Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan has turned in a menacing new cover of the Raveonettes’ “Chains.”
Gahan crafted the version with frequent Depeche Mode collaborator, Kurt Uenala. While the Raveonettes’ original featured a striking clash of buzzsaw guitars and clattering percussion, Gahan and Uenala give the song an electronic and industrial edge without sacrificing the song’s sense of heightened anxiety.
On Facebook, the Raveonettes’ Sune Rose Wagner celebrated the new rendition, writing, “People always measure success in terms of album sales, chart positions, etc but for me success was...

Now well into its second decade, the Slamdance Film Festival is gearing up for its 2017 edition. Mostly taking place at the Treasure Mountain Inn at top of Park City, Utah’s busting Main Street, Slamdance is dedicated to presenting a festival and a community designed “for filmmakers by filmmakers.”
In previous years, projects from directors like Christopher Nolan, Marc Forster, Jared Hess, Oren Peli, Benh Zeitlin, Seth Gordon, Lynn Shelton and Lena Dunham have bowed at the festival, and it’s become a fertile — if offbeat — proving ground for fresh talents. This year looks to be yet another banner one for the fest, and as such, we’ve gone on a little trip through the Slamdance slate to dig up some prime possibilities for must-see films (shorts and features!).

Penn and Teller pulled back the curtain on their classic trick "Lift Off of Love" during a performance on The Late Late Show Wednesday.
The magicians first performed a straightforward version of the body separation illusion. Teller squeezed inside a set of small boxes covered with the illustration of an astronaut. His limbs and face continue to pop out of various openings as Penn Jillette separates the parts and moves them around the stage.
The pair then gleefully deconstructed the illusion by bringing out a replica set of translucent boxes,...

In his introduction to Saturday’s Next Fest screening of Elizabeth Wood’s “White Girl,” Sundance’s Director of Programming Trevor Groth made explicit reference to Catherine Hardwicke’s “Thirteen.” Through these two films made their debut in the indie film world over a decade apart from each other, the careers of Wood and Hardwicke now serves as intriguing parallel case studies. After the screening, both women talked about the genesises of their respective first films, in a conversation moderated by The Daily Beast’s Jen Yamato.

That last season of Game of Thrones sure was something, wasn't it? The last two episodes especially were just completely mind-blowing. The stage is set to bring the series to a close, and the end is coming sooner than you think.
We knew the series was going to come to an end, but to put things into perspective for you, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have confirmed that there are only 13 to 15 episodes left in the series before it's done. During a recent interview with Deadline regarding the season 6 finale, Benioff said:
"It’s two more seasons we’re talking about. From pretty close to the beginning, we talked about doing this in 70-75 hours, and that’s what we’ll end up with. Call it 73 for now."
So as it stands right now, it's likely we'll only see 13 more episodes, which is kinda crazy. If that's the case,...

Remake / Rip Off / Rampage!!!
Fantastic Fest, the Alamo Drafthouse, Birth.Movies.Death. and SourceFedNERD unite to present the Fantastic Fest 2015 Bumper Contest!
Each year, Fantastic Fest hosts a bumper contest where we invite You (You!!!) to devise the most outrageous and entertaining under-30-second video possible. We use as many entries as we can and play dozens of different bumpers onscreen during the festival with two goals in mind:
1. To represent the creativity and probable mental illness of the Fantastic Fest community, and…
2. To ensure that the audience at the festival won’t have to sit through the same six or seven bumpers over and over again. (We hate that as much as you do.)
Your bumper can, will, and must reflect your unleashed initiative and imagination. But as always, we have a theme and a few ground rules:
This year’s theme is Remake / Rip Off / Rampage, inspired by the Fantastic Fest 2015 film Remake,...

ITV is truly spoiling us with another brand new TV format hitting our screens tonight (Friday, July 31) off the back of last night's Flockstars.

Still think they could combine #Flockstars and #BBQChamp. "Release the sheep! Now cook them!"

