The film was originally made by 20th Century-Fox, but they decided that it had too much nudity, sex, violence and drug references for them, so they sold it to the independent Aquarius Releasing.
The film was drastically re-edited before its release because of the MPAA (Motion Picture Association Of America) rating board's strict guidelines on graphic violence, language and nudity at that point in time. Edits are most noticeable during the film's many jump cuts, specifically the attacks on the strippers by the unnamed killer. Ultimately, it caused Twentieth Century-Fox to sell the film to an independent distributor for a theatrical release.
The film cast includes three Oscar (Academy Award) nominees: Melanie Griffith, Tom Berenger and Michael V. Gazzo.
The movie had its World Premiere in France in 1984 under its French title of ''New York, deux heures du matin''.
