Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster comedy “Barbie” has been deemed an adapted screenplay by the Writers Branch executive committee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, despite campaigning for original screenplay, Variety has exclusively learned.

When official Oscar nomination voting opens Thursday, Jan. 11, eligible voting members of the branch will only be able to cast votes for the script written by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach in adapted screenplay.

The film tells the story of Barbie (Margot Robbie), who suffers an identity crisis in Barbie World, leading her on a quest with her beau Ken (Ryan Gosling) to the real world to seek the answers regarding her existence.

Shooman nabs the official, full-time role following serving as interim head since the end of March of this year. He was elevated to the interim role in the wake of an exodus of veteran talent from the indie distributor, which included president Arianna Bocco, PR head Laura Sok, senior publicist Kate McEdwards, director of sales Jasper Bach, and IFC Center lead John Vanco, all within weeks of each other.

Does it count as representational progress when a drama about the fissures that destroy a gay marriage and the ensuing fight for primary custody of the couple’s child is just as bland as any heteronormative version of that sad story?

Bill Oliver’s Our Son boasts solid lead performances from Luke Evans and Billy Porter as the dads whose life together has hit a wall, plus a capable supporting cast stacked with talented theater actors. The movie is tasteful and restrained and sensitively handled at every step. But unless you count one of the men finding post-breakup sexual distraction wrapped around a slinky club kid named Solo (Isaac Powell), there’s too little here to distinguish the film from endless other broken-family dramas that have gone before.

There’s even less to put it on a level with standouts like Kramer vs. Kramer, The Squid and the Whale or Marriage Story.

The official trailer for Warner Bros. Pictures’ most buzzed-about summer movie, Barbie, promises this movie’s for those who love Barbie – and for those who hate the doll. And if you were on the fence about paying for a ticket to see writer/director Greta Gerwig’s twisted take on the popular doll line, the trailer should be the deciding factor. The trailer provides a glimpse of what’s in store once the dolls leave their perfect world and discover what it’s like to live in the real world. Cue an full-on existential crisis.

The cast is led by Oscar nominees Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken. America Ferrera (Superstore), Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live), Michael Cera (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), Ariana Greenblatt (Avengers: Infinity War), Issa Rae (Insecure), Rhea Perlman (I’ll See You in My Dreams), and Will Ferrell (the Anchorman films) also star.

Given his growing tendency to line up half of Hollywood to appear in his films, anyone cast in a Wes Anderson movie might worry just how much screen time they’ll end up getting.

Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach have launched movie fans into excitement with the latest trailer for their new movie, “Barbie.” Gerwig directs the project and she also co-wrote the script with her partner Baumbach. Previously, both scored Oscar nominations in the same year for their work on “Little Women” (Adapted Screenplay for Gerwig) and “Marriage Story” (Original Screenplay for Baumbach). With “Barbie,” the pair of filmmakers could become the first couple to win an Oscar for the same feature film since 2018.

Gerwig and Baumbach would be up for Best Original Screenplay together, while Gerwig could also be up for Best Director, and both could be up for Best Picture (as producers). If they were to win together, they’d become the 19th couple to take home a pair of Oscars for the same movie.

In a recent sitdown with fellow actor Finn Wolfhard for Interview, Jesse Eisenberg said he would have loved to be a cast member on SNL but has found he’s always been steered more towards dramas. “I wanted to be on Saturday Night Live…I wrote a portfolio that I submitted. In capturing tangled family dynamics, one wouldn’t be surprised if Eisenberg looked towards The Squid and the Whale, another one of his Sundance selections (albeit from some two decades ago), for inspiration. While there’s a similar lived-in feel courtesy Benjamin Loeb’s warm 16mm cinematography and a keen sense for awkward, fraught drama––including throwing around profanities at the family table––the script isn’t as polished or piercing as Noah Baumbach’s divorce drama.

Following a November 25, 2022 limited release, the highly anticipated “White Noise” receives its Netflix launch on December 30. The dark comedy, written and directed by Oscar nominee Noah Baumbach, dramatizes a contemporary American family’s attempts to deal with the mundane conflicts of everyday life while grappling with the universal mysteries of love, death and the possibility of happiness in an uncertain world. Noah Baumbach, the director whose previous films include dramas like The Squid And The Whale, offers audiences an absurdist comic fantasy with White Noise. In White Noise, a couple played by Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig live in a pleasant bubble of late 20th century clueless consumerism in a small idyllic-looking college town, until trouble comes to town.

Jack Gladney (Driver) is a college professor and his present and fourth wife Babette (Gerwig) is a stay-at-home mother raising their three children from previous marriages and a toddler of their own. It is the era of station wagons (the family vehicle fav before the minivan that had its peak in the ’70s), and the town is celebrating the parade of family station wagons bearing students like the return of swallows to Capistrano.

White Noise is directed by Noah Baumbach, starring Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig.

White Noise is a respectful adaption of a novel by the irreverent and respected author Don DeLillo, who in a way has spent decades challenging the idea of perceived stability.

Do not be surprised by this dystopia that at times seems surreal, at others uneven, dark and hilarious in its all its farcical glory.

A toxic cloud covers the placid town. Jack is a university professor who is well contented with his life, until he finds himself in the midst of an apocalyptic scenario, and is forced to confront his ingrained notions of his own existence.

Joining Williams for Reichardt’s dramatic comedy are Hong Chau, Andre Benjamin, Maryann Plunkett, John Magaro, James Le Gros, and Judd Hirsch.

Until recently, the literary pedigree of a motion picture could clear a path to an Oscar nomination and often a win. Best Picture champs such as “No Country for Old Men” (2007), “Million Dollar Baby” (2004) and “The English Patient” (1996) all began their lives on the page in works by Cormac McCarthy, F.X.
