Kicking On is quintessentially Australian - and is both hilarious and dramatic while never swerving from the realm of reality.
The scenario is of the conflict arising among good mates in an amateur Australian Rules football team, when the rumour circulates that one of their most macho players had been spotted in the back alley of the pub passionately kissing another man.
I love the fact that Lethal's best mate is more upset about his friend's choice of partner (a guy who missed a vital kick in a finals match) rather than the fact that Lethal is coming to grips with being same sex attracted. Even so when he drops the soap in the club's communal shower that mate is not willing to risk bending over to pick it up.
Through the veneer of generationally ingrained homophobia we see that it's only the shock of the new which has caused all the friction. Lethal's mate reminds him about one of their friends who was found passed out in a urinal a few years ago - and who was eventually able to live that down. (Some consolation.)
This is an informed and charming film which is perfect in every aspect. It is especially empowering for gay viewers, but likely to be highly entertaining for everyone with a sense of humour.
