- My review of Heera Panna(1973) Heera Panna was Dev Saab's third film as a director. It was a reasonably good film which did above average business. The doe eyed Raakhee portrayed grace and elegance, while the bikini clad Zeenat was all about physical charm, and a sheer delight for the camera. Mainly, the movie is a road caper filmed on Bengaluru- Chennai Highway with flashbacks of some exotic locales of Hongkong. Heera ( Dev Anand) is an international photographer who has an affair with an air hostess Reema (Raakhee) in Hongkong who unfortunately dies in a plane crash.Heera comes to India to attend a party thrown by a Maharaja of an estate near Bengaluru. In the party, Paintal and Zeenat steal the royal diamond of Maharani and hide it in Heera's car. As the story unfolds, we know that Zeenat was emotionally blackmailed by Dheeraj into participating in the diamond heist. Dheeraj works for Jeevan but wants the diamond all by himself with the help of Manmohan and Maruti. Sudhir and Shyam Kumar are Jeevan's partners but they also get greedy and attempt to get hold of the diamond for themselves. Since Jeevan boss is too smart to trust Dheeraj, Shyam Kumar, or Sudhir; he sends a separate team of his men disguised as policemen, and finally joins the ranks himself. The hero comes to know that Panna ( Zeenat) is Rakhee's sister and convinces her to leave the villain ( Dheeraj) and restore the diamond to its rightful owner. Meanwhile, all the goons land there to take possession of the diamond and there is a Western style gun fight in which the hero proves that he is not only an ace cameraman , he is also a sharp shooter who is a faster draw than the best of the cowboys. The rocky terrain that adjoins the Bengaluru- Chennai Highway makes it the perfect setting for a Western. Dev, Zeenat, and Raakhee look great; and Rehman shines in a cameo. AK Hangal,Manmohan, Sudhir, Shyam Kumar, and Paintal have nothing much to do. Dilip Dutt ( Do you remember Mani of Guide) looks pathetic as Jeevan's henchman disguised as a policeman. RD Burman's music is very good particularly the songs- Panna Ki tamanna, and Bahut Door Mujhe Chale Jaana Hai. When I first saw the movie, there was another lovely song- Ek Paheli Hai Tu, Nar Naveli Hai tu- which is not there in the you tube version. The movie would have done more business if Panna (Zeenat) was not killed in the end.The viewers expected Dev to unite with Zeenat particularly as he had lost his earlier girlfriend Reema (Raakhee) to a plane crash. What was the point in killing both the heroines?
