Shane Black has gone out of his way to insist that his upcoming “The Predator” is less of a typical remake and more of an “inventive sequel.” What exactly he means by that distinction is but one of many unanswered questions about the anticipated project. Also on fan’s minds is who will be playing Quinn Mackenna, the new hero taking over for Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Dutch from John McTiernan’s 1987 original. (Spoiler: It probably won’t be Schwarzenegger.) The latest word is that James Franco is “very high on the list” to lead the new film.

Actor Bryan Cranston keeps a busy schedule these days. He’s already appeared in two films so far this year, “Kung Fu Panda 3” and “Get a Job,” and he’s set to co-star in four more this year. But come next year, Cranston will appear in the new “Power Rangers” reboot as Zordon, the all-powerful mentor for the Power Rangers. In an interview with The Huffington Post, Cranston described his initial reticence to take on the role, because the TV series was “kind of farcical and silly and ‘pow’ and ‘zow’ — weird movements and things like that,” but he changed his mind when he read the script.

“This is as different a reimagining as the ‘Batman’ television series as it became the ‘Batman’ movie series,” Cranston continues. “You can’t compare those two, and nor can you compare this...

James + Semaj is a column where James Franco talks to his reverse self, Semaj, about new films. Rather than a conventional review, it is place where James and Semaj can muse about ideas that the films provoke. James loves going to the movies and talking about them. But a one-sided take on a movie, in print, might be misconstrued as a review. As someone in the industry it could be detrimental to James’s career if he were to review his peers, because unlike the book industry—where writers review other writer’s books—the film industry is highly collaborative, and a bad review of a peer could create problems. So, assume that James (and Semaj) love all these films. What they’re interested in talking about is all the ways the films inspire them, and make them think. James is me, and Semaj is the other side of me.

While Jackie Vernon is remembered by many for his stand-up comedy and for being the voice of Frosty the Snowman, cult horror fans know him as Donald, a frustrated husband who develops a taste for human flesh in 1983’s Microwave Massacre. The horror comedy will be released this summer on Blu-ray / DVD in the Us and UK by Arrow Video, who will also release 1971’s The Bloodstained Butterfly on home media with a new 4K restoration.
While the full release details for the Us Blu-ray / DVDs of Microwave Massacre and The Bloodstained Butterfly have yet to be revealed, we do have a look at the lists of special features for the UK editions, which should feature extras similar to what Us fans can enjoy.
In the UK, Arrow Video will release Microwave Massacre on Blu-ray / DVD on August 15th, followed by an August 22nd Blu-ray / DVD release of The Bloodstained Butterfly.

When we asked our staff to vote on the best comic book movie adaptations, we were afraid the results would consist only of superhero films. While there are many superhero movies listed below, it is great to see a bulk of non-Hollywood films appearing on the list as well. We set out to compile a list of 50 movies but as it were, we ended up with 5 ties, and so the list consists 55 films instead. Let us know if you think we missed something. Enjoy!

55. The Adventures of Tintin
Spielberg’s first venture into animation is one of his best. Taking notes from the classic Raiders of the Lost Ark playbook, Spielberg crafted another spirited, thrilling, and always entertaining adventure. The Adventures of Tintin is one of the most pleasurable, family-friendly experiences, that boils down to one grand treasure hunt. There’s much to admire on-screen, but it is the spectacular...

The biggest deals of this year’s Cannes Marché du Film and how the Competition titles sold throughout the festival.
Behind the glamour of this year’s Cannes Film Festival, business was booming at the Marché du Film (May 13-22), with representatives from 120 countries in attendance - up four on 2014.
A total 3,300 films were on offer this year, around 1,000 at the project stage, with an estimated 11,000 film professionals in attendance, in line with last year.
In the opening days, Marché chief Jérôme Paillard told Screen: “Acquisition agents are telling me that it’s the first time in a number of years that there are so many big projects. I’ve been told there are around 50 high profile projects on offer.”

By May 1945, Nazi Germany had surrendered the Second World War in Europe leaving only the fighting in the Pacific remaining. After threats from the USA, the UK and China to the Japanese of ‘utter destruction’, the Americans finally dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The combined death toll has been estimated up to a 250,000 people.
On March 1st 1954, a Japanese fishing boat called Daigo Fukuryu Maru (Lucky Dragon 5) was searching for tuna near the shores of a small ring of coral reef called Bikini Atoll near the Marshall Islands. After their haul, they returned to the port in Yaizu, Japan all suffering from headaches, nausea and bleeding from their gums and eyes. It was immediately clear what had happened to them – they all had radiation poisoning from the fallout of American atomic bomb testing.

As soon as the opening title sequence of Terror Tract starts you fee like you are watching a campy 80s horror movie. The score featuring generic female screams over melodramatic horns starts from the opening image until we see a quintessential American suburb complete with a young mom walking around in ugly jeans. But Terror Tract is not an 80s movie it was released in 2000 the same year as Final Destination and Scream 3. Adding to the era confusion is 80s star John Ritter who stars as Bob Carter a fast talking real estate agent shepherding the lovely Doyle couple to three different houses for sale each with their own...

This past fall saw the debut of the supernatural horror/comedy Jennifer’s Body, and with the film's Blu-ray and DVD release being only a few weeks away (December 29th), I thought it might be interesting to take a look back at some of the most successful high school horror films that have been released over the past 10 to 15 years.
Jennifer’s Body is a slick production, equipped with fresh young stars, a hip soundtrack, and, of course, strings of "clever" dialogue. And that’s the criteria I’ve chosen to adhere to when working on this top ten list. Some of the films included here aren’t necessarily my favorites, but they’ve been impactful and deserve the call-out all the same. At the risk of spoiling some of the choices, I chose 1996 as the eligibility year for the simple reason that it was the beginning of the glossy,...
