Blue Road: The Edna O’Brien Story is an interesting documentary about one of Ireland’s most controversial and important writers. The film, which Sinéad O’Shea directed, gives a personal look at Edna O’Brien and shows how she went from growing up in a traditional Irish town to becoming a famous author whose brave writing challenged social norms.
The documentary reveals much about O’Brien’s life through old footage, interviews with people who knew him, and powerful voiceovers by actress Jessie Buckley, who brings O’Brien’s journals and diaries to life. At its heart, the movie is a deep look at a woman who bucked the suffocating expectations of Ireland in the 1950s and 1960s, making history as a female writer and speaking out against the strong Catholic conservatism of her time.
O’Shea’s method goes beyond a simple biographical sketch. She details O’Brien’s personal struggles, her troubled marriage to Ernest Gébler,...

Gene Roddenberry is the man behind Star Trek. Without him, none of us would be here today. He created the foundation of what the franchise would be and helped everyone see the potential that his little science-fiction show had. Now, decades later, so many voices have contributed to his original idea. So many that fans have taken issue with some of the uniqueness these new voices bring to the table.
The usual retort to something fans don't like is "Gene wouldn't like that". And he may not. Yet, it's important to note that Gene hated most of Star Trek. He disliked The Wrath of Khan, he hated Patrick Stewart and the idea of Deep Space Nine was one that may have been a hard sell to him. After all, he believed Star Trek should adhere to strict rules.
Now, not all of his rules are bad. For instance, highlighting a...

Greek officials sought to reassure local and foreign producers this week at the Thessaloniki Film Festival that the country’s 40% cash rebate is still on track, after the announcement last month that the Mediterranean nation was delaying plans to reopen its popular incentive scheme.
That decision came after Greece pressed pause on its cash-back program in May to clear more than €100 million ($107 million) in outstanding debts. Greek officials now insist the program is set to resume in January, with Leonidas Christopoulos, CEO of state audiovisual body Creative Greece, insisting the further delay was necessary for the government to square its accounts.
“You cannot be credible — especially abroad — if you have a huge backlog and reopen the platform,” Christopoulos told Variety. “It wouldn’t be credible.”

This week marks 35 years since Monty Python’s Life of Brian hit theaters in the U.K., several months after its U.S. release enraged American evangelicals. Of course, the backlash was very much a thing in England as well.
The most famous artifact of this controversy is the the heated debate, on the show Friday Night, Saturday Morning, that found John Cleese and Michael Palin taking on Bishop of Southwark, Mervyn Stockwood and Christian journalist Malcolm Muggeridge, who, incidentally, was later outed as a “serial groper” of women.

Frequent Monty Python collaborator Julian Doyle, who edited Life of Brian, has a new book out about the film. But The After-Life of Brian isn’t about the film’s production, it’s seemingly more about the film’s representation of the historical time period compared to The Bible. According to Doyle, the movie is by far the more trustworthy source.

This article contains massive spoilers for "Heretic."
Do you believe in something because you fundamentally believe it to be true with every fiber of your being, or do you believe something because it's all you've ever known? This is the philosophical question posed by Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant) in the heart of "Heretic," the critical horror hit from "65" directing duo Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. After two unsuspecting Mormon missionaries named Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) and Sister Paxton (Chloe East) arrive at Mr. Reed's door to spend a minute talking about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints he used a charming sweater vest and the promise of blueberry pie to lure them into the house. There, they are thrust into a fight for their lives that will force them to question their faith in religion, their fellow man, and their own understanding of reality.

“It would be good for you to socialize with someone. Even the pedophiles!”
Such is the timeless maternal advice that Ethel (Eliza Roberts) offers her stunted adolescent son, known only as Hippo (Kimball Farley), with the hopes of getting him out of the house for a few hours. The unremarkable young man is typically laser-focused on playing Nintendo 64, masturbating against his own stuffed hippopotamus, and drinking milk that he despises because he values bone density above all else. It’s the kind of reclusive existence that causes even his legal guardian to wonder if being molested would be that much of a social downgrade.
But protecting her kids from pedophiles has never been Ethel’s strong suit. The time that she devotes to discussing hypothetical pedophiles at the local pool would be far better spent looking into the very real pedophile that her stepdaughter has invited into their home. The...

