Following their success with 2015’s Straight Outta Compton, and the debut of some of their line-up on Blu-ray, Xenon Pictures are releasing a series of classic (a broad term) Blaxploitation movies on VOD this month.

Happy Memorial Day, everyone! While you’re off enjoying some much-needed downtime with friends and family, we’ve gone ahead and put together a recap of this week’s horror and sci-fi home entertainment releases that are coming our way on May 30th.

For those of you cult film aficionados out there, get those wallets ready, because there’s a bunch of great titles arriving on Blu-ray this Tuesday, including Blackenstein, Evil Ed, The Blood of Fu Manchu / The Castle of Fu Manchu double feature, The Hearse, The Undertaker, Slaughterhouse Rock, and Hide and Go Shriek.

As far as new genre films go, The Blackcoat’s Daughter (one of my personal favorites of 2017) and Rupture are making their way to Blu-ray and DVD, with the Shock-o-Rama box set also coming out on DVD.

Blaxploitation made its move on the horror market with Aip’s Blacula (1972); so successful was the foray that the money wheels started turning towards a follow up. And while Aip was busy cooking up a sequel to their surprise hit, an outsider saw an opening in the window of the American Dream and leapt right through. Frank Saletri may have been a lawyer by trade, but his heart belonged to horror and he gave his all to write and produce Blackenstein (1973) – a movie somewhat better than its godawful reputation, restored for posterity on Blu-ray by the fine folks at Severin Films. Hellgate was released at the very back end of the 1980′s, written by Michael O’Rourke and directed by William A. Levey (Blackenstein) and featured, as it’s selling point and headline act, the late Ron Palillo (Welcome Back, Kotter), an actor who had been mostly known for his work in television sitcoms and bit-parts on drama shows and low-budget films. Palillo plays, for lack of a better term, the “stud” of the movie, and we even get to see him, straddling and wiggling in his birthday suit, a disturbing moment in cinema, for sure. His performance is lacklustre like the rest of the performances in the film, but once you get used to it… actually, scrap that, you never get used to it,...
