Alternate versions

The Dimension version makes some changes to the original, including a new score by Stephen Edwards, new sound effects, new opening/closing credits, a slightly shortened ending, and to the script.

Compared to the standard Hong Kong version, an extended Cantonese version (on the Chinatown Video VHS) contains different music cues, credit sequences, and dialogue, but also some of the footage present in the Taiwanese version:

• Extension of Fujita's lecture.
• Chen and Mitsuko's exit from the school.
• Extension of the chess scene.
• Start of Fujita's kick during the finale.
• Extension of both duo's exit and the soldiers emerging during the finale.
• Extension of the penultimate shot.

It contains two consecutive shots that only appear in the Hong Kong and international versions:

• Uncle Gun in the kitchen.
• The portrait of Fok.

The Taiwanese version contains different music cues, credit sequences, and sound effects; it also features approximately four minutes of footage in comparison to the Hong Kong version:

• Extension of Fujita's lecture.
• Chen and Mitsuko's exit from the school.
• Ting-Yan smoking opium at the brothel.
• Ting-Yan sitting at night time.
• Extension of the chess scene.
• Start of Fujita's kick during the finale.
• Extension of both duo's exit and the soldiers emerging during the finale.
• Extension of the penultimate shot.

It is, however, missing two consecutive shots found in the Hong Kong and international versions:

• Uncle Gun in the kitchen.
• The portrait of Fok.