It’s hard to imagine many characters this year having a better introduction than Chevy Chase in Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night.” In the film about the first-ever “Saturday Night Live” episode on October 11, 1975, Chase all but flies onto the screen. He stumbles over a garbage can and falls flat on his face, a move that recalls one of Chase’s signature pratfalls. “Sorry, I tripped over my penis,” Chase says after getting up – a perfect button to the scene, a punchline that underscores his confidence and attitude in those early days of his career.
“I was doing pratfalls around the apartment all the time. So I felt really prepared when I went to the audition,” Chase actor Cory Michael Smith tells Gold Derby. “One of the first things I did in the room was trip over a chair for Jason, which he was very concerned about, but it worked.

Gavin Newsom wants the newly reelected Donald Trump to know California has a line, and the former president better think twice about crossing it when he returns to the White House next year.
Waiting until Vice President Kamala Harris delivered her concession speech this afternoon in Washington DC, the Governor praised his longtime political ally and, at the same time, gave the newly minted president-elect a warning.
“Vice President Kamala Harris set out to fight to defend our fundamental freedoms and build a country that works for everyone,” Newsom said Wednesday of Harris and her short lived campaign for the White House. “She stood up for working families, decency, and opportunity. Though this is not the outcome we wanted, our fight for freedom and opportunity endures.”

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever looks like one of those corny Christian comedies about how God provides the answer to all things and how all families should embrace Christianity. Its silly trailer didn’t inspire much confidence, but after watching this in a theater, I gotta admit, I’m feeling that Christmas spirit. I’ve only ever seen one or two Christmas pageants in my short life, but this film certainly lives up to the title as the best one I’ve witnessed. Led by a never-better Judy Greer and a terrific young performance from Beatrice Schneider, this is an uncommonly terrific family comedy.
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever Review

Tom Cruise and Risky Business—the iconic pairing that put him on the map. But behind those scenes (and that unforgettable underwear dance) lies a sizzling chapter Cruise would rather it stay in the past. Turns out, the actor’s chemistry with Rebecca De Mornay wasn’t just for the cameras; their on-screen spark fired up a real-life romance—and let’s just say, it was way more intense than anyone could’ve guessed.

With Cruise’s rise to fame and a secret romance that burned through the Risky Business set, this off-camera fling was just as daring as the movie itself. Sure, Cruise may want fans to forget, but hey, the allure of 80s Hollywood drama’s impossible to resist—even for the most die-hard Cruise fans.

If there’s one thing the world needs, it’s yet another Christmas movie. That probably sounds sarcastic, but I mean it. The endless deluge of Christmas films, year after year, has watered the holiday down into a genial but middling medley of cozy trappings and tropes. The Hallmark Channel bears a lot of the blame for this, pumping out hundreds of blandly reassuring holiday films in rapid succession, all with the same four or five plots and (slightly) different casting.
Ironically, this overwhelming wave of (hopefully) well-intentioned Christmas movies has led to a situation not unlike the one found in “A Charlie Brown Christmas Special.” This holiday has been overly commercialized for so long now that it’s hard to remember it any other way, and the actual message of the season has been lost in the flood of corporate cash-ins.

The comedy of Jimmy Kimmel Live! isn't for everyone. That's probably especially true for Republicans, who have been a recurring punchline for host Jimmy Kimmel as he's ramped up his political commentary in the Trump era. But Kimmel tried to bridge that gap on Tuesday night with a special monologue just for conservatives.
Kimmel's special monologue comes just a week out from the 2024 presidential election. Both candidates have made their closing arguments, offering very different views of the country and its future. Kimmel hasn't been shy about his support for Democrat Kamala Harris. Tuesday night's monologue gave the comedian a chance to pitch Republican voters on his perspective.
Right off the bat, Kimmel clarified that his monologue wasn't meant to insult or alienate conservatives. It wasn't a roast of Donald Trump or his allies; Kimmel did plenty of that the night before.

