Looking back at Jeff Goldblum and Laurence Fishburne wearily fighting the war on drugs 25 years ago.
This Monday marked the 25th anniversary of the release of Deep Cover, itself an endpoint of the preceding quarter-century. It bears a deep weariness, beset by crime, racism, and, increasingly, the American government itself. Every frame of the film is soaked in that weariness, and its script explicitly addresses it, as the entire business of its story turns out to be that of the American government’s profit from the illegal drug trade, with then-president George H.W. Bush and the former president of Panama, the notorious CIA operative Manuel Noriega addressed by name.
That it’s ostensibly a crime thriller, a genre picture, makes Deep Cover all the more effective a messenger. In his last film billed as “Larry” — while we’re talking about culmination — Laurence Fishburne stars as a young police officer who, as...

Sabine moves centre-stage in this week's Star Wars Rebels episode, which showcases a friendship critical to her history...
This review contains spoilers.
2.6 Blood Sisters
While last week’s episode of Star Wars: Rebels focused on Hera, this week gives us a look at Sabine in a similar way, sending her into a perilous flight with an old friend-turned-enemy. Ketsu Onyo, played with youthful energy by Gina Torres, helped Sabine escape the Imperial Academy on Mandalore and ushered her into the life of a bounty hunter. Now, the two find themselves competing to capture a Rebel droid bound for Bail Organa.
Blood Sisters hinges on the titular sisterhood. Although the two aren’t literally from the same family, they do have a lot of history, and if that relationship wasn’t convincing, the episode would feel flat. Instead, it does work, thanks in part to some unsubtle...

Adult Swim is clearly trying to compete with MTV by shocking people. They have a new series called Black Jesus. It will feature an African American Jesus who lives in the ghetto and deals with all kind of people, including gangs. It will feature foul mouths and violence in the series, which is exactly what people are upset about. American Family Association spent today making their feelings very known in time before the August 7th premier takes place. Here is what they had to say about the show, which you can view the trailer down below.
The depiction of Jesus swearing and “using violent behavior is a new low, The blasphemous, irreverent and disrespectful show depicts him living in Compton Gardens and makes a mockery of the Lord. The garbage that passes for entertainment continues to disturb us, Even the three-minute trailer was too vile to watch, with multiple uses...

When I published the upcoming new series' trailer, about a week ago, I did say that it would very likely ruffle a few feathers. And so, to absolutely no one's surprise (certainly not mine), it has. Check out the press release I received from the American Family Association (1 of the largest "pro-family" organizations in the country with over a million supporters, operating close to 200 radio stations across the country under the American Family Radio banner). After you read it, watch a second trailer which includes all-new footage: Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim Planning New Blasphemous Show Called ‘Black Jesus’ American Family Association and One Million Moms Says...

Exclusive: Adult Swim has picked up a second season of its live-action series Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell. Matt Servitto (Banshee, The Sopranos), Henry Zebrowski (The Wolf Of Wall Street) and Craig Rowin (Night Of Too Many Stars, @Midnight) star in the workplace comedy that follows Gary (Zebrowski), an associate demon, as he attempts to capture souls on Earth in order to climb the corporate ladder of the underworld. Gary is too stupid, lazy, and kind-hearted to do his job well and is frequently stabbed in the back by his devious co-worker, Claude (Rowin). Plus, his boss Satan (Servitto) is immortal, which means that management positions are unlikely to become available soon. In Season 2, Gary learns how to appear on people’s shoulders to tempt them, we meet our first angel, and we find the answer to the question if there are women in hell. (Answer: yes.) In its first season,...

Adult Swim just announced that it's given the greenlight to a new scripted, half-hour live-action comedy to arrive later this year. Not to be confused with "Black Nativity," "Black Jesus" is about exactly what the title suggests -- Jesus, played by Gerald "Slink" Johnson, is out to spread love and kindness in present-day Compton, CA, supported by a small band of loyal locals. Aaron McGruder ("The Boondocks," "Red Tails") created the series and will serve as executive producer alongside director Mike Clattenburg ("Trailer Park Boys"). The series also stars Charlie Murphy ("Are We There Yet"), Corey Holcomb ("The Cleveland Show") and John Witherspoon ("The Boondocks"). Adult Swim specializes in animated and live-action series for young adults. Production has already begun on the series in Los Angeles. "The Boondocks," the animated series based on McGruder's comic strip of the same name, will return for a fourth season on Adult Swim on...