Something drastic needs to change in Elementary season 3 if it's going to become the show we all know it could be...
This review contains spoilers.
3.6 Terra Pericolosa
Though terra pericolosa may have the ring of a particularly nasty skin condition, the Italian title of this week’s Elementary translates as “danger zone”, somewhere we hope this consistently mediocre season isn’t heading.
I say hope, because Elementary still has all the potential for greatness. A string of unimpressive entries are no reason to give up on it now (though by the looks of season three’s dwindling ratings, many have done just that).
As one of TV’s most charismatic actors in one of fiction’s greatest roles, Jonny Lee Miller has earned our loyalty. The problem isn’t Miller, or Lucy Liu or Ophelia Lovibond for that matter, but the clumsy combination of their characters.

With Watson out of the way, this week's Elementary was the Sherlock and Kitty show. So how did the pair fare?
This review contains spoilers.
3.5 Rip Off
With Watson packed off on her Danish sabbatical-slash-sexcapade this week, a path was finally cleared for the Sherlock/Kitty partnership to be taken for a test drive to see what it could do. The results? Not thrilling, yet not entirely damning.
The problem with - as one commenter wryly put it last week - Elementary’s “our cousin Oliver” is summed up by Kitty’s response to Gregson’s question at the end of Rip Off. When asked what exactly she told the abusive cop to convince him that a move to Hoboken was the best course of action, Kitty coyly replied, “Does it matter?”.

Chicago – Playwright Martin McDonagh really broke into the film world in a big way with his Oscar-nominated script for the stellar “In Bruges.” He defies the sophomore slump this week with the release of “Seven Psychopaths,” starring Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Christopher Walken, Tom Waits, and Woody Harrelson. McDonagh recently sat down with us to talk about the themes in his work, extreme violence, how much Harry Dean Stanton rules, how he cribbed from “Night of the Hunter” & “Mean Streets,” and much more.

In the decade that has passed since Grand Theft Auto 3 burst into our living room with its 3D graphics, immersive terrain and fast cars, powerful guns and deadly explosives, it spawned the attempts by several video games to copy the formulae for what was soon to become known as the “sandbox” series.
Some developers, admirably, succeeded in taking elements of Rockstar’s GTA franchise and making more exciting and compelling games out of them by adding their own unique features. Others, however, simply tried to sell a GTA Rip Off, and these titles became known as “Grand Theft Auto Clones”.
Here, What Culture! examines five games similar in style to GTA, and breaks them down into the good and the just plain bad.
The Good 5. State of Emergency (2002)
Released a year after Grand Theft Auto 3, this ultra-violent game was developed by Vis Entertainment and released onto the Playstation 2, Xbox and PC.

Justin Bieber made millions from his 3D film last year so now One Direction and Simon Cowell want a slice of the 3D pie. How can we salvage an undoubtedly awful movie?
Say what you like about Simon Cowell, you can't deny he has an appalling taste in movies. Nine years ago he had a hand in the dreadful From Justin to Kelly, a cheap, cynical and transparent money-making exercise in which the winner and runner-up of the first American Idol series sang songs and ran around on a beach, failing to conjure any chemistry together. It was horrible, but Cowell wasn't deterred.
Two years ago, he made StreetDance 3D: a cheap, cynical and transparent money-making exercise in which all the contestants from Britain's Got Talent who Cowell didn't know what to do with were flung together and apparently told to re-enact the plot of Step Up from memory.