Ahead of the show, the host posted on social media, asking for people to “ask a Republican you love” to watch Wednesday night, as he has a “special monologue” for them.
“I assume you’re watching this because you care about the person who asked you to watch it, or maybe you’re just open-minded and not afraid to hear somebody who might not agree with you speak,” Kimmel said to kick off the show. “Either way, thank you for giving me 15 minutes of your life to talk about Donald Trump. Netflix’s first season of “Hellbound” debuted three years ago and spilled a nightmare world onto screens from its very first scene. The dark supernatural K-Drama excavated faith, organized religion and the instant evaporation of societal niceties when our fundamental, existential beliefs are called into question.
“Hellbound” Season 1 saw the world turned upside down when unearthly beings start condemning people to hell, allowing new fanatics and schemers to rise to power under the guise of spiritual purity.
It’s been a long time since Season 1, and it was a dense six episodes, so if you need a refresher, here’s the “Hellbound” Season 1 recap you need to get prepped for Season 2.
“Hellbound” (Netflix) Angels, Demons, Decrees and Demonstrations
The central premise of “Hellbound” is that the world is turned upside down when inexplicable, brutally violent and seemingly divine deaths emerge in the public eye and the social contract dissolves as cults and new faiths rise.

On a recent Sunday in Canton, Georgia, a group of American Christians found themselves on a mission. It was a very specific mission, though like many missions these days, it had merch. It had live music. It had signage spread out across the front yard of a former one-room schoolhouse such that when cars meandered down the two-lane street passing through this quiet patch of Cherokee County, drivers might take notice and — should the spirit strike — feel themselves moved to pull over and hearken to see what in the heck was going on.

“I get this ache… And I, I thought it was for sex, but it’s to tear everything to fucking pieces.”
We blame the curse of womanhood on Eve. The Bible tells us the first woman was tempted by a serpent to eat fruit from the tree of knowledge, thus dooming all of womankind with the pain of menstruation. And it often does feel like cruel and unusual punishment. Those who menstruate spend roughly one week per month doubled over in pain as ferocious cramps rip through our abdomens, followed by several days of uncontrollable bleeding and skyrocketing hormones. Although periods vary wildly from person to person and evolve over the course of a lifetime, there’s little most of us wouldn’t do to avoid the phenomenon entirely. Many horror creators have tackled menstruation, but few as effectively as John Fawcett . His 2000 film Ginger Snaps explores the power and...

When one thinks of Tim Allen (if one thinks of Tim Allen at all these days), it’s probably in the context of his various sitcoms, Buzz Lightyear or the Christmasy fever dream that is the Santa Clause franchise. But in addition to all of that, the author of Don’t Stand Too Close to a Naked Man is now publicly sharing his theological takes on social media.
Over on X/Twitter, Allen has been posting about the book he’s currently reading, which just so happens to be The Bible. Back in August, Allen posted that, although he had never “really read the Bible” he was nearly finished plowing through the Old Testament, and hyped for the sequel (aka the New Testament). He also noted that the Good Book was “so far amazing and not at all what I was expecting.”

Fifteen months ago, during a recap episode of the “Drama Queens” podcast, guest Michaela McManus asked co-hosts Bethany Joy Lenz and Sophia Bush whether they’d ever write a book. Lenz responded that she often writes, and that she would love to tell her story. And then she revealed to listeners something shocking about herself. “I was in a cult for 10 years,” she said. “That would be a really valuable experience to write about — and the 10 years of recovery after that. There’s there’s a lot to tell.”
Four weeks later, she talked about the experience at length for the first time, speaking with Variety over Zoom. As she sat outside her Nashville home, we spoke for 45 minutes about the shame she felt, how her “One Tree Hill” cast tried to help and how she ultimately overcame the fear she had about leaving the group.

