Jamie Croft shines in the lead role of Bruno Gunther, a 14 year old boy growing up in 1930's Australia with German immigrant parents. The series follows Bruno's adventures living in his small community; Fires, 'ghosts' and a car race being amongst the highlights. 'Sun on the Stubble' depicts families in a realistic way; they argue and annoy each other but there is also a lot of love there, mainly held together by the mother (portrayed with suitable restraint by Susan Lyon).
This is a well made show with solid performances all round especially from Christian Kohlund as his cantankerous but loving father and Anne Burbrook as prim Miss Knightly, Bruno's new teacher. Although a story about a boy in 1930's Australia doesn't sound too interesting, this programme is definitely worth looking at. Also known as 'The Valley Between.'
