Dr. Rex Martin (Bill Pullman) mentioned that he went to "Miskatonic University", the college where Re-Animator (1985) took place. Miskatonic University is supposedly located in Arkham, Massachusetts, a fictional town created by H.P. Lovecraft.
In the late 1980s, Julie Corman got summer interns to go through several hundred old scripts. The best one they discovered was this one written by Charles Beaumont for Roger Corman in the 1960s. Director Adam Simon liked it and updated it for modern times.
H.P. Lovecraft created a fictional medical doctor character named "Dr. Halsey". Late in the movie, Halsey (Bud Cort) turned out to be a medical doctor.
In one scene, Bill Pullman screams, "I'm not dead yet!" He screams the same line in The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988) when his character is being buried alive.
Shot in twenty days.