Adult Swim has green-lighted a half-hour live-action series called Black Jesus, created by The Boondocks' Aaron McGruder, the network announced. Gerald "Slink" Johnson (Lamar in Grand Theft Auto V) will star as Jesus Christ, a present-day Compton resident spreading messages of love and kindness with the help of his apostles. Fans of the Boondocks TV show might feel like this new series has actually been gestating for a long time: One of the very first lines on the pilot back in 2005 was Huey announcing "Jesus was black, Ronald Reagan was the devil, and the government is lying about 9/11." McGruder will serve as executive producer, and the show should premiere later this year.

The Boondocks creator Aaron McGruder is delivering a new series to Adult Swim, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Black Jesus follows a modern-day Jesus living in Compton and trying to “spread love and kindness” in the neighborhood.
I know some of you were disappointed that Mason Dye wouldn’t be sticking around for the Flowers in the Attic sequel, but E! has some news that should make up for that. Dye has joined the cast of Teen Wolf. Even better, he’ll be playing a new, gay member of the lacrosse team. Dye isn’t the only new cast member who will play a part of the lacrosse team, Khylin Rhambo and Dylan Sprayberry are also joining the supernatural drama.
Does this mean we’ll finally get to see more of Danny?
Gabourey Sidibe will have a recurring role on Empire, the hip-hop drama from Precious director Lee Daniels and Danny Strong.

Adult Swim is looking to stir a debate with a series order to Black Jesus, a half-hour live-action scripted comedy from The Boondocks creator Aaron McGruder. The show stars newcomer Gerald “Slink” Johnson (Grand Theft Auto V) as Jesus living in present-day Compton, CA on a daily mission to spread love and kindness throughout the neighborhood with the help of his small but loyal group of downtrodden followers. The series pickup for Black Jesus comes on the heels of the Jesus race controversy triggered by Fox News star Megyn Kelley’s recent “Jesus is white” comments. Black Jesus co-stars Charlie Murphy (Are We There Yet), Corey Holcomb (The Cleveland Show), and John Witherspoon (The Boondocks). Production on the new series has begun in Los Angeles for a premiere later this year. Possibly because of its subject matter, the network had kept the project pretty quiet. Its May 2013 upfront slate included...

The black pulchritude on display in Baggage Claim is staggering. Whether it's men, women, or both who float your boat, and whether you are Team Light Skin or Team Dark Skin—or hopefully evolved beyond that nonsense—there is some heavenly body onscreen for everyone to drool over. Sadly, that's the film's only strength, as its retrograde gender politics, its hard sell of 1 percenter lifestyle porn, its irony-free lionization of all-purpose sass (sassy gay friend; sassy sex-starved best female friend; sassy black mama), and its leaps (and dismissals) of logic in story, plot, and character are enough to make Black Jesus weep in despair at the failure of filmmaking fundamentals. The story: When almost-30-year-old single lady Montana (Paula Patton, as the slightly more mel...

Smith, whose ass just lost a $48,000 lawsuit involving a diamond necklace that features an Afro-American rendition of the Messiah.A jewelry company called Lemmerman's sued Smith, claiming he ordered a bunch of bling back in 2010 -- including a diamond chain, two Black Jesus pendants and some earrings -- totaling $25,500 ... but never paid. We're told one Jesus pendant and chain cost roughly $15,000 alone.

Valerio Zurlini, writer-director, is someone I find a little hard to pin down: a career which contains both Girl with a Suitcase (1961), in which prostitute/aspiring actress Claudia Cardinale becomes houseguest of a teenage boy (but it's Not like Risky Business) and Desert of the Tartars (1976), an existential historical epic based on a novel which David Lean had planned to film at one point. What initially seems to unite the work is a rare seriousness: Zurlini is earnest, almost humorless, and at times despairing.
The strikingly titled Black Jesus (1968 - the Italian title translates, more subtly, as Sitting on His Right) is a good example of Zurlini's willingness to follow a story into the darkest places. It's based blatantly on the true story of Patrice Lumumba, the first legally elected Congolese leader, who was deposed, tortured and assassinated under the watchful eye of the Un, and with the probable connivance of the Us and Belgium.

Below is a trailer for a graphic novel called Black Jesus – not, not the 1968 Woody Strode-starrer, but a new comic book written by Jimmy Blondell and David Krintzman, and drawn by Nicholas Da Silva. Its somewhat cryptic synopsis reads: “What happens when someone is born different? Are they accepted? And if they are accepted, what are they accepted as? Chris is born with special gifts and every individual has their own beliefs. Is Chris a Mutant or Messiah?”
Hence, Black Jesus, I guess.
The main reason I mention this comic book is because, I just learned (via the Black Superhero blog) that a movie based on it is going to be made. I don’t think I need to once again lament the near-absence of comic book/graphic novel adaptations that feature black characters, so I won’t.
I did a little digging to find that the Black Jesus...