Zoe Saldana is in yet another movie where she plays a badass, Colombiana. That's four movies so far. Is there a female out there that is known for being an action star? Milla Jovovich for example? —E.W., via the inbox You really hit the zombie on the head. With four Resident Evil flicks under her skinny supermodel belt, and a fifth in the planning stages, Milla Jovovich certainly fits the description of a female action star. Luke Clark Tyler is a 27-year-old architect living in Hell’s Kitchen in New York City. He’s your typical city hipster, and is lucky in that he rents a studio apartment for only $800 a month. The room is the same width as a full size bed, and only slightly longer. We dare any claustrophobic person to make it through all 6 minutes of this video… Ed. Note: It can’t be done. Also $800? Rip Off. Well, no. Not really. However, that is the title of the latest indie horror comedy from Panik Attak Productions. Maybe now those disembodied kids in the woods are actually laughing at something funny?
In any event below you'll find the trailer for this newest project, which was written and directed by "Aj".
The film is an attempt at "documenting a filmmaker's (Paul Jay) ill-fated attempt to make the next big thing." You know what this really reminds us of? The fact that the powers-that-be have kept Ed Sanchez and Daniel Myrick at bay while everyone and their grandmother cash in on the whole Blair Witch cinéma-vérité inspired schtick.
We know Elly Kedward still has some spunk and scares left in her. Please make it so.
Thanks to DC reader Avery for the heads-up.

The spastic, ear-needling noise surrounding Times New Viking’s songs has always been hard to justify. Sure, their music has an ornery, almost inhospitable exterior, but the cores of albums like Rip it Off are happily indebted to spontaneous pop — the trio’s glimmering yelps are at once both mangled and ambrosial, and a hell of a lot more disarmed than all the tape-hiss around it....

In 1968, a strike by female employees at Ford laid the groundwork for the Equal Pay Act. It seemed like a great triumph, but the truth has proved very different
Rip off your pinny, reach for the Biba frock, get that asymmetric bob: it's the 60s all over again. Feminism's second wave is brewing, Barbara Castle is first secretary of state and the 187 women who sew car seats at the Ford Dagenham plant are out on strike.
Made in Dagenham, the new film from the Calendar Girls team, goes on general release next month. It is an exhilarating conflation of a series of events that culminated in the Equal Pay Act 1970 – including the Ford strike, another at the Lucas components plant, and the formation of a national committee for women's equal rights. It is a film that will surely send everyone who sees it back into battle to close a pay...

Hayden Christensen will not fade into obscurity even though he’s stopped doing movies. He recently popped onto our radar when he and cutie Rachel Bilson ended their engagement. Now he’s back again alongside his older brother suing the USA Network because they apparently plagiarized the brothers idea for a TV show. The brothers Christensen claim they approached the channel (they’re an NBC subsidiary) in 2005 with the idea for Housecall which which going to be a comedic drama about a concierge doctor making house calls to the jet set. And Voila! USA Network has a show, now in its second season, called Royal Pains. Guess what it’s about? Yup - it’s a comedic drama about a concierge doctor making house calls to the jet set. The brothers are crying “Rip off!” and have filed suit in Manhattan federal court. Naturally, no comment whatsoever from the network.

Did Led Zeppelin Rip Off a Folk Singer?
Led Zeppelin must have been a little "Dazed and Confused" when it recorded the classic by the same name 41 years ago -- because it sounds just like a folk song -- so says the folk singer who's now suing Zep's guitarist, Jimmy Page.
According to the Federal lawsuit obtained by TMZ, folk singer Jake Holmes says he snagged a copyright for "Dazed and Confused" in 1967, two years before Zeppelin recorded its version that sounds suspiciously similar.
Could it be -- Zep ripped off a folk singer? Listen to the 1967 recording. Source: TMZ...

The guys at Team Tiger Awesome are regular standouts on Atom.com, dreaming up clever spoofage to pass the days away. And with the finale of ABC’s mind bender Lost fast approaching on May 23rd, they sought fit to create 11 possible endings for the hit series. They borrow heavily from other famous endings—like the most watched episode in the history of television, the M*A*S*H finale. So here they are, all eleven of them, for your enjoyment. They made eleven of these alternate endings, with the last one a not so subtle shout out to Atom sponsor Burger King. This, for the benefit of future rock historians, is the transscript of a screenplay I wrote in the summer of 1977. It was tailored for the historic punk rock band the Sex Pistols, and was to be directed by Russ Meyer and produced by the impresario Malcolm McLaren. It still carried its original title, "Anarchy in the U.K.," although shortly after I phoned up with a suggested title change, which was accepted: "Who Killed Bambi?" I wrote about this adventure in my blog entry McLaren & Meyer & Rotten & Vicious & me. Discussions with Meyer, McLaren and Rene Daalder led to this draft. All I intend to do here is reprint it. Comments are open, but I can't discuss what I wrote, why I wrote it, or what I should or shouldn't have written. Frankly, I have no idea.