More than 21 years ago, Bethany Joy Lenz was embarking on a new chapter of her life that would change everything.
In 2003, Lenz was starring on soon-to-be-hit television series One Tree Hill as Haley James Scott. A golden student, Haley was the best friend of Chad Michael Murray’s Lucas Scott and the other half to James Lafferty’s Nathan, the two becoming a memorable TV couple. Starring on a popular teen show was life-changing, but Lenz’s experience was also affected by the fact that she was simultaneously in a cult.
Throughout the show’s tenure, Lenz seemingly lived a double life. The actress would spend days on set in North Carolina alongside Murray, Lafferty, Sophia Bush and Hilarie Burton Morgan. But when not working, she devoted herself to a small Christian group, eventually known as the Big House Family, led by a shady pastor in Idaho. What began as...

In Cannes to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the “SpongeBob SquarePants” franchise at Mipcom, SpongeBob and Patrick voice actors Tom Kenny and Bill Fagerbakke joined Variety for a discussion about representing their show abroad, all the new ways their characters are being brought to screens and why they’re both “just as giddy about this job as we were 25 years ago.”
Variety: You guys were just at New York Comic Con and have done a lot of traveling with this show over the years, but is it still special when you get to go abroad and see “SpongeBob” get attention at events like Mipcom?
Fagerbakke: We were on the show for probably 15 years or more before we started to go abroad to somewhere really cool and have some fun.

Yesterday, King Charles and Camilla arrived in Australia for His Majesty’s first visit to the country since taking the throne.
King Charles And Queen Camilla Were Met With Opposition
Crowds in the street warmly welcomed them. The King and Queen were presented with flowers, adorable stuffed koalas, and other goodies.
It was appreciated that the King took the time to travel to the “land down under”, halting his ongoing cancer treatment to do so.
The well-wishers’ loud cheers were impressive. Unfortunately, some people weren’t so hospitable. Some locals chanted, “Get lost” and “Get a life.” They arrived at St. Thomas’s Anglican Church in North Sydney.
Whenever royal family members visited the church, they signed the Bible that belonged to Rev Richard Johnson, the first Christian minister in Australia. The late Queen Elizabeth signed it in 1954. She was the first monarch from Britain to put her John Hancock on it.

After a mix of successes and setbacks, Max’s Lanterns series is starting to take shape as a promising show that fans could genuinely enjoy. Although it’s set on Earth rather than in space—much to the disappointment of some fans—we’ve been promised a True Detective-style murder mystery, which sounds intriguing.
Hal Jordan and John Stewart will be the main characters, portrayed by Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, respectively. The series is expected to help integrate the Green Lanterns into the broader Dcu lore in the future, with Guy Gardner also confirmed to be part of the Dcu.
What about other characters from the lore? We’ve reported on some Earth-based characters, including love interests for both Jordan and Stewart, but what about iconic figures like Parallax? Writer Tom King attended New York Comic-Con recently, and if you’re curious about his comments on Parallax, keep reading!

Classic rock was sometimes seen as the devil’s music but it knew how to get biblical. For example, Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” resembles a famous Bible story. Interestingly, “Stairway to Heaven” first became a hit decades after its release.
Before Led Zeppelin, the Bible had a stairway to heaven
According to Genesis 11, humanity once spoke one language but ruined its unity. “They said ‘Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth,'” the passage says. “And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men built. Deep in the Brazilian rainforest, a musical adaptation of a very old story was brought to life. Animators transformed Noah, his family, and a boatload of animals into a menagerie of singing singers. At its heart was a pair of mouse musicians determined to make their talents float.
Viewers familiar with the Bible may recall the tale of Noah, who long ago was tasked by God with preserving all life amidst a worldwide flood. Only Noah, his family, and two of every kind of animal would fit on a massive ark to survive the deluge. It’s a foundational part of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, showing humanity’s first fresh start after sin destroyed the world.
This animated film adapts the biblical account into a colorful musical. Directed by Sérgio Machado and Alois Di Leo, it refocuses the story around two mice in 1920s Rio de Janeiro: musician duo Tito and Vini.

