There are numerous ways in which a biopic of a statesman or a politician can be put together in cinema and the chosen approach depends, partly, on the reverence with which the person is regarded by the public likely to watch the film. When a statesman is as well-regarded as a Lincoln or a Gandhi, it is impossible to be ‘truthful’ because a biopic, not being a documentary but an enactment, will be seen as being deliberately scurrilous unless its views agree with the dominant one. Where, in a biopic of a less venerated or more distant historical figure like a Te Lawrence or a Queen Elizabeth I, the director is allowed to become intimate with the subject, this is taboo when dealing with a Gandhi or a Lincoln. Films Division India will organize ‘Baapu’ a festival of films and arts on Mahatma Gandhi from 2nd to 5th October, 2012. This is to commemorate the 143rd birth anniversary of the Mahatma. The festival will be held at the Rr Theatre, Films Division, Mumbai. Veteran film maker Shyam Benegal will inaugurate the event.
Registration starts from 10 am on 2nd October, 2012.
The festival includes Baapu Bhajans, screening of feature films, documentaries, slide show and interactive sessions with renowned film makers. Some of the feature films are Gandhi, The Making of The Mahatma, Gandhi My Father, Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara and Lage Raho Munna Bhai. While some of the documentaries are Lines of Mahatma, Gandhi An Emerging Reality, Gandhiji through the Eyes of the Cartoonist, Gandhi, Nehru and Modern Art, Gandhiji’s letter to Hitler and Places where Gandhiji lived.

Well known Indian film maker Shyam Benegal will be in the “spotlight” at the 10th edition of the Belfast Film Festival, being held from April 15-30 in Belfast, Ireland.
The festival will screen Benegal’s “Zubeidaa” on the 26th of April and “The Making of the Mahatma” on 25th of April. He will also deliver a public lecture on April 22 and participate in the discussion on his films after screening.
The festival will offer over 30 UK/Irish premiers with 125 screenings from over 25 countries, including Japan, Russia, Argentina, Iran, South Africa, and Israel.

Dublin actor Colin Farrell and Belfast native, Ciaran Hinds will feature on the big screen in next month's Belfast Film Festival. The event, in its 10th year, will feature "Triage" staring Colin Farrell as a war photographer in Kurdistan in the last 1980's, on opening night, April 15. Other Irish movies to hit the Belfast screen includes the debut of Conor McPherson's Ifta-winning movie, "The Eclipse" staring Belfast born Ciaran Hinds. The festival has a lot of international links and this year one of the pioneers of the new cinema in India, Shyam Benegal, will attend the Festival to speak about his two movies, "Zubeidaa" and "The Making of the Mahatma", both of which will be screened.
