The first trailer for “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” has arrived. Netflix released this glimpse at its upcoming original roughly two weeks ahead of the Season 2 premiere of “Monsters” on Sept. 19.
The trailer starts with the night of the murders. As Lyle (Nicholas Chavez) and Erik (Cooper Koch) get out of their car with shotguns in hand, Dr. Jerome Oziel (Dallas Roberts) says, “I’m going to need you to walk me through what happened.” As he talks, Lyle and Erik enter their house. Only flashes of gunfire are seen next.
“Part of this process is the two of you reconnecting, growing closer as brothers,” Dr. Oziel continues.
“Erik and I killed our parents together, so I’d say that makes us pretty close,” Lyle counters while sitting on the therapist’s couch with his brother.

“Mad Men” did much to romanticize the art of the ad agency, with many of the series’ most memorable scenes in thrall to the creative and strategic genius that goes into a successful sell. Not all advertising is quite so elaborately or expensively conceived, though as “Eight Postcards From Utopia” makes clear, even the most utilitarian or workmanlike commercials have a cultural value of their own. Assembled wholly from a vast archive of post-Revolution Romanian TV ads, Radu Jude and Christian Ferencz-Flatz’s witty, chaotic documentary carves out a tumultuous 30-year-plus history of a country transitioning from socialism to capitalism — all via the ways in which everything from beer to laundry detergent to banking is pitched to the viewing public.
Ostensibly experimental in form but straightforward in concept, “Eight Postcards From Utopia” is presented as a “found-footage” film in the truest sense of the term — with these vintage ads, often on grainy video stock,...

A year on from the Locarno Film Festival’s international premiere of Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World, which won the festival’s special jury prize on the way to becoming the filmmaker’s most celebrated work to date, a pair of new found-footage films by Radu Jude were screened publicly for the first time on Sunday night at this year’s edition of the festival. Exploring related themes with wildly different approaches, Eight Postcards from Utopia and Sleep #2 showed the Romanian provocateur retaining his fascination with death, the media, capitalist exploitation, and national identity.
Eight Postcards from Utopia is a sharp, mesmerizing, and frequently hilarious hour-long montage of clips from TV commercials broadcast in Jude’s homeland, from the end of communist rule in the 1980s up until the early 2000s. Grouped by theme, style, or audio-visual motif into eight sections, with such titles as “Masculine/Feminine,...

Game 6 of the World Series on Tuesday marked a win for both the Atlanta Braves and Fox. The Braves clinched their first World Series championship since 1995, and third overall, with a 7-0 victory over the Houston Astros.
The 2021 World Series ender not only placed Fox’s back at the top of primetime but also scored a 2.8 rating in the 18-49 demo and 11.81 million viewers in early Nielsen numbers. Those totals surpass the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 2020 World Series win which also took six games. Last night’s game also got a bump compared with this year’s World Series opener.
Just for a pre-pandemic comparison, the 2019 World Series snagged 21.9 million viewers and a 5.6 demo rating in early numbers. Across all of Fox’s platforms, that Washington Nationals’ Game 7 victory over the Astros scored 24 million viewers.
Last night’s numbers are set to rise pending adjustment, as is the case with most major live events.

It was a down night for regularly scheduled programming on the broadcast networks thanks to the deciding game of the World Series.
The game averaged 11.8 million viewers and a 2.7 rating in the demo on Tuesday.
La Brea, which has been a sturdy ratings performer thus far, slipped two-tenths and a million viewers week-to-week.
It had 4 million viewers and a 0.4 rating, but the erosion could be attributed to the competition, as well as the lack of support from a recap show of The Voice (4.8 million/0.5 rating).
La Brea is a hit on Peacock and DVR, so the show is a lock for renewal at this stage. If it recovers next week, it will solidify itself as one of the biggest new shows.
New Amsterdam had 2.8 million viewers and a 0.3 rating to close out NBC's night.
Over on CBS, FBI (6.7 million/0.6 rating), FBI: International (5.3 million/0.5 rating), and FBI: Most Wanted (4.9 million/0.4 rating) all came down,...

The “FBI” franchise at CBS could soon be expanding. Variety has learned from sources that the network is plotting a new spinoff called “FBI: International.”
The potential series would deal with the agents that make up the international branch of the FBI. Per the Bureau’s website, they have 63 legal attaché offices and more than two dozen smaller sub-offices in various countries around the world that maintain relationships with law enforcement in those countries.
According to sources, Derek Haas is writer and executive producer on the series, with Dick Wolf and Peter Jankowski also executive producing via Wolf Entertainment. Haas was previously the co-showrunner on “FBI.” He also co-created the Wolf Entertainment NBC series “Chicago Fire,” on which he serves as showrunner and executive producer, and co-developed “Chicago P.D.” and “Chicago Med,” on both of which he continues to serve as executive producer.

CBS is keeping two of the most popular comedies on TV for another season.
The network announced today that it has renewed its popular Monday night comedy block of The Neighborhood and Bob ♥ Abishola for the 2021-2022 broadcast season.
On a highly competitive night, The Neighborhood, currently in its third season, is television’s #2 most-watched comedy, reaching 7.06 million viewers.
Bob ♥ Abishola, also a top-rated comedy, has an audience of 6.70 million in its second season.
In live + same-day results, The Neighborhood is averaging a 0.8 rating, while Bob Hearts Abishola is averaging a 0.7 rating.
Their renewals were never in question due to the strong results, especially considering the sporadic scheduling due to the pandemic.
“We’re extremely proud of these two comedies, and delighted to bring them back next season,” said Thom Sherman, Senior Executive Vice President, Programming, CBS Entertainment.

Just as the Super Bowl traditionally inhibits studios from releasing new titles to theaters, there were few fresh films available on home platforms. As a result, four titles — all previously ranked #1 on multiple charts — took the top spots again. The exception was Netflix, which debuted “Malcolm & Marie” February 5. Starring Zendaya and John David Washington, it immediately became the streamer’s most-watched film.
Long-running, still-Premium VOD titles “Greenland” and “News of the World,” along with $5.99 rentals “Tenet” and “Let Him Go,” are this week’s chart toppers. “News” and “Tenet” made all four lists (as did “The War with Grandpa”). “Let Him Go” failed to make Spectrum’s top 10, with its price reduction coming too late to impact the list.
There were a few surprises. Why is “2067,” an Australian science-fiction film starring Ryan Kwanten and Kodi Smit McPhee, available for $0.99 at Apple? (It’s more expensive elsewhere.) “Promising Young Woman,...

HBO Max is set to enter into its second month of existence. And you know what that means: it’s Christmas in July!
HBO Max’s list of new releases for July 2020 is highlighted by one prominent Christmas movie: last year’s Emilia Clarke-starring Last Christmas. But the real cause for Christmas in July is all the exciting animated DC content coming our way on the first of the month. July 1 sees the arrival of just about every animated Batman project ever created. July 1 also features the arrival of just about every Justice League animated series ever created as well.
If that weren’t enough, July 1 is also when every live-action Superman movie (save for Man of Steel) makes it streaming debut. July is starting to look like a month where HBO Max establishes its real potential and geek culture bonafides…despite an at-times difficult rollout.

When HBO Max launched last month, DC fans hoped it would be the premiere place to go to watch all their favorite DC content. While the streaming service did have an impressive array of films and TV shows available on launch, there were a lot of notable missing titles, too, due to pre-existing licenses getting in the way. As time goes on, though, more DC properties will end up on the site. Case in point: this July will see a whole heap of superhero content go up on HBO Max.
