He currently live in Dallas, Texas with his wife, Kim, and their two daughters, Malena and Dorianna, and son, Tre. Gary began his long football career at the collegiate level where he enjoyed a strong four year career at Penn State playing in the running back position. Post-graduation, Brown was selected in the eighth round of the 1991 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers. He stayed with the Oilers until 1995 where he then played with the San Diego Chargers in 1997 and then the New York Giants from 1998-99. During his playing career in the NFL he ran for 4,300 yards and 21 touchdowns on 1,023 carries and caught 84 passes for 631 yards and three scores in 99 games.
Brown made his move to coaching football after his eight season run as a player in the NFL. He made his coaching debut with the as the offensive coordinator for the Williamsport Are High School team and then spent six years coaching at the collegiate level for Lycoming College, Susquehanna University, and Rutgers University. In 2009 Gary joined the Cleveland Browns as the running backs coach, where he guided record setting backfield units. In his first season in Cleveland, Brown coached leading rusher Jerome Harris he led the club with 862 rushing yards, more than double what he had amassed in his prior three seasons combined. During Brown's 2010 season in Cleveland he oversaw the backfield led by Peyton Hillis who joined the Browns Hall of Fame as one of the only Cleveland players to record 11 or more rushing touchdowns in a single season. Gary Brown's success in Cleveland caught the eye of the Dallas Cowboys who brought him into the organization in 2013. Since arriving in Dallas, Brown has led the Cowboys to finish in the top 10 in rushing yards while also averaging at least 4.5 yards per carry each season. Brown has coached skilled running backs with the Cowboys such as DeMarco Murray, Darren McFadden, and Ezekiel Elliot, all of whom have topped 1,000 rushing yards during a season.
