecedented four U.K. premium dramas finishing production in 2022. Led by “Fellow Travelers,” its English-language sales lineup for 2023 looks equally bullish.

Peacock has ordered Supernatural Academy, a YA animated fantasy series adaptation of Jaymin Eve’s The Supernatural Academy books. The project was developed and written by Gillian Horvath and hails from executive producer Allen Bohbot and 41 Entertainment.

Supernatural Academy chronicles an otherworldly adventure of sisters marked at birth. One twin sister was raised in the Supernatural world, confident and popular. Ron Nyswaner is adapting the book for the screen and will also serve as showrunner and executive producer on the series. “Fellow Travelers” is described as a political thriller and epic love story that unfolds in the era of McCarthyism and resolves in the age of AIDS. It follow the intertwined lives and volatile romance of two very different men, Hawkins “Hawk” Fuller (Bomer) and Tim Kovacs, through purges, wars, protests, and plagues, overcoming obstacles in the world and in themselves.

Along with Bomer and Nyswaner, Michael Grandage will executive produce in addition to directing. Robbie Rogers will also be an executive producer on the project. Fremantle will produce.

Entertainment One executives Polly Williams and Arielle Gottlieb have departed the company to set up the U.K. office of European production studio Federation Entertainment.

The outfit will be based in London with Williams as managing director and Gottlieb as creative director. They will also be partners in the operation.

Their remit will be to work with top drama creatives — particularly female creatives — making high-end content for a global audience.

Before jumping ship, Williams was head of scripted at eOne where she developed “Run” and “Red Rose,” while Gottlieb was VP of scripted, where she worked on “Dublin Murders” and “The Sister.”

Federation Entertainment, whose hits include “The Bureau” and “In Treatment,” now boasts production companies in territories including France, Los Angeles, Tel Aviv, Rome and Berlin. The company’s upcoming slate includes the ambitious “Around the World in 80 Days,” co-produced with Slim Film + Television.

Exclusive: Pascal Breton and Lionel Uzan’s Federation Entertainment, the production company behind Canal Plus’ cult spy series The Bureau, is extending its reach to the UK. The prolific indie player is partnering with former eOne Head of Scripted Polly Williams and former eOne VP of Scripted Arielle Gottlieb to launch a new London-based production outfit. The company has yet to be named.

Williams, who will join as Managing Director, and Gottlieb, who will join as Creative Director, will focus on working with premium drama creators to create ambitious English-language content for a global audience. The duo will also aim to bring more female-led content to the Federation slate.

The internet may have decided that Adrian Grenier was the real villain in The Devil Wears Prada, but in the actor’s new Netflix limited series, his character’s innocence remains up for debate.

Garbage have released the video for their new track “Wolves,” the latest single and “pop song” off the band’s upcoming album No Gods No Masters.

“This song reminds me of my younger self when there were two sides to my personality,” Shirley Manson said of “Wolves” in a statement. “I hurt so many people in my life, both knowingly and unknowingly, I’m sure. But when you’re young and in self-survival mode, much like a baby rattlesnake, you have no idea how strong your venom is. But it has the power to kill.

“Chernobyl” producer Sister is adapting the hit Audible original podcast “West Cork” for TV.

Created by Sam Bungey and Jennifer Forde, “West Cork” is an investigation into the 1996 murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier. Du Plantier, a French film producer, was found near her holiday home around the West Cork town of Schull, a serene region on Ireland’s idyllic southern coast. The case is widely known in Ireland, a dragged-out national fiasco and long source of morbid public fascination.

This is the third iteration of the du Plantier story in recent months. Sky has “Murder at the Cottage,” directed by Jim Sheridan, in the works, while Lightbox is producing the same story for Netflix.

U.K. channel BBC Three has commissioned “Wrecked,” a six-part comedy horror series from Fremantle’s Euston Films.

Written by emerging talent Ryan J. Brown, the six-part series is set aboard a mega cruise ship. It follows 19-year-old new recruit Jamie as he joins the crew in search of his missing sister. She was working aboard the same vessel on a previous tour and never made it home. Jamie is initiated into cruise life and gets a crash course on the teen tribes within the staff who party hard and remain oblivious to the bloodthirsty murders taking place on board. Looks like Bridgerton Season 2 is further into development than first thought.

Netflix's biggest show has just cast Simone Ashley as the female lead for its second chapter, in which she will co-star with Jonathan Bailey.

Ashley is set to play Kate Sharma, an independent woman who is new to the high-class world the series is set in.

It was previously confirmed that Season 2 would be toplined by Bailey as his character, Anthony sets off to find the love of his life.

Ashley is coming off a recurring role as mean girl Olivia in Netflix's Sex Education, but she has also starred in The Sister, Casualty, and Pokemon Detective Pikachu.

Chris Van Dusen, the smash-hit series's creator, recently opened up on the Today Show about the second season.

“We’re really going to be [focusing on] the eldest Bridgerton brother next season, Lord Anthony Bridgerton, played by Jonathan Bailey,” Van Dusen dished.

A new year means a new start. But in its list of new year releases for January 2021, Hulu is sending a message of…eh, we’ll get the year started in February. Not to be overly rude to the usually sturdy streaming service, but there’s not much going on for Hulu in 2021’s first month.

Perhaps the biggest release of note is something that already enjoyed a successful release for ITV in the U.K. The Sister is the lates thriller from Neil Cross (Luther) and it makes its U.S. debut on Hulu on Jan. 22. 2020 comedies Save Yourselves and Like a Boss both arrive on Jan. 1.