To quote star Yvonne Strahovski, the effects on new Peacock horror series “Teacup” are “so gross and amazing.” As viewers of the first two episodes discovered (along with the three families trapped together in the show), crossing a seemingly arbitrary line has serious consequences. As in, your body rips itself open.
“You basically turn inside out; your bones are pulled and reconstituted, being pulled towards the line,” Knb Efx makeup supervisor Carey Jones told IndieWire. “[Creator Ian McCulloch] sent me a bible in terms of the general feel of things, what things should look like, should feel like, and the texture and the flavor of it. Once I read that, I was drawn in, because it was something that I haven’t done before. I’m very much a nerd of old-school moviemaking and things like that, and this had that feel to it.”
Viewers got to see that for themselves...

Bethany Joy Lenz has not forgotten the cult that lured her in and changed her life. Now, she’s sharing the details.
Though it’s been many years since the cast of One Tree Hill went their separate ways, that time remains indelible.
In part because they were The CW stars during that now fallen network’s prime. But, for Bethany Joy Lenz, there is another reason.
She spent a decade of her life in a cult. That grim stretch of her life coincided with One Tree Hill. One of the cast even tried to help her see things for how they were to save her.
Now, she’s coming clean about the whole experience.

Bethany Joy Lenz is best known for her roles on iconic shows such as Guiding Light and One Tree Hill. Now, the actress is sharing another side of herself. She’s opening up about the time she got sucked into a cult.
Living a Lie
Lenz spoke candidly to People Magazine about her past. She fell into the cult when she filmed One Tree Hill, a hit teen drama on The WB (then the CW) starring Chad Michael Murray, Hilarie Burton, and Sophia Bush. Lenz kept this big secret from her co-stars at the time.
She joined a Christian cult led by an Idaho pastor. The negative outcomes affected her personal life, career, and income. Her pastor had the final say on her choices. Happy 30th to Pulp Fiction. Quentin Tarantino made a grand entrance with Reservoir Dogs, but it was 1994’s Pulp Fiction that solidified him as the director to watch with his unique brand of intermingling stories and 70s-inspired aesthetics. For the 30th anniversary, Pulp Fiction is returning to the silver screen in October for special presentations featuring pristine new 35mm prints in select theatres across the U.S. In addition, the film will be released on 4K Ultra HD in a 30th Anniversary Collector’s Edition on December 3, 2024, from Paramount Home Entertainment.
Pulp Fiction was such a milestone that not only did it catapult Tarantino’s career immensely, but the film would also become the comeback for John Travolta and it would be the breakout for Samuel L. Jackson. He would be a standout early on in the film with a Bible verse monologue right before executing an unlucky individual. Jackson...

Samuel L. Jackson recently remembered and recited a memorable monologue from the 1994 cult classic film “Pulp Fiction.” In a video posted to social media, Jackson casually sits on a couch and flawlessly delivers Jules Winnfield’s chilling speech from the Bible passage Ezekiel 25:17.
Released 30 years ago, “Pulp Fiction” tells intertwining crime stories set in Los Angeles. Quentin Tarantino’s directing earned widespread acclaim and seven Academy Award nominations. Jackson played Jules, a philosophical hitman, in an unforgettable performance. In a pivotal scene, Jules uses the biblical verse as a pre-execution ritual.
Jackson’s video commemorates the film’s 30th anniversary this year. Without pausing, he precisely speaks the entire monologue with the same intensity and dramatic flair seen in 1994. Fans were amazed that Jackson, at age 73, could still remember and deliver such a long speech from memory. His performance underscores how deeply the character and scene affected both viewers and his own career.
