Sharing many of the same themes, "To Kill a Mastermind" was heralded by Shaw fans at the time as director Sun Chung's high testosterone counterpoint to Cheh Chang's Five Deadly Venoms (1978) (aka "Five Venoms"). Both comparable scripts were penned the by the prolific pulp writer 'Ni Kuang'.
