Long before user-generated video clips dominated social media, they were the source of laughs and prize money on America’s Funniest Home Videos, which launched 35 years ago.
Series creator Vin Di Bona was fascinated by Japanese comedy programs featuring home footage, leading him to adapt one into the 1980s celebrity game show Animal Crack-Ups, hosted by Alan Thicke.
In 1989, Di Bona discovered Japanese variety show Fun With Ken and Kato Chan, with two hosts quipping about viewer-submitted videos. He compiled an eight-minute pitch video using Japanese clips and enlisted Animal Crack-Ups writer Todd Thicke (Alan’s younger brother) for the pilot. Thicke tested the video out on friends and recalls actress Jane Seymour loving it but also expressing concern for anyone taking a spill.
“That was a really good note,” says Thicke, an executive producer until 2015. “We called it ‘recovery’ and always wanted to show that no one was really hurt.

Last month, Vin Di Bona was at a car show when he struck up a conversation with a fellow gearhead. When Di Bona mentioned that he was the producer behind “America’s Funniest Home Videos,” the 40-something man exclaimed, “My kid and I watch that show all the time!” — and then proceeded to sing the familiar theme.
When “Afv” launched 35 years ago, that man would have been in elementary school. Di Bona, who has watched his series now span multiple generations, never gets tired hearing about its impact.
“We see it in the studio,” he says. “I can’t tell you how many times someone will say, ‘I watched this with my parents.’”
“Afv” launched as a special in 1989 on a bit of a lark: As video cameras had finally reached critical mass in American homes, the idea was that there must be enough hilarious footage out there to create a one-time clip show.

What can we find at the end of the dragon’s tail? More dragons, apparently. After airing its season 2 finale on August 4, “House of the Dragon” was still the most-watched streaming program on the Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report for the week of Aug. 5-11, as viewers caught up on the season.
Even in a week during which it did not release a new episode, “Dragon” bested this week’s big streaming series debut, “The Umbrella Academy” Season 4. Netflix added the six-episode season on Aug. 8 and drew enough households to place the series at No. 6 this week. The first episode of Season 4 was seen by 559,000 U.S. households during the first four days it was available.
Oddly, “Umbrella Academy” wasn’t the most noteworthy addition to the Netflix library. Tom Cruise’s Jack Reacher films were recently added to the streamer and made the Top 10 this week. “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back,...

With all of the choices that streaming provides to viewers, there’s a widespread belief that we’ve come to the end of the era of monoculture, where a mass TV audience watches the same program at the same time. “House of the Dragon” seems to buck this trend, as the HBO and Max series’ Season 2 finale perches the show atop the streaming chart once again.
Chasing the tail of the “Dragon” this week is a crop of theatrical releases and feature films. “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” swings into second this week after being added to Hulu on Aug. 2. The latest installment of the simian series hit movie theaters barely more than three months before it began its streaming run. It’s followed by “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” last week’s No. 2 and another 2024 theatrical release.
