The Cappy Darrin Story

The great Ed Wynn is the guest star of this Wagon Train episode where Ward Bond has the duty of delivering Wynn and grandson Tommy Nolan to Tyler McVey the boy's uncle on his father's side. Bond, McVey and Nolan's father all served in the Civil War together and Bond is doing this as a last bequest from Nolan's mother.

But Nolan is dearly attached to his grandfather and Wynn has given him a legacy of a love for the sea. Prarie schooners on the Wagon Train just aren't a substitute. Wynn even has Frank McGrath kind of hooked on his nautical tales and lingo, although later he makes quite the fool of Charlie Wooster.

I can imagine that a real situation like Wynn creates of a fake Indian attack using Chinese fireworks wouldn't be all that funny if you were really involved. But it is hilarious in this story.

In the end in the nice family story the problems of Wynn, Nolan, and McVey are all resolved and Ward Bond and his crew continue guiding the Wagon Train to California. Ed Wynn is still a very funny man.