If the internet powers-that-be ever give out Purple Hearts to those of us out there who take dozens of cinematic bullets for the sake of keeping you informed, showing nothing short of bravery in the face of complete bullshit, then the first ever recipient should no doubt be our very own Foywonder.
Yep, he took the bullet for us all ... again ... by sitting through the ill-conceived, ill-guided, illness-inducing steaming turd of a film(!) known as The Asylum's latest "mockbuster" Paranormal Entity, which is the next in the studio's long line of films that hope in earnest to cash in on the success of another's hard work.

Through a lifetime of roles such as Julian Marsh in "42nd Street", Sky Masterson in "Guys and Dolls," and, of course, Detective Lennie Briscoe on "Law and Order," Jerry Orbach garnered fame, fortune and the love of an entire city. But perhaps his most valued role was that of husband to his wife, Elaine.Monday night, friends and colleagues gathered to celebrate the love story of Jerry and Elaine Orbach. Famed friends took the stage in New York at the Snapple Theater Center's Jerry Orbach Theater to share memories of Jerry and Elaine, and present excerpts from "Remember How I Love You," a posthumously published memoir of the late couple's romance. Recently released this month, copies of the book were sold to benefit The Eye-Bank for Sight Restoration and Bideawee, an animal welfare organization. The book presents short love poems that Jerry wrote each morning before heading off to work,...

Call it tough love! Thandie Newton has a message for her two girls as they grow up: Pain is all part of life.
The British actress was giving the advice after she bought her daughters, Ripley, 9, and Nico, 4 ½, bikes. Rip — as her mom calls her — cannot yet ride and was in tears because she had been teased by a young friend who said she would fall off.
“I said, ‘Yes baby, but you’ll get back on again and it’ll be sweeter for having fallen off,’” Thandie notes.

Maybe the Dharma Initiative is actually just a front to saturate the American automobile market with reliable, affordable Korean-made cars. (So that's why Jin and Sun were on that plane.) Kia Motors is sponsoring a five-episode Internet miniseries by ABC called Mysteries of the Universe: The Dharma Initiative, a set of short-form documentaries about the enigmatic research institute that is central to the show's mystery. Not only are these faux-documentaries pure Lost mythology, they're done up in impeccable '80s investigative journalism style, complete with VHS tracking lines. It's so authentic I feel sorry for whoever got stuck with putting them on a video cassette before ripping them and putting them up on ABC.com. "All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players: They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts." -William Shakespeare, from As You Like It. While it is often cliché to quote Shakespeare, no words ring more true when attempting to analytically examine two films that share more than just themes and narrative elements: Frederico Fellini's 1963 classic 8½ and Charlie Kaufman's 2008 enigmatic film Synecdoche, New York. Aren't all men merely playing out the destiny given to them, taking cues and direction while slowly losing grip on one's own life? Men simply create an artificial dialogue, feigning love and hate, all the while waiting for the final curtain call. It is with this idea in mind that Fellini crafted a work that transcends the normal conventions of film with a narrative that speaks volumes about the bounds of conventional morality,...

Furthering its digital extensions of its franchise primetime hit series Lost, ABC debuted this week a web series primer, Lost Untangled, taking a lighter spin on catching up confused newbies. The recap series blends comic book graphics with Lost action figures spoofing actual scenes from the show. This sounds familiar. Oh wait, haven't The Fine Brothers been spoofing Lost with action figures for over a year now? Their hit web series parody Lost: What Happens Next? has racked up over 4.5 million views on YouTube and other sites since its debut last January. Both use the same action figures licensed to a Chinese manufacturer, shaky hand-held figurine movements and silly exaggerated riffs on the actual characters' voices. Interesting.
